Armenian Culture has earned its place in the history of the world by virtue of the fact that it is one of the oldest, continuous civilizations today. Throughout the centuries, Armenians have created a unique and remarkable culture at the intersection of east and west. Even though countless invaders attempted to destroy it, archaeological research testifies to its existence alongside that of the Babylonians and the Assyrians from at least the III Millennium BC, proven by excavations at Erebuni, Teyshebaini and Medzamor. In 301AD, Armenians were the first nation to officially adopt Christianity as their national state religion , and this influenced many developments in Armenian culture, and specifically architecture. Replacing pagan temples with the first churches, Christian influences created architectural masterpieces such as the churches of Hripsime Gayane and the gem of 7th Century Armenian architecture

If you were to classify the Caucasus by language, it could be broken up into three main groups - Caucasians, Indo-Europeans and Turks. Armenian is an Indo-European language, and are the largest group of Indo-European speakers in Caucasia. The family of languages is reckoned to have originated in western Turkey and spread west into Europe and east as far as India by 1000 BC. The speakers think it rich and beautiful. Armenians converted early to Christianity (the oldest churches were founded in the 4th century), and the head of the Armenian Orthodox Church, the Supreme Catholicos, lives in Echmiadzin. The Armenian rite, the Church's ritual of worship, includes ancient, rhythmical chants. Lamb is the staple meat, and kashlama , or boiled lamb, a specialty. The trout from Lake Sevan is excellent. Fruit and vegetables are generally not hard to find, despite the Azeri economic blockade. Beans, chickpeas, eggplant, yoghurt, tabouleh and other dishes common in the Middle East are the norm in Armenia. The local konyak , or brandy, is first rate, and it's claimed that Winston Churchill preferred the Armenian to the French variety.

Country Info Armenia Introduction Armenia General Data Armenia Maps Armenia Culture ... Armenia Time and Date Armenia Culture Back to Top The Armenians became active in literature and many art forms at a very early point in their civilization. Urartian metalworking and architecture have been traced back to about 1000 B.C. The beginning of truly national art is usually fixed at the onset of the Christian era. The three great artistic periods coincided with times of independence or semi-independence: from the fifth to the seventh century; the Bagratid golden age of the ninth and tenth centuries; and the era of the kingdom of Lesser Armenia in the twelfth to fourteenth centuries. Of especially high quality in the earlier periods were work in gold and bronze, as well as temples, military fortifications, and aqueducts. In the early Christian era, classical church architecture was adapted in a series of cathedrals. The circular domes typical of Armenian churches were copied in Western Europe and in Ottoman Turkey. The best example of the distinctive architectural sculpture used to adorn such churches is the early tenth-century Church of the Holy Cross on an island in Lake Van. The architecture of contemporary Erevan is distinguished by the use of pinkish tufa stone and a combination of traditional Armenian and Russian styles. Armenian painting is generally considered to have originated with the illumination of religious manuscripts that thrived from the ninth to the seventeenth century. Armenian painters in Cilicia and elsewhere enriched Byzantine and Western formulas with their unique use of color and their inclusion of Oriental themes acquired from the Mongols. Many unique Armenian illuminated manuscripts remain in museums in the West.

ELEMENTS OF PRE-CHRISTIAN RELIGION IN ARMENIA A Summary of Pre-Christian Armenia's Spiritual History Archaeological evidence exists of agriculture from the Neolithic and metalwork from the Aeneolithic and Bronze Ages in the Armenian Highland. Little is known about the religion of this pre-historical culture as there are no indigenous written sources. However, pictographic rock carvings in the mountains of Gegham and Vardenis (near Lake Sevan) as well as astronomic observatories and places of worship of celestial bodies, comparative to Stonehenge, in Metsamor (in the Ararat valley, approximately 20 miles; 33 km to the West of Yerevan) and Sisian (in the Syunik province, approximately 137 miles; 160 km southeast of Yerevan), bear witness to the religious perceptions of those times. The Sumerian epic "Enmerkar and the Lord of Aratta" describes the correspondence between Enmerkar, the ruler of Erech, a city-state in southern Mesopotamia, and the Lord of Aratta, a prosperous city-state separated from Erech by seven mountain ranges. Enmerkar demanded tribute from the people of Aratta. Among his demands were stones and workers to build a temple. It does not seem farfetched to assume that the kingdom of 'Aratta' mentioned in this Sumerian inscription, is the same civilization that became known to us as 'Urartu' in the area called 'the Land of Ararat.'

History has thrown more than a few bad hands Armenia's way. It was trampled over by most of the ancient world's big players, then nearly wiped out altogether in the early years of the 20th century. The Soviet Union dropped in unasked and stayed for 70 years, bequeathing monumentally ugly buildings and a taste for grand military parades. Tensions with neighboring Azerbaijan flared in the early 1990s, and a continuing economic blockade has strained the economy, making fuel and some other commodities scarce. None of that has prevented Armenians from doing what they do best; celebrating their culture and enjoying their laid back lifestyle.
Facilities for travelers are few and far between, but then so are the queues. Yerevan's sidewalk cafes may not be exactly Parisian, but they are a great opportunity to get dressed up and spend an afternoon people watching. Get out of the cities and the countryside is astonishing; cloaked in wildflowers, framed by snowy mountains, pitted with deep caves and endowed with more than 40,000 ancient churches and monuments. One of the cradles of civilization, Armenia offers visitors a refreshing experience if they are prepared to occasionally pass on all the comforts of home.

ARMENIA: CULTURE IN THE YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE
Azat EGIAZARIAN Azat Egiazarian , D.Sc. (Philol.), professor, Director, Institute of Literature, Academy of Sciences of Armenia (Erevan, Armenia) Disintegration of the Soviet Union is a fact that cannot be described in simple or unambiguous terms. To my knowledge, there has yet been no work that could offer an objective and profound treatment of the subject. Emotional, one-sided assessments prevail, no matter positive or negative, which fail to reveal the true significance of the grandiose changes. I believe that we should pay attention to at least two circumstances. First, the event was sudden and revolutionary. We spent the years that have passed since then to talk about reforms—yet we lived through a revolution. No matter how strange this may seem, the early 1990s can be compared with 1917. In both cases the cardinal and revolutionary changes altered millions of lives of those who knew next to nothing of how to adjust to them. Market relations, the cult of private property and everything else connected with the new relations descended on people and created huge psychological problems for them. Poverty of the majority of population in the former Soviet republics made these problems an important part of people’s spiritual life.
