April - June 2001
Main Exhibit Area Great upheavals took place recently in Armenia even before the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The rise of the Karabagh movement in late 1987 was followed by a war to protect Nagorno Karabagh's independence during 1992-94. A massive earthquake in December 1988 in northern Armenia took the lives of 30,000 people and orphaned thousands of children. Following the breakup of the Soviet Union, Armenia established itself as a republic in May 1991, and its leaders, who had little political and diplomatic experience, faced the challenges of building a market economy and finding solutions to the Azerbaijani and Turkish blockades. Among the new republic's leaders were many writers and intellectuals who had been at the forefront of the struggle for freedom; one of them, Levon Ter Petrossian, became the republic's first president in October 1991. With Soviet censorship removed, writers and artists produced works that reflected a range of reactions, including pain, despair, hopelessness, the struggle to survive, and other social and psychological crises. New periodicals and newspapers featured work by new artists, and journals also devoted extensive amounts of space to the work of foreign artists. Much classical and contemporary foreign literature was translated into Armenian. And filmmakers with financial support from abroad produced films, such as Vigen Chaldranian's feature film "Kyrie Eleison." The World Conference in Contemporary Armenian Literature, organized by the UCLA Narekatsi Chair for Armenian Studies, took place on April 7-8 in UCLA's Rolfe Auditorium. This two-day conference brought more than 30 poets, writers, and critics from various countries, including 15 from Armenia. Among the questions discussed were: What were the causes of the recent explosion of Armenian art and literature? What are the themes of the literature? What is happening to the language? What is the quality of the work? What is the current state of poetry, prose, and drama? And what is the nature of Armenian diaspora literature? In the course of history, Armenia went through long periods of political powerlessness during which culture played the crucial role in maintaining the continuity of ethnic tradition; has this been true in the last decade of the twentieth century? What is the role of the writer/artist today in Armenia and the diaspora?

COLUMBIA, S.C.
At first glance, it seems like a modest stab at a Christmas exhibit - a few old books and pamphlets with a holiday theme. But few public buildings sport such pricey Yuletide decor. For the past month, the glass cases in the lobby of USC's Thomas Cooper Library have displayed rare printings of the Christmas writings of Charles Dickens - the man who literally invented the genre - including two first editions of the classic "A Christmas Carol." The books are valued at nearly $30,000 each.

Conference to celebrate Jewish art and literature
Weekend program and new Firestone collection recognize Jewish-American artists
Andrew Bosse
Princetonian Contributor
Leonard Milberg '53 hunted in archives, collections and college libraries for unpublished works of some of the greatest writers in Jewish-American history. At the University of Texas, the passionate book collector found two stories by the literary giant Isaac Beshevis Singer in its original Yiddish. Newly translated, the stories are just one exciting aspect of a collection featuring over 130 authors, poets and playwrights.
The Leonard L. Milberg '53 Collection of Jewish-American Writers goes on display Sunday at Firestone Library's exhibition gallery.
A conference dedicated to former University President Harold Shapiro will begin the same day Milberg's collection is unveiled. Thirteen artists featured in the collection will read selections from their work this weekend. At a luncheon to publicize the weekend's events, English professor Esther Schor expressed her enthusiasm for the long-awaited event. "[I've been] looking forward to this week for two years," she said.

Baudelaire, Charles. "The Painter of Modern Life" and Other Essays. Edited and translated by Jonathan Mayne. London: Phaidon Press, 1964. This collection brings together Baudelaire’s art criticism, which includes extensive commentary on Daumier and his work Benjamin, Walter. Charles Baudelaire: A Lyric Poet in the Era of High Capitalism. Trans., Harry Zohn. London: NLB, 1973. This book collects together Benjamin’s writings on Baudelaire and provides insight on the relationship between culture and society in mid-nineteenth-century France. Byerly, Alison. "Effortless Art: The Sketch in Nineteenth-Century Painting and Literature." Criticism: A Quarterly for Literature and the Arts 41, no. 3 (Summer 1999): 349-364. Byerly explores the relationship between visual sketches and the literary sketches of Charles Dickens and William Makepeace Thackeray. She finds that the two authors appropriated the critical attitude of the sketch artist (cf. Daumier) in order to convey an impression of being casual observers of society, all the while disguising the economic necessity of producing quick literary pieces. Coates, Carrol F.
