About Us ... Web site Map Elementary/Secondary Education In 1997 the Arkansas legislature required that education must produce academically competent students who can demonstrate their competency in a core curriculum and apply their knowledge and skills. Rigorous learning standards are defined in the Arkansas Curriculum Frameworks, disciple-based documents that clearly describe what students must master by grades 4, 8 and 12. Understanding that a child's academic foundation must be strong and solid, in 1998 Governor Mike Huckabee launched Smart Start, an initiative based on the premise that "all children will meet or exceed grade-level requirements in reading and mathematics by grade 4." A comprehensive plan for student achievement, Smart Start focuses on strong accountability with an emphasis on well-defined, high educational standards in reading and math.

    Preparing for College
Should my son or daughter go to college? Is a Bible college or vocational school more suitable? Is an apprenticeship in a trade an option? Should he get a GED if he is not going to college? How do I prepare him or her for life after high school? These and many other questions perplex home school parents as their children progress into the high school years. Many home school students will be prepared to start their own businesses or get a job after finishing high school. Some will learn a trade as they work with an experienced adult or perhaps attend a vocational school for one or two years. About half of home school graduates will choose to attend a private or state college to prepare for a profession. If you intend to attend a college, you should check early in the high school years with the particular colleges you may be interested in. Talent, achievement, leadership, extracurricular activities and community involvement are all a part of the student's qualifications, but a major factor will be test scores. Most colleges require a college entrance exam such as the ACT or SAT for acceptance, but scores required for acceptance or scholarships may vary. (See

    Preparing for a Vocation
If you do not plan to attend a four-year college, perhaps a two-year college would be more suitable. It affords a 2-Year or Associate's Degree in an area of study such as nursing, computer and electronics technology, physical therapy assistant, automotive tech, law enforcement programs, dental hygiene, machine tool technology, drafting, business, occupational therapy assistant, respiratory therapy, graphic arts, early childhood development, refrigeration/air conditioning/heating and many others. These colleges usually have a smaller student population, smaller class sizes, a good support network for students and lower tuition than that of a 4-year institution. Before enrolling in a 2-year college, contact the admissions officers for several institutions and ask for information to be mailed to you about the college. Start on this project in the junior year of high school to allow time to consider your options. Prepare a high school transcript of the courses you have studied, all other extra-curricular activities and community service involvement and your ACT score if you have taken it. Sample transcripts are shown in a number of home school reference books. Network with other home schoolers and find out who has blazed the trail before you. Besides 2-year colleges and technical schools, there are many other types of schools such as beauty, construction, therapeutic massage, truck driver training, plumbing, decorating, taxidermy, electrical, travel agent, and paralegal. Check your telephone book yellow pages under "schools" for a listing.

Things to consider before you enroll in a private vocational school:
Is the school promising you a job when you graduate?
It is against the law for private vocational schools to use any business name, logo or insignia that is designed to be deceptive and mislead potential students about affiliations the school might have. Did you answer an employment agency ad for a job and found you were really calling a school?
Is a course necessary to get a job?
Check the newspaper to see who is offering the jobs you want. Call the human resources departments of some of the companies and ask if you really need a course. How are you going to pay for the course?
Depending on which type of loan you get, you may have to start repaying the loan as soon as you finish school.
It can take many years to pay back the loan, depending on the cost of the course and how high the interest rate is.
Unlike many other types of loans or debts, school loans are very difficult to discharge in bankruptcy.
