Art Apprec iation for Kids
by Jean Scholefield,
Appearing in Sept. 98 Needle Arts Magazine. Each Chapter should now have in its library a copy of the booklet, " The Art of Teaching Stitchery to Children." This booklet contains objectives and program goals, teaching opportunities, teaching locations, classroom techniques and management, sources for teaching children, and a current bibliography of Needle Arts articles. It also presents several projects to be used in your chapter. The projects and information in this booklet may be copied by EGA members to be used in their teaching programs. One copy of this booklet was provided for each EGA chapter (mailed to the Education Chairman) in December 1997. If additional copies are needed, they may be purchased from EGA Headquarters, 335 West Broadway, Suite 100, Louisville, KY 40202-4122, for $4.50 plus $1.00 s/h. This booklet will be helpful in assisting chapters as teaching projects are prepared. Addressed in this booklet are the issues of whom to teach and where to do it. Consider teaching in the classroom, where needle arts instructions can blend with art history or appreciation. Author, designer, and teacher Barbara Herring feels that one method for teaching beginning stitchery is to allow children the freedom to experiment with needle and threads through their own individual creative design. The following lesson, adaptable for grades K-12, is based on the formula for a creative approach to teaching that is set forth in Barbara's book.

    Looking At Pictures
From: Stacey L If you're looking for a great one-volume introduction to art appreciation for young children, you should be Looking At Pictures (LAP) by Joy Richardson. This is a book full of reproductions of paintings in the National Gallery of Art, London. It covers art from the 13th to the 20th centuries, and from all over Europe. A list of the chapter headings will give you an idea of what LAP covers: Introducing paintings; Behind the scenes in a gallery; Why paintings were made; Stories in pictures; Clues and symbols; How paintings were made; Focus on color; Tricking the eye; Everyday life and special events; The power of light; Painting people; Painting objects; Magic landscapes; Organizing the picture. Each chapter uses several paintings to explore a given topic and is written in easily accessible, conversational style appropriate for reading aloud to children about age 6+. LAP offers a good mix of both the mechanics of painting and appreciation / interpretation. Once children grasp some of the reasons why paintings were made, for example, they can then more readily assess a given painting as one meant for home adornment or public display, etc. Large, often full-page reproductions are frequently accompanied by enlarged details for closer examination. Occasionally, details from paintings from earlier chapters reappear for the reader to reconsider in light of a new topic. The book ends with a list of the artists and their works. Although a fairly short book, there's lots packed into its 80 pages!

If you're like me, the sea of choices for art instruction is overwhelming.  I feel like I don't even know what they need to learn, much less when, how, or what to use.  We all owe a lot to Devin, Stacey, KC, and a few others on the Sonlight Extracurricular Forum, for all their patient advice, often to the same questions over and over.  At least now I feel I have some direction to start from.  There seemed to be a need to put much of that good advice in one place, and save our experts a little work. I want to especially thank Devin for helping get this collection "ready to meet the world."  For trying to save her some work, I sure made her do a lot of work!  Thank you Stacey, too, for your input and reviews.

Dance also can teach students self-confidence, Wynn Seale instructor says
    By HEATHER HOWARD
    Staff Writer
It's morning on the Friday before spring break, and some of Patricia Hornbeck's ballet students are having a hard time with the concept of "sassy."
"What is that show you all like - `Dawson's Creek'?" she asks, imploring two middle school girls to dance their parts as Russian peasant girls as they would if their favorite teen heartthrob were watching.
"Picture Dawson in the front row," she tells the dancers. "You're village girls. They didn't have TV or Nintendo. They didn't put Tupac on the stereo and invite their friends over. They danced."
Grinning, the girls shuffle back to their places to wait for the music to start.
It's a scene Hornbeck will repeat over and over during the day - getting her 80 students to appreciate Tchaikovsky or Stravinsky by throwing in references to teen TV idols or rapper Tupac Shakur.
"If I can teach them to appreciate any kind of art form, I've done my job," she said.

The following National Visual Art Standards can be applied to this lesson: Fifth-Eighth Grade GRADES 5-8 CONTENT AND ACHIEVEMENT STANDARDS Except as noted, the standards in this section describe the cumulative skills and knowledge expected of all students upon exiting grade 8. Students in grades 5-7 should engage in developmentally appropriate learning experiences to prepare them to achieve these standards at grade 8. These standards presume that the students have achieved the standards specified for grades K-4; they assume that the students will demonstrate higher levels of the expected skills and knowledge, will deal with increasingly complex art works, and will provide more sophisticated responses to works of art. Determining the curriculum and the specific instructional activities necessary to achieve the standards is the responsibility of states, local school districts, and individual teachers. VISUAL ARTS (5-8) Students in grades 5-8 continue to need a framework that aids them in learning the characteristics of the visual arts by using a wide range of subject matter, symbols, meaningful images, and visual expressions. They grow ever more sophisticated in their need to use the visual arts to reflect their feelings and emotions and in their abilities to evaluate the merits of their efforts. These standards provide that framework in a way that promotes the students' thinking, working, communicating, reasoning, and investigating skills and provides for their growing familiarity with the ideas, concepts, issues, dilemmas, and knowledge important in the visual arts. As students gain this knowledge and these skills, they gain in their ability to apply the knowledge and skills in the visual arts to their widening personal worlds.

Most of my students had never visited an art museum or a technology museum. As a motivating factor, I told my students that I would work hard to secure a grant to take them to a major art museum and technology museum in San Francisco. The grant, which covered transportation and admission fees, was made available primarily because of the linking of science and art.
