THE PHRASEBASE APPROACH
Many studies show that in most countries, native-speakers only tend to use about unique words and phrases on a daily basis. The question then becomes... which words and phrases? Phrasebase answers this question.
In 1997, I was sent to Japan on an overseas assignment while working for a major software corporation. With a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, I was never required to take a single class in a language other than English. And having been raised in Middle America, I never had any exposure to foreign languages.
Yet, I found myself suddenly living and working in Tokyo, Japan, and confronted head on with a language barrier that hindered my most simple, routine and everyday activities.
Jeff Hock in Tokyo, Japan 1997 Seizing the challenge as an opportunity, I started carrying a notebook and pen everywhere I went. Each day when faced with the slightest problem trying to convey an idea or communicate a thought, I simply wrote it down.
Then right there on the spot, I entered the phrase and had a friend help me enter the corresponding Japanese equivalence. Without knowing it at the time, I was actually learning to write in

Armenian language
Armenian is an Indo-European language spoken in the Caucasus mountains (particularly in the Armenian Republic) and also used by the Armenian Diaspora . It is its own independent branch of the family of the Indo-European languages, with no close relatives. While it contains many Indo-European roots, its phonology and syntax have been influenced by neighboring Caucasian languages and also Turkish , so that it shares a three-way distinction between voiceless, voiced, and ejective stops and fricatives. It also contains many loanwords from Farsi , which is another Indo-European language. Many now believe that Armenian is descended from Phrygian (and perhaps related to Thracian and Dacian ), or a close relative of Phrygian. But Armenian, like Albanian , has its origins obscured by its borrowings from foreign languages. Armenian was historically split in to two vaguely-defined primary dialects Eastern Armenian , the form spoken in modern-day Armenia, and Western Armenian , the form spoken by Armenians in Anatolia . After the Armenian Genocide , the western form was primarily spoken only by those belonging to the diaspora Armenian is written in the Mingrelian script, devised by monks in the early days of Christianity. While it shows influences from Greek and other Phoenecian-descended writing systems, these influences are not immediately apparent. A similar script is used for the unrelated

The Armenian language Group Single Geography Nowadays it is spoken by the Armenian people in the Republic of Armenia and Turkey, and in Armenian settlements elsewhere in the Middle East, Europe and the United States. History Armenian is known to have replaced the earlier languages of the historical Armenian region by at least the 7th century B.C., and it may have been influenced by the languages it replaced. In 410 A.D., according to tradition, Armenian acquired an alphabet invented by St. Mesrob, a monk and scholar. A literature appeared by the 5th century, and the written language of that era, called Grabar or Classical Armenian, while incorporating various changes remained the literary language until the 19th century. Meanwhile, the spoken language developed independently; many dialects appeared, not all mutually intelligible. A nationalist movement in the 19th century led to the creation of two slightly different modern literary dialects which are closer to the spoken language: Eastern or Yerevan Armenian (the official language of the Armenian republic) and Western or Turkish Armenian. The differences in the two dialects are simple. The Armenian alphabet has 2 r -s, 3

I was born in a small Ukrainian town 18 years ago. My parents arrived from Georgia (now one of New Independent States), but they are not Georgians. My father is Armenian, my mother has Greek origin, but she was born and grew up in Georgia. It happened so that we arrived in Ukraine and we have lived here since then. So, I have three native languages: Armenian, Ukrainian, and Russian. At home my native language is Armenian, at the university - Ukrainian. I communicate with my friends in Russian. It is very difficult to save your mother tongue when you live in a foreign environment, that's why we do everything possible and impossible for saving Armenian.
