More Information V Arts and Letters Print Preview of Section The arts, more than other features of culture, provide avenues for the expression of imagination and personal vision. They offer a range of emotional and intellectual pleasures to consumers of art and are an important way in which a culture represents itself. There has long been a Western tradition distinguishing those arts that appeal to the multitude, such as popular music, from those—such as classical orchestral music—normally available to the elite of learning and taste. Popular art forms are usually seen as more representative American products. In the United States in the recent past, there has been a blending of popular and elite art forms, as all the arts experienced a period of remarkable cross-fertilization. Because popular art forms are so widely distributed, arts of all kinds have prospered.

Whether due to trust in divine providence or, more likely, a Panglossian naiveté, my biggest worry is simply that I'll be incessantly bored. That may change, of course, when my newbie enthusiasm is doused by the cold waters of experience. Whatever the circumstances, boredom will no doubt be a problem, so I plan to prepare the best I can. Famous librarians and famous people associated with libraries.

Literature, libertines and Lenin's wife: famous people and libraries
Looking at famous people as librarians
Stephen Parnell Associate Librarian: Client Services
University of South Australia Library What do the following famous people have in common: Casanova, J.Edgar Hoover and Mao Tse-Tung If you said that they all worked undercover at some stage of their career you are only partially correct. The background they share is that each at some time of their life worked in libraries. They are famous librarians - although not necessarily famous as librarians. Casanova served as librarian for 13 years at the Castle of Count Waldstein of Bohemia, presumably coining the slogan that, "Librarians are novel lovers" along the way. Hoover worked as a cataloguer at the Library of Congress for five years before moving on to his better known job as Director of the FBI. Mao spent some time in the journals section of the Beijing University Library before going on to become Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party.

Librariana aims to be a collection of references to libraries and librarians in the world of fiction and in the arts. Archives and documentation centres have also been included if particularly significant or when confused, as often happens, with libraries. The section is divided into several branches, each of them presenting links to similar sites and to the pages created by the editorial team on various topics. In order to compile these pages the available bibliography has been used, as well as information collected among members of the editorial team and colleagues.
    aw-clm@aib.it

Librariana will also receive essays written by colleagues on the topics dealt with in a future section. These contributions that will be examined and adapted if necessary, can be sent by e-mail to the editorial team at the above-mentioned address, after agreeing on file format.
A presentation of this site in Italian is available.

Foundations of Library and Information Science (21:101)
December 1, 2000 Much of the problem of the "librarian stereotype" and the dissatisfaction with interactions with librarians may stem from images of the librarian as authoritarian and not authoritative . It is central to the argument being posited here, that mixed into this discourse is the perception that librarians are cut-off from their respective communities. It is this perception of aloofness that turns their voices from authoritative ones to authoritarian ones in the ears of their communities. How do librarians interact with their communities? How do they define who is and who is not included in their community? Do they act as facilitators or hindrances to those searching for information in the library? Do they respond in friendly or fearsome ways? Or, more importantly, are they perceived to be reacting in friendly or fearsome ways?
