Armenian language
Armenian is an Indo-European language spoken in the Caucasus mountains (particularly in the Armenian Republic) and also used by the Armenian Diaspora . It is its own independent branch of the family of the Indo-European languages, with no close relatives. While it contains many Indo-European roots, its phonology and syntax have been influenced by neighboring Caucasian languages and also Turkish , so that it shares a three-way distinction between voiceless, voiced, and ejective stops and fricatives. It also contains many loanword s from Persian , which is a fellow Indo-European language. Many now believe that Armenian is descended from Phrygian (and perhaps related to Thracian and Dacian ), or a close relative of Phrygian. But Armenian, like Albanian , has its origins obscured by its borrowings from foreign languages. Armenian was historically split in to two vaguely-defined primary dialect s: Eastern Armenian , the form spoken in modern-day Armenia, and Western Armenian , the form spoken by Armenians in Anatolia . After the Armenian Genocide , the western form was primarily spoken only by those belonging to the diaspora Armenian is written in the Mingrelian script, devised by monks in the early days of Christianity. While it shows influences from Greek and other Phoenecian-descended writing systems, these influences are not immediately apparent. A similar script is used for the unrelated

Origin
In about 404 or 406 AD, a cleric at the Armenian royal court by the name of Mesrop Mashtots (361-440 AD) invented the Armenian alphabet. He modelled the Armenian alphabet very losely on the Greek alphabet and was also possibly influenced by the Assyrian script. Notable features
  • Written horizontally from left to right. There are a few minor differences in the pronunciation of the letters between the two main dialects of Armenian: Western and Eastern. Most of the letters have numerical values.

Armenian School is held every Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.. We have eight classes - Pre-K and Kindergarten and Grades 1 through 7 - and an outstanding staff of dedicated and experienced teachers, most of whom have been with our school for over 15 years. The teachers spare no effort to instill in their pupils a sense of pride in their Armenian roots as descendants of an ancient race which held an important place in the history and development of civilization. Our church provides a comfortable, pleasant and healthy environment in which our students feel very much at home.
We are fortunate that our Diocese has an excellent Armenian Language Lab and Resource Center (ALLARC) which has been in existence since 1974. During that time the Director of Education, Ms. Sylva der Stepanian, has prepared an excellent curriculum for American-born, non-Armenian speaking children. The Superintendent and teachers of this Armenian School are truly grateful for the outstanding work Sylva has prepared, the programs and workshops she has organized, and her continued support and encouragement.

    About this collection
The main aim of this collection is to provide you with some orientation to help you search for information about learning and teaching the Armenian language and about Armenia, its history, culture and people. It is often difficult not to get confused with the flood of information on internet and to find quickly the information you need. This collection was developed after a detailed study of the information available on internet about Armenia and Armenian language. It comprises links and descriptions to selected web sites, which we found best suited to educational purposes. This collection of web sites is divided into two main parts. The first part deals with sites which provide historical, political and cultural information about Armenia and its people. The second part concentrates on sites which more specifically deal with the learning of the Armenian language. Here, you will find sites with language resources such as dictionaries and grammar guidelines as well as sites offering online exercises. Country and People
In 301, Armenia became the first nation to adopt Christianity as its official state religion. Subsequently, when in 405 Mesrob Mashtots developed the 36-letter Armenian alphabet, the first manuscript translated was the Bible. The development of the Armenian alphabet allowed the proliferation of literature and the strengthening of the National Armenian

Melikian Fund for Armenian Language and Culture Established at ASU
Arizona State University’s Russian and East European Studies Consortium has announced a gift from Phoenix residents Gregory J. and Emma O. Melikian to establish the Melikian Fund for Armenian Language and Cultural Study at ASU. The Melikians, prominent leaders in the Phoenix metropolitan arts community, former owners of the historic Phoenix’s San Carlos Hotel, and founders of Great Western Realty, have established the fund to further Armenian studies in the United States. The new program, which will add the study of Armenian language and culture to the consortium’s Critical Languages Institute, will make ASU one of the few places in the country where this strategically important language is taught. Classes will be offered beginning in the summer of 2002. “This is an strategic gift,” said Professor Stephen K. Batalden, who directs the consortium and the Critical Languages Institute. “In the face of the dramatic transition underway in Armenia and throughout Trans Caucasia, the study of less commonly taught languages such as Armenian is of critical importance for national security and American understanding of the region. In this context, the establishment of the Melikian fund has unique significance.”
