Legislation Armenian culture B.C. experienced the strong influence of the Shoumer and Accadian cultures. These cultures especially influenced the development of fine arts, cuneiform, even the first Armenian language-Aramian, which was almost completely lost until A.D. At that time people could build beautiful towns, they were skillful craftsmen and they were able to make beautiful things from various processed metals, particularly iron and bronze. Urartian people had various myths and legends, unfortunately those were lost within the time. Also Armenians built a lot of temples dedicated to gods, which were very much like the Hellenistic temples or pantheons.

Archeologists have found many golden coins, monuments, and statues, etc. Despite the fact that the country adopted Christianity some of the Pagan traditions were so strong that

"The ASP trip was incredible. I will always remember every wonderful day and every awesome person all of whom will probably remain life-long friends."
-Marin Hoplamazian of St. John Chuch of Southfield, MI, 2003 ASP Participant OVERVIEW The ACYOA Armenia Service Program (ASP) provides participants with the unique opportunity to gain first hand experience of the Armenian culture and people while serving as mentors and role models for children in need. For two weeks, ASP participants act as counselors at Camp Siranoosh in Yeghegnazdor, about three hours southeast of Yerevan. The camp, sponsored by the Diocese of Siunik and FAR (Fund for Armenian Relief), is a summer haven for children, ages 7- 14, who have lost family members in the conflict with Azerbaijan. At camp, participants work with the local Armenian staff implementing educational, religious and recreational programs. On weekends, the group travels to nearby churches, monasteries and cultural sites. After a two-week stay at camp, the group lodges in Yerevan and continues to tour the region.

http://www.lcousa.org/asp/testimonials.asp
Here are some quotes directly from past LCO campaign participants:
"...I know that when I reflect back on this experience I will feel ecstatic about the work we accomplished, the things we saw, and the bonds we forged."
Hovig Saghdejian, Ayroum 2003, California, USA
"Ourakh yeghir" (be happy). Really, that’s all I’ve been hearing since I got here. Everyone, the LCO staff, family friends, Yerevan volunteers on the trip as well as the villagers themselves have wanted only to welcome us, help us, make us happy and make us laugh. That widespread attitude says something of the culture – it’s good that I came to my homeland for the first time to share that special feeling."
Karina Totah, Ayroum 2003, DC, USA
"My most memprable experience was being so warmly taken care by an old village couple, receiving gifts from them, giving them gifts and establishing bonds."
Naira Der-Kiureghian, Ayroum 2003, CA, USA
"Volunteering for LCO has not only been a rewarding experience but also an emotional one. I saw not only the country growing but also saw what Armenia and its people had gone through in the past decade. Being part of LCO made me open my eyes to a world of hardship and struggle but also laughter and joy that will never be forgotten. Having my people accept me with open arms and the warmest welcomes makes a geographically distant country exceptionally close to my heart."
Shirley Oghamian, Ayroum 2003, CA, USA

< BACK TO HISTORY CONTENTS Three issues combined by 1988 to stimulate a broad-based Armenian nationalist movement. First, the urbanization and industrialization of Armenia had brought severe ecological problems, the most threatening of which was posed by a nuclear power plant at Metsamor, west of Erevan. Second, many Armenians were angered by the pervasive corruption and arrogance of the communist elite, which had become entrenched as a privileged ruling class. Third and most immediate, Armenians were increasingly concerned about the status of Nagorno-Karabakh, an autonomous region of Azerbaijan having nearly 200,000 Armenians living within Azerbaijan under Azerbaijani rule, isolated from mainstream Armenian culture. In addition to fearing the loss of their numerical superiority, Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh resented restrictions on the development of the Armenian language and culture in the region. Although the Armenians generally lived better than Azerbaijanis in neighboring districts, their standard of living was not as high as that of their countrymen in Armenia. Hostile to the Azerbaijanis, whom they blamed for their social and cultural problems, the vast majority of Karabakh Armenians preferred to learn Russian rather than Azerbaijani, the language of Azerbaijan. As early as the 1960s, clashes occurred between the Karabakh Armenians and the Azerbaijanis, and Armenian intellectuals petitioned Moscow for redress of their situation in Nagorno-Karabakh. )

It is a great privilege to present "Work For Armenia" internship program developed by the New York Armenian Students' Association. Program Overview A joint effort of the ASA of New York, Armenian Graduate Muskie Students' Association and Armenian Tourism Development Agency of Yerevan, Armenia the program is designed to attract the youth and young professionals living in the Diaspora to visit Armenia and to work in their expert capacity in their historical homeland. The timeframe of such assignment could vary from two weeks to a month and extend over longer periods of time. Our hope is that the outcome of the successful implementation of the concept will produce: a steady en masse transfer of modern business mentality and practices to Armenia's corporate world; add transparency and accountability to the local firms; and boost country's economic efficiency and cultural revival in the long run. Opening up new possibilities, the program provides a great and exciting way to work in an expatriate capacity in a different business culture, allowing for development of greater flexibility in a professional environment. During their internship in Armenia, the participants will have an opportunity to work in competitive local and international companies present in Armenia. It is one of the most exciting ways to get acquainted with the Armenian culture and help one nation establish an even stronger link between its two integral parts - Armenia and the Diaspora.

    Rural Armenia Initiative
Keeping the heartland of Armenian culture vital
COAF has concentrated most of its resources on rural communities that are in immediate danger of extinction and trailing behind the cities in economic development. Many of the children in these communities are faced daily with malnutrition, no drinking water, and lack of basic conditions to live in human dignity. Vulnerable to the growing divide between the fast-changing cities and the neglected country side, these once tightly-woven, family-oriented communities with strong Armenian cultural traditions are losing ground as parents and young adults abandon their ancestral homes for economic opportunity in the city or other countries. These historically precious villages, often considered the soul of the Armenian culture, are on the brink of extinction, which could occur as soon as within one generation.

A once-productive people caught in a downward spiral
The 5,000 inhabitants of Karakert are a spirited, proud and educated community that, in the aftermath of the collapsed Soviet system, found themselves with an unemployment rate of nearly 100 percent. Without any income to generate resources for infrastructure maintenance, their living conditions have degenerated to the point that residents live without running water or functioning toilets. Children are surrounded by broken windows, heatless homes, unsafe schools with cracking walls and ceilings, and no nearby access to professional health care. Roads are in such disrepair that even the delivery of basic services and raw materials is a major impediment to resuming the food processing industry that once employed many residents.
