on foreign affairs from The Atlantic Monthly. More on defense from The Atlantic Monthly. From the archives: "Peace Is Hell" (October 2001) Every six months the Pentagon sends nearly 4,000 soldiers to Bosnia and brings the same number home. To see how it's done is to understand why the Pax Americana has stretched the mighty American military to the limit. By William Langewiesche The Agenda The Hollow Army by James Fallows he United States spends more on armed forces than do all other countries combined; the resulting arsenal is more than a match for any opposing power and for nearly any conceivable coalition of foes. No one disputes that American military supremacy is an international reality. But our military has become vulnerable in a way that is obvious to everyone associated with it yet rarely acknowledged by politicians and probably not appreciated by much of the public. The military's people, its equipment, its supplies and spare parts, its logistics systems, and all its other assets are under pressure they cannot sustain. Everything has been operating on an emergency basis for more than two years, with no end to the emergency in sight. The situation was serious before the invasion of Iraq; now it is acute. A dozen years ago, when the Soviet Union collapsed, the United States was freed from the threat that had driven its military planning throughout the preceding decades. In the 1990s scores of bases were closed, and hundreds of thousands of soldiers were demobilized. When the first President Bush launched the Gulf War against Iraq, two million Americans were on active military duty. When the second President Bush launched Operation Iraqi Freedom, the active-duty "end strength," or head count, was only 1.4 million. Total military spending also fell, though much less dramatically, at the end of the first Bush Administration and during Bill Clinton's first term.

Important. The us army s Field Manual 2710, The Law of Land Warfare, is one of the major resources used for educating us military personnel on the law of war.
http://faculty.ed.umuc.edu/~nstanton/FM27-10.htm
Important The U.S. Army's Field Manual 27-10, The Law of Land Warfare , is one of the major resources used for educating U.S. military personnel on the law of war. It contains numerous pertinent direct quotations from the various Geneva and Hague Conventions, as well as several official interpretations of these conventions. I obtained the official online version of FM 27-10 and have posted it here with some minor revisions. The only revisions I've made are as follows: 1. I changed the font to make it easier to read.
2. I added color as background to the title.
3. I amended the note beneath the title to be more understandable.
4. I deleted a lengthy document before the foreword which required certain amendments to the 1956 version, doing so because I deemed it unnecessary since the revisions are contained in the manual itself and are specifically indicated.
5. I deleted a brief "authorization" note at the end as being superfluous.
6. I corrected several obvious spelling and/or typographical errors.
7. I corrected innumerable intra-document links which would not work in order to, with hope, make them work properly.

Welcome to the US Army Transportation Museum 300 Washington Blvd, Besson Hall Fort Eustis, Virginia 23604-5260 (757) 878-1115, DSN 826-1115 The Army Transportation Museum is devoted entirely to the history of U.S. Army transportation from colonial days to present. It offers a unique glimpse of the importance of logistical support to the Army, and is a must when visiting the Virginia Peninsula. The museum was opened in 1969 with displays left over from a recruiting exhibit. Within ten years, a Foundation was organized to raise private funds, and in 1976 the main museum building was dedicated. The Foundation has since built a second structure, the Aviation Pavilion, dedicated in 1987. The Millennium Expansion project will add a major addition to the main museum building. The museum complex occupies six acres just inside the entrance to Fort Eustis, Virginia, eleven miles south of colonial Williamsburg. Nearly 100 full-size vehicles, amphibians and tugboats, aircraft, rail rolling stock and and experimental craft can be seen. The museum is open 9:00 to 4:30 pm daily except Mondays and federal holidays. Admission is free, and plenty of parking is available. The gift shop inside the museum offers a large variety of transportation-related gifts, souvenirs, t-shirts, toys, books and models.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) The Army will prohibit troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan from retiring or leaving the service for other reasons for up to 90 days after arriving at their home bases, military officials said Monday. The American military is suffering stress from global deployments of tens of thousands of troops in the wake of the 2001 attacks on America. An Army official said the latest temporary "stop loss" order was to preserve cohesion in units as they reconstitute after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Pentagon is preparing to begin replacing the roughly 123,000 U.S. troops serving in Iraq and 11,000 in Afghanistan most of them soldiers with fresh troops. Among the first units rotating home beginning this month will be the 101st Airborne Division from Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
