Country List World Factbook Home The World Factbook Armenia Introduction Armenia Background: Armenia prides itself on being the first nation to formally adopt Christianity (early 4th century). Despite periods of autonomy, over the centuries Armenia came under the sway of various empires including the Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Persian, and Ottoman. It was incorporated into Russia in 1828 and the USSR in 1920. Armenian leaders remain preoccupied by the long conflict with Muslim Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh, a primarily Armenian-populated region, assigned to Soviet Azerbaijan in the 1920s by Moscow. Armenia and Azerbaijan began fighting over the area in 1988; the struggle escalated after both countries attained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. By May 1994, when a cease-fire took hold, Armenian forces held not only Nagorno-Karabakh but also a significant portion of Azerbaijan proper. The economies of both sides have been hurt by their inability to make substantial progress toward a peaceful resolution.

A landlocked republic with Turkey to the west and Georgia to the north, Armenia has seen great changes since the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Once dubbed the Soviet 'silicon valley', Armenia's economy collapsed when its old markets disappeared. OVERVIEW
    FACTS
LEADERS MEDIA It has since recovered significantly, but job creation and poverty reduction have not kept pace with growth. Armenia also suffers from a trade blockade, imposed by neighbouring Turkey and Azerbaijan since the dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh. The conflict over the predominantly Armenian-populated region in Azerbaijan overshadowed Armenia's return to independence in 1991. Full-scale war broke out the same year as ethnic Armenians in Karabakh fought for independence, supported by troops and resources from Armenia proper. A ceasefire in place since 1994 has failed to deliver any lasting solution. Armenia has always experienced waves of emigration, but the present exodus is causing much alarm. It is estimated that Armenia has lost 20% of its population in recent years, as young families leave for what they hope will be a better life abroad. The negative consequences for the economy have been widespread.

Summary of Events Leading up to the Genocide
Somewhat surprisingly to many, Armenians and Turks lived in relative harmony in the Ottoman empire for centuries. Armenians were known as the "loyal millet". During these times, although Armenians were not equal and had to put up with certain special hardships, they were pretty well accepted and there was relatively little violent conflict. Things began to change for a number of reasons. Nationalism, a new force in the world reared its head and made ethnic groupings self-conscious, and the Ottoman Empire began to crumble. It became known as "the sick man of Europe" and the only thing holding it together really was the European powers lack of agreement on how to split it up. As other Christian minorities gained their independence one by one, the Armenians became more isolated as the only major Christian minority. Armenians and Turks began to have conflicting dreams of the future. Some Armenians began to call for independence like the Greeks and others had already received, while some Turks began to envision a new Pan-Turkic empire spreading all the way to Turkic speaking parts of Central Asia. Armenians were the only ethnic group in between these two major pockets of Turkish speakers and the nationalist Turks wanted to get rid of them altogether.

    98. Armenian Allegations Of Genocide - Main Issues - Government & Policy - Turkish E

    http://www.turkishembassy.org/governmentpolitics/issuesarmenian.htm
    Home Main Issues
Armenian Allegations of Genocide The Issue and the Facts The Issue: Whether within the events leading to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire genocide was perpetrated against Armenian Ottoman citizens in Eastern Anatolia. The Ottoman Empire ruled over all of Anatolia and significant parts of Europe, North Africa, the Caucasus and Middle East for over 700 hundred years. Lands once Ottoman dominions today comprise more than 30 independent nations. go to top Relevance: The truth demands that every side of a story be told. Fundamental freedoms enshrined in the U.S. Constitution protect those who choose to challenge the Armenian American view. The complete story of the vast suffering of this period has not yet been written. When that story is told, the following facts must not be forgotten. go to top FACT 1: Demographic studies prove that prior to World War I, fewer than 1.5 million Armenians lived in the entire Ottoman Empire. Thus, allegations that more than 1.5 million Armenians from eastern Anatolia died must be false.

Armenia: Investigate Abuses in Political Crackdown

Hundreds of Opposition Members Detained; Protests Put Down by Police Violence

(New York, May 4, 2004)—Armenian authorities must investigate abuses committed in the government’s recent crackdown against the political opposition, Human Rights Watch today said in a briefing paper that provided new details on the mass arrest and police violence against opposition supporters.

Electoral Crackdowns in Armenia Ruled Unlawful

In February and March, Human Rights Watch quickly responded to reports of arbitrary arrest of opposition activists in Armenia following the first round of presidential elections. Our research showed how the law punishing public order misdemeanors (the Soviet-era Code of Administrative Offenses) was abused in order to imprison key opposition campaign staff and peaceful demonstrators.
