    History
Poor little Armenia has been the mouflon in the sandwich between warring nations and factions for millennia, and its people have been used as spear fodder time and time again. They've been shipped or fled back and forth across burning deserts with shifting borders at the whim of empire builders in far flung capitals. National borders - historic and present - tend to waver depending on who you're talking to, but what is certain is that the isthmus between the Black and the Caspian seas has long been a who-what-where pressure cooker of ethnic migrations, competing religions, jostling international egos, envy, ethnic hatred, warring armies, grand victories and devastating losses. The first empires and kingdoms that encompassed parts or all of present day Armenia were the Urartu (originally under King Argistis, who built a fort at present day Yerevan), the Persian Achaemenian, Alexander the Great's Macedonian Empire, the Seleucid, the Roman and the Byzantine. The Persians threw a punch around 428 AD, and when they tried to impose the Zoroastrian religion in 451 they sparked a revolt that eventually won Armenians a degree of political and religious freedom. Muslim Arabs ventured north in the 7th century AD, and local big shot Ashot Bagratuni the Carnivorous (no prizes for guessing his favourite food) came to power and launched a period of prestige for his line. But in the 11th century the Byzantines expanded into the region again, and scarcely had the dust settled than the Turks marched in. Before the end of the 12th century came Egyptian Mamluks and European crusaders (who didn't rule but managed to bring in a few Western style reforms and leave some French words). The Persians and the Ottoman Turks were the next to come to blows in the region, and the Ottomans managed to cling on to most of Armenia for the better part of 400 years.

    Origins
Armenians are an Indo-European race, whose origins are not clearly known. Specialists speculate that the Armenians migrated to the Armenian Highland via the Balkans or the Caucasus. At that time the area was inhabited by the Urartians, who seem to have assimilated very quickly and absorbed the language of the newcomer Armenians. An advanced Urartian nation existed at the turn of the first millennium before Christ, later replaced by the first Armenian kingdom in the sixth century B.C.. This kingdom united the tribes of Hayasi and Armen. Tigran the Great
Armenia was independent on and off starting in the ninth century, BC. At times it was splintered, at other times engulfed temporarily by neighbors, but until the Armenian genocide in 1915, large numbers of Armenians lived throughout the Caucasus and Anatolia, from the Mediterranean, to the Black and Caspian seas. At its largest, the Armenian Empire encompassed that entire area under the rule of Tigran the Great, shortly before the time of Christ's birth. Christianity
The work of the apostles Thaddeus and Bartholomew in Armenia after Jesus' crucifixion set the stage for the official conversion of Armenia in 301 A.D. to Christianity, the first country to officially do so. Traditionally, it was Saint Gregory the Illuminator who's prayers healed the king, causing the pagan king, and country to become officially Christian. A century later the monk Mesrop Mashtots invented the Armenian alphabet in order to translate the Bible.

Just Getting Started History begins with the first great Ancestral Armenian Empire, Urartu, which rose around 1250 BCE, a potent rival to the Assyrians and Babylonians.
Then there is the Beginning to Get Old History , which begins at the time of Troy, goes past the Old Dynasty era to the Cradle of Civilization, when humans created the first cities, discovered the wheel, and uncovered the secrets of copper, bronze and iron. Armenia, officially Republic of Armenia (1994 estimated population 3,522,000), 11,500 square miles (29,785 square kilometers), South Western Asia, in the South Caucasus; formerly a constituent republic of the USSR. It is a mountainous country bounded by Georgia (North); Turkey (West); Azerbaijan (West and East); and Iran (South). Major bodies of water are Lake Sevan and the Araks and Razdan rivers. In addition to the Armenian majority, there are Azeri, Russian, and Kurdish minorities. The official language is Armenian. The predominant religion is the Armenian Apostolic church, an Monophysitic Christian church.
Yerevan city (1990 estimated population 1,200,000) is the capital of Armenia on the Razdan River. Archaeological evidence indicates that the fortress of Yerbuni stood on the city's site in the 8th century B.C. Known in the 7th cent. A.D., Yerevan was the capital of the kingdom of Armenia under Persian rule and later (14th-19th century) part of the empires of Timur, Persia, Turkey, and Russia. In 1920 it became the capital of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, which became independent in 1991 when the USSR disintegrated. Other major cities include Giumri (Leninakan), Vanadzor (Kirovakan), and St. Etchmiadzin.
In 1918 Russian Armenia became independent under German auspices (under the Brest-Litovsk Treaty), but in 1920 an autonomous Greater Armenia was created from the Turkish and Soviet Russian areas. In that year, however, Russian Armenia fell to the Communists and was made a Soviet republic; the 1921 Russo-Turkish Treaty established the present boundaries, ending Armenian independence. From 1920 to 1991 Armenia was a republic in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. In the late 1980s, under Soviet President Gorbachev's policies of glasnost and perestroika, Armenians began seeking independence. In a 1991 referendum Armenians voted overwhelmingly for independence from the USSR, and the country joined the newly established Commonwealth of Independent States when the USSR collapsed (December 1991).

    BACKGROUND
Armenia is a landlocked, mountainous country located in the southern region of the Caucasus mountains. The smallest of the former Soviet republics, Armenia covers nearly 30,000 square kilometers and is bordered by Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east and southwest (Nakhichevan) and Iran to the south. Continuing tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh have led to a blockade of Armenia by its neighbors, making the country entirely dependent on Georgia for relief supplies and commercial goods. Continued civil unrest in Georgia has placed this vital link in a precarious position. 68% of Armenia's 3.5 million people live in urban areas, with the remaining 32% percent living in rural areas. 300,000 Armenian refugees and displaced persons now live in Armenia. Since the massive earthquake of 1988 , Armenia has been hit by a series of political and economic crises. The four year blockade by its neighbors, the breakup of the former Soviet Union, and the lingering problems of refugees and displaced persons have left the Armenian population in a state of shock.

    History
Historical Background ARMENIAN CIVILIZATION HAD its beginnings in the sixth century B.C. In the centuries following, the Armenians withstood invasions and nomadic migrations, creating a unique culture that blended Iranian social and political structures with Hellenic and later Christianliterary traditions. For two millennia, independent Armenian states existed sporadically in the region between the northeastern corner of the Mediterranean Sea and the Caucasus Mountains, until the last medieval state was destroyed in the fourteenth century. A landlocked country in modern times, Armenia was the smallest Soviet republic from 1920 until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The future of an independent Armenia is clouded by limited natural resources and the prospect that the military struggle to unite the Armenians of Azerbaijan's Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region with the Republic of Armenia will be a long one. The Armenians are an ancient people who speak an Indo-European language and have traditionally inhabited the border regions common to modern Armenia, Iran, and Turkey. They call themselves
