Newsletter February 2004 Rice is Life! Welcome to 2004! Last year was the International Year for Fresh Water and many projects concentrated on our use of water, finding ways to save water and helping others to have access to fresh, clean water. 2004 is the International Year of Rice meaning that projects will have a focus on food this year. Rice provides 20% of the world’s dietary energy supply and is a good source of vitamins and dietary fibre. Almost 3,000 million people share the culture and traditions of rice; wherever rice is grown it enters people’s lives not only as a daily food but also in religious festivals, wedding parties, in paintings and songs. Asian farmers compare rice to a ‘grain of gold’. The Japanese see rice as the very heart of their culture. Rice has a key role in food security and so it is subject to much government intervention and restrictive trade practices which need to be addressed. New methods of rice production – it is a water hungry crop – ways to improve its nutrient content and efficient on-farm processing are being researched. For more information go to www.fao.org/rice2004/ Catholic Earthcare Australia (CEA) will shortly release a CD-ROM which will provide a valuable resource for young people. Themes to be explored include politics of food distribution, right to healthy food, risks of genetically engineered food and food as sacrament. Visit their website www.catholicearthcareoz.net for a variety or resources or phone Jacqui (02) 9956 5800.

A Shared Interdisciplinary Curriculum for the Sixth Grade Tina Di Chiara
The sixthe social studies curriculum focuses on the basic history of countries in the Eastern Hemisphere. As a language arts teacher, it is my desire to align the content of my courses with that of the social studies courses in order to reduce fragmentation of learning and help students in their development of a more unified view of their education. My original intention was to create a yearlong literature-based curriculum using texts that expand, extend, and enrich what was being learned in history. A dilemma presented itself in that I also wished to make the content of my classes more relevant to the lives of my students. To focus on the Eastern Hemisphere would be to stray far from my initial aim to explore the cultural histories my students could most identify with, such as the cultures of Latin and North America. However, after much consideration, it became clear that the basic study of Eastern Hemispheric countries lends itself wonderfully to a yearlong comparative view of the U.S. culture(s) and the principles that drive the American Dream. Under the metaphorical theme of a voyage, students will travel to foreign places and times, and they will read and hear the stories of people their own age from the pages of novels, short stories, biographies, and works of nonfiction.

Dr. Death and the Nuremberg Laws
The killing of a human being on one of the nation's most watched television programs last Sunday night was a horror. Many of us for years had read of Dr. Jack Kevorkian's "physician-assisted suicides" for terminally ill people and looked upon it as possibly the most humane act to end a person's suffering. However, viewing the act, the lethal injection, the impersonal behavior of the doctor, the aloneness of the patient on 60 Minutes shed new light on this obscene practice. Coincidentally, this month, Dr. Michael J. Franzblau, a physician who has dedicated his life to revealing the evils of medical experimentation during the Third Reich, spoke to an audience at North Shore Community College. He explained that the "German Volk," which began to gain acceptance in the late 19th century, was a concept which lent an almost mystical quality to the German people as a pure race. Then what did that say about all others who were not Aryans? They were the minorities and the disabled - people who were viewed as placing a burden on the nation. Contrary to the fundamental code of physicians "to do no harm," doctors of the Third Reich had to place the state above the individual.

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar The country, whose male population is unkind unreligious and unaware of the distinction between the good and the evil and don't care about justice and fairness and where abiding the rituals is the chief preoccupation of religion, should not give birth to girls!
[His god-like kindness expressed in the 2nd volume of publication on Remarriage of Widows.]
The materialistic world of the West looks down on India as a poor nation. That assessment is and remains empirically valid, no doubt, even at the end of the twentieth century.
But a society, nation or country that is ever endowed with a great man with a personality, grace and kind soul like Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar can be impoverished but hardly poor! Popularly known as Vidyasagar (meaning 'sea of knowledge'), Ishwar Chandra himself was the seat of learning. A gift of God his life was a glittering gem of morality, an exposition of the bliss of modest living, a blue sky of compassion, an everest of unfaltering dedication, a fountain of inspiration, a river of love and indeed an ocean of kindness.
Watch closely how this man lived his life, how he shared his time between his family, his friends, his community and his nation, how he spent his endless energy for awakening awareness of his countrymen and for the emancipation of his nation, how he gave away every comfort of life for the sake of others and your heart will warm up to the message of this man's life. And your life will never be the same again! His graceful gift of love and affection will enrich your existence and humble your thoughts for ever.

These students receive academic instruction in their native language during the early years of schooling then "transition" into mainstream English once they are proficient enough to participate fully in all-English instruction and activities. The rest of these students are in all-English education. They are, essentially, expected to learn English while acquiring academic competencies in language arts, mathematics, and other curriculum areas.

SUBJECT - "MEDICARE: ITS CONTEXT AND EVOLUTION" THE POPULARITY OF THE MUCH-MALIGNED MEDICARE PROGRAM I. INTRODUCTION It has become almost habitual among policy analysts and policy makers to adorn the federal Medicare program with derogatory adjectives such as "moribund," "obsolete," "inefficient" and "unsustainable." It is argued that the program has not kept pace with the pace of innovations in the private health-insurance market and that the private sector could administer it more efficientlyhence more cheaply than can the public sector, thus delivering more "value" for the dollar.
