The Role of Literature in Preserving the Armenian National Identity
by Grigor Hakobyan (webmaster)
In the early 1800s, further research of Armenian history and literature by European scholars such as A. Meillet and J. Karst, brought forth into the light the lost manuscripts and ancient writings of the Armenian people. Their remarkable works in the field of Armenian Studies created a new wave of Armenian scholars such as H. Ashcaryan (1876-1953) and M. Abelyan (1865-1944), N. Adonts (1871-1942, T. Toramanyan (1864-1934) who rejuvenated the Armenian folklore, reconstructed more factual history of Armenian people and brought forth the archaic achievements of Armenian architecture. Komitas Vardapet (Solomon Solomonean, 1869-1935, Genocide survivor and spiritual composer of Armenian liturgy) re-created the lost treasures of the uplifting Armenian spiritual music, devising thousands of religious compositions still practiced by the current Armenian churches. His spiritual compositions and inspiring writings of outstanding Armenian writer/poet Raffi, resurrected the creative spirit of Armenian people, reclaiming their attachments to their ancient history, sacred Homeland and spiritual heritage. Sense of national pride and dignity re-emerged among Armenians, giving rise to their new literary works in the face of the coming new century. Critical, journalistic reviews and monographs on contemporary Armenian writers like Y. Ohsakan, Vahan Nalbandean (1876-1902), Nikol Albalean (1873-1947), Simeon Hakobyan (1880-1942), Arsen Terteryan (1882-1953), Haroutiun Surhatyan (1882-1938), Tsolak Hanzadyan (1886-1935), and Polos Makintsyan (1884-1938) began to emerge.

invented the armenian alphabet to translate the bible into Armenian. He also developed a caucasus-albanian and a georgian alphabet. His poems are lyrical and faithful.
Sayat Nova is the armenian gussan, the poet of love, the last troubadour. His poems are sung and recited by Armenians all over the world.
Nahapet Koutchak is the poet of hairen, poems which consist of four verses by 15 syllabs each. His poetry is pure renaissance: live the life intensively and enjoy the beauty of the world. So he writes about love, love which gets its rules only from the heart.
Eghishe Charents is the armenian poet of the 20th century. His work mirrors the history and misery of Armenia of the first half of the twentieth century: from the times of sultan Abdul Hamid II to the 1915 genocid to Bolshevism and Stalinism. His life was full of greatness and tragic, very armenian.

Armenian language Armenian language, member of the Thraco-Phrygian subfamily of the Indo-European family of languages (see Indo-European ). There is evidence that in ancient times a distinct subfamily of Indo-European languages existed that is now called Thraco-Phrygian. To it belonged Phrygian (an ancient and now extinct Indo-European language of Anatolia) and Thracian (a now dead Indo-European tongue of the Balkans in antiquity). Modern Armenian may well be a direct descendant of Phrygian. Today Armenian is the mother tongue of more than 5 million people, of whom over 3 million live in Armenia; 1 million live elsewhere in the republics of the former Soviet Union; and the rest are in the Middle East, the Balkans, and the United States. Armenian is an old, rich, and vital language. Although spoken in antiquity, it was not recorded in writing until the early 5th cent. A.D.

The Heritage
Literature
The first Armenian historical works are at the same time monuments of literature. They have preserved specimens of the pagan Armenian poetry and legends (Haik, Aram, Tork Angegh, Ara Geghetsik and Shamiram, Vahagn Vishapakagh, etc.). Later, parallel with the consolidation of the Christian ideology they gave way to the ecclesiastical literature. The foundation of the Armenian religious poetry is connected with the name of Mesrop Mashtots. A number of his hymns (sharakans) have survived. They include poems, devoted to the church holidays, saints, historical events, etc.
In the 10th century a great break took place in the Armenian literature. A new type of poetry was formed. The first representative of this trend was Grigor Narekatsi (951 - 1003). His delightful hymns and the poem 'Book of Lamentation', by their supreme mastery of language and expression of the most sensitive human emotions are one of the masterpieces of world literature. For the first time, Narekatsi brings love, female beauty, nature and work to the Armenian poetry. Narekatsi is also a great language - builder. Together with grabar (the ancient Armenian language), he uses spoken words, creates new words with the help of word combinations.
After Narekatsi the medieval armenian poetry became more mundane in the poetry of Hovhannes Sarkavag. The poem 'A word of wisdom' (in 118 lines), devoted to a starling is a novelty with its form and content in the medieval art of poetry and its theory. Sarkavag considers poetry to be the imitation of the nature and not a divine gift.

Read an excerpt Writers of Disaster is an ambitious undertaking by one of the foremost authorities on modern Armenian literature. Marc Nichanian, holder of the Armenian studies chair at Columbia University in New York, takes a fresh and uncompromising look at twentieth-century Armenian history and literature. The volume consists of essays on four major twentieth-century Armenian authors: Yeghishé Charents, Gurgen Mahari, Zabel Esayan, and Vahan Totovents. All four authors lived through the national revolution. For all four of them, "the national idea was a perverted and murderous one." Ironically, however, all four were condemned to death or exile precisely for nationalism, victims of Stalin's purges. Nichanian addresses a burning question that historians and diarists have avoided for the better part of a century: "How are we to understand the link between this movement of national liberation and the extermination of the Ottoman Armenians during World War I?"

The Poetic Prophet of Armenia-Paruyr Sevak
Written by Grigor Hakobyan (webmaster)
One of the best poets of Armenian Literature was Paruyr (Sevak) Ghazaryan. He was born in 1924,January 24, at the village of Vedi, Armenia. Paruyr Sevak's father, Rafael Ghazari Soghomonyan (1892-1982) was an educated farmer married to Anahit Gaspari Soghomonyan, who was the mother Paruyr Sevak. She was illiterate, village woman, who was very kind, hard working and religious housewife helping her husband with the fieldwork. Their original family epitet contained the prepositional name, "Ter" which meant: lord or spiritual father and made a reference to the family's religious origin. The forefathers of those families who had that prepositional name have been known to be very educated people, who got their education at the Gevorgyan Seminary of Echmiadzin (the world headquarter of Armenian church). Therefore, people who knew Paruyr Sevak's family were expecting him to have preserved the trait of a "prophet", which he have later evolved in a literary sense of the word, becoming a prophetic spokesperson of Armenian people in their struggle for preserving their ancient history and very rich cultural heritage. Universal humanism and passion toward his native culture bounded his poems.
