Armenian Language Armenian is a complex and beautiful language. Except for a transition into middle Armenian during the 10th-12th centuries and into a modern form in the 19th century, it has been continuously used for more than 1500 years as it was first created, borrowing traces of words and expressions from Hindu, Persian, Arabic, Greek and Latin along the way. In its current form in the Republic, it uses a lively and vibrant incorporation of words from Russian, French, English and other countries. It is a language alive.
Useful Phrases and Words

Armenian has its own unique alphabet, devised between 401-406 c.e. by Mesrop Mashtots (361-440 c.e.) under the patronage of King Vramshapuh and Catolicos Sahak Partev. Until that time, most written versions of Armenian were in Greek. During the turbulent years of the 4th century c.e., the new alphabet was treated as a divine gift from God, a weapon of intellect over the dark forces of fanaticism. The first sentence written in Armenian was "To know wisdom and gain instruction; to discern the words of understanding…" Armenians were quick to use the new alphabet, translating Greek, Roman, Persian, Arabic, Egyptian, even Chinese treatises into Armenian. The Matenadaran in Yerevan contains more than 25,000 manuscripts dating to the 5th century. Many of these are Armenian translations of philosophical, scientific, historical and religious writings going back as far as the Hellenistic Greece. Some are the only existing versions of the originals.

Armenian language Armenian language, member of the Thraco-Phrygian subfamily of the Indo-European family of languages (see Indo-European ). There is evidence that in ancient times a distinct subfamily of Indo-European languages existed that is now called Thraco-Phrygian. To it belonged Phrygian (an ancient and now extinct Indo-European language of Anatolia) and Thracian (a now dead Indo-European tongue of the Balkans in antiquity). Modern Armenian may well be a direct descendant of Phrygian. Today Armenian is the mother tongue of more than 5 million people, of whom over 3 million live in Armenia; 1 million live elsewhere in the republics of the former Soviet Union; and the rest are in the Middle East, the Balkans, and the United States. Armenian is an old, rich, and vital language. Although spoken in antiquity, it was not recorded in writing until the early 5th cent. A.D.

Some are the only existing versions of the originals. It has been said that no more important tool was given to Armenians then their alphabet, for it has preserved their identity during invasions, and allowed them to avoid assimilation. If Russian was the international tongue of the Soviet Union, then Armenian is the International tongue that binds almost 9 million Armenians around the world.
The Armenian Alphabet Originally there were 36 letters in the Armenian alphabet. Three letters were added in the 10th-12th cc, for a total of 39 letters. Mashtots’ alphabet begins with the Armenian letter for the sound "ah" and ends with the letter for the sound "Q". This was no accident: The letter ("a") stands for Astvatz ("Ast-VAHTZ," God) and the letter ("k") stands for Kristos ("Kris-TOS," Christ). Coincidentally, all Indo-European languages begin with the sound "ah". This chart shows the alphabet, a transliterated sound (Latin letter equivalent), and common pronunciations. Pronunciations of vowels are closer to the British long sounds than the flat American dialect.

Armenian language
Armenian is an Indo-European language spoken in the Caucasus mountains (particularly in the Armenian Republic) and also used by the Armenian Diaspora . It is its own independent branch of the family of the Indo-European languages, with no close relatives. While it contains many Indo-European roots, its phonology and syntax have been influenced by neighboring Caucasian languages and also Turkish , so that it shares a three-way distinction between voiceless, voiced, and ejective stops and fricatives. It also contains many loanwords from Persian , which is another Indo-European language. Many now believe that Armenian is descended from Phrygian (and perhaps related to Thracian and Dacian ), or a close relative of Phrygian. But Armenian, like Albanian , has its origins obscured by its borrowings from foreign languages. Armenian was historically split in to two vaguely-defined primary dialects Eastern Armenian , the form spoken in modern-day Armenia, and Western Armenian , the form spoken by Armenians in Anatolia . After the Armenian Genocide , the western form was primarily spoken only by those belonging to the diaspora Armenian is written in the Mingrelian script, devised by monks in the early days of Christianity. While it shows influences from Greek and other Phoenecian-descended writing systems, these influences are not immediately apparent. A similar script is used for the unrelated

of the Indo-European languages
The common ancestor of these languages has been traced to Asia rather than to Europe, the authors say. The once-clear distinction between the family's Eastern and Western branches is now blurred M igrations and Cultural Diffusion carried the Indo-European protolanguage from the homeland, which the authors place in the Transcaucasus (see Historical Armenia maps), and fragmented it into dialects. Some spread west to Anatolia and Greece, others southwest to Iran and India. Most Western languages stem from an Eastern branch that rounded the Caspian Sea. Contact with Semitic languages in Mesopotamia and with Kartvelian languages in the Caucasus led to the adoption of many foreign words.

THE ARMENIAN LANGUAGE
The Armenian language is an independent member of the Indo-European language that belongs to the western branch of the European-Aryan family and traces its roots back to the time of Armeno-Phrygians, Hayes, and Urartians. There is also kinships with the ancient Hittites, Mitanni, Hurrian, and some Old Persian. Modern linguists claim that the Armenian language has retained its nationality from ancient times to the present, and that it possesses great vitality despite many persecutions Since the Armenians did not have their own alphabet, a native of the Province of Taron, Mesrop Mashtots , undertook the task to remedy the situation at the beginning of the fifth century A.D. With the religious Patriarch Sahag , the scholar Mesrob Mahtots developed a new alphabet containing 36 letters, which was used to write the Armenian language. In the language as then written were composed translations of the Bible and other pious works as well as original compositions by Bishop Eznik . This language is still preserved as the ritual language of the Armenian Church, and up to the 19
