WHAT'S NEW at ICS!
We have stepped up our fundraising activities in an effort to offset our increasing costs. This is discussed more in the "Message from the Editor" below. There have been some changes in the bulletin boards too. Dorie Straus is the new moderator for the Cellist-by-Night chat board (thanks, Dorie!). We have also added a "Professional Performers and Educators" board to our collection of bulletin boards. This was done in the hopes that we will get more participation from the many professionals out there. It is co-moderated by Robert Battey (thanks, Bob!) and Tim Finholt. Many will be happy to know that we do not envision the ICS adding any more chat boards, (though we are pondering what to do about college-age cellists).
MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR
The traffic on our website has increased to the point that our internet service provider is sending us overage notices, requiring that we upgrade our account or they will disable the website, which translates to higher fees, of course. This is great news because it means that our website is becoming a highly-used resource on the internet (nobody likes to eat in an empty restaurant), but it does require that we step up our fund-raising activities. Because of this, we are looking to the membership to help us financially in as many fun and easy ways as possible.

Bilingual Education and Equal Treatment By Jang Young Bang America and Bilingual Education Since the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the 15 th century, countless people all over the world have set their footsteps onto this vast, pristine land, America. Those of the various ethnicities first started with 13 English colonies, won their independence from England, and succeeded in creating a nation, the United States of America. As the name suggests, the core foundation of this country is the union of various states and the people holding various interests and ethnic origins. In the less-than-a-half-millennium history of the U.S., Americans have faced many moments of conflicts over controversial issues ranging from slavery to Vietnam War, and many of them have made great efforts to resolve the conflicts in order to uphold the union of the states as well as the people. Today, America is torn apart over a significant issue, bilingual education in the public school. Many Americans have expressed their views on bilingual education through books, journals, and newspaper articles. In order to promote the solidarity among the U.S. citizens, some Americans argue that public school classes should be taught only in English. Others argue that in order for the smooth assimilation of new immigrants, school should provide bilingual courses specially designed for new comers, who are not yet familiar with English. Along with Californian voters' approval of the Prop.227, the scope of the bilingual education issue has extended. Now, the issue of bilingual education in public school does not only address societal solidarity and easy assimilation of immigrants, but also the equal treatment. In the view of the equal treatment, the role of bilingual education in public school raises a new set of questions. Does bilingual education in public school render an unfair treatment of students? Does bilingual education favor language minority students over mainstream students? Does the implementation of Prop.227 violate language minority students' right to equal treatment, that is, equal access to learning?

Well, I can't quite believe it, but it's true. After I got an e-mail from Columbine asking what had happened with the teaching job, I looked back over my journal, and realized that I completely forgot to tell y'all the outcome: I got the job! More specifically, I got not one, but two, yes, two courses! From June 21 to August 17, I'll be teaching Basic Composition and Intermediate Composition at Salt Lake Community College Let's not even bring up the whole issue of what happens if the Mormon students stumble across my web page. Meep. (Actually, I suspect I will have to discuss that issue at some point, but I'm not going to think about it yet.) I leave for Salt Lake on June 12th (it would have been a little later, but Kevin may be going to a conference from the 13th - 17th, and it'll make my life much easier if he's there when I arrive (in a blind panic)). That means that before then I need to:
  • sort through all my papers
  • pack (which includes teaching clothes, regular clothes, Clean Sheets files, writing files, textbooks for the courses I haven't finished yet, my teddy bear, some photos, my teaching books/notes, Jed's laptop that I'm still borrowing, disks and other assorted computer junk, formal Indian clothes for Roshani's wedding, jewelry for same, and I don't even know what else)

Assyrian art. Assyrian art. An Assyrian artistic style distinct from that of Babylonian art (see Sumerian and Babylonian art ), which was the dominant contemporary art in Mesopotamia, began to emerge c.1500 B.C. and lasted until the fall of Nineveh in 612 B.C. The characteristic Assyrian art form was the polychrome carved stone relief that decorated imperial monuments. The precisely delineated reliefs concern royal affairs, chiefly hunting and war making. Predominance is given to animal forms, particularly horses and lions, which are magnificently represented in great detail. Human figures are comparatively rigid and static but are also minutely detailed, as in triumphal scenes of sieges, battles, and individual combat. Among the best known of Assyrian reliefs are the lion-hunt alabaster carvings showing Assurnasirpal II (9th cent. B.C.
