The Library Media Center at Van Buren High School is centrally located and sports a Pointer Green color scheme. The Grace Barlow Scholastic Library is designed to meet the needs of the students and staff of Van Buren High School. The twelve station Research Center makes available a variety of research tools for the inquisitive mind: World Book online, Ebsco periodical database, word processing, Internet access, and much more. The library is accessible to students and staff before and after school while remaining open during the entire school day, Encore and both lunches.

Map: Web Pages Top of Page School Background Top of Page Marion High School, grades 10-12, is located on a two-acre campus just south of the town itself and adjacent to Interstate 55. This campus contains a total of thirty-seven classrooms housed in seven buildings. A separate shop for building and trades activities lies just southeast of the campus near the district's bus complex. Immediately east of the campus are sports facilities for football and track. The main building, completed in 1970 and first occupied in 1971, houses the following: sixteen classrooms; a suite of rooms for home economics (one classroom, a living room, a kitchen/activity room); one media center; one faculty lounge/workroom; a suite of offices for counselors; four student restrooms; administrative offices for the principal, vice-principals, secretaries and a nurse; and a reception area for visitors. During the summer of 1998 the main building experienced a renovation project to completely replace HVAC, lighting, and dropped ceiling systems.

Mission : The goal of the J.J. Izard Media Center is to provide the resources and encouragement for students to become lifetime readers and assist the students in reaching their full academic potential.
Description : The J.J. Izard Media Center offers a wide variety of books and audio-visual materials to support and enhance the curriculum.
Students, teachers and parents have access to over 9,000 items in the media center. There are twelve multimedia computers available for Accelerated Reader testing, Internet access, Encarta Encyclopedia and World Book on-line research, as well as educational software.
The Winnebago automated library management program is used for circulation and on-line catalog searches. Additional curriculum support materials are available for the staff from the Western Arkansas Educational Service Cooperative. The Coop provides a weekly delivery of requested items to the school each Thursday .
Special Reading Program : The Accelerated Reader program is an integral part of the school curriculum for second, third and fourth grades students. The S.T.A.R. Reading Test is administered quarterly to evaluate the reading progress that has been made by the students participating in the Accelerated Reader program. Students are recognized and rewarded with certificates and incentives for reaching specific AR point levels throughout the school year. The Van Buren Public Library designated J.J. Izard as an Accelerated Reader partner. Grant money obtained by the Van Buren Public Library was used to purchase books from the J.J. Izard Accelerated Reading list. Students visiting the public library may checkout AR books to read and later take the quiz at school.

Computer Card Catalog is an index to books. Non-fiction books cover a variety of topics. If you do not find a book listed for your topic, then search for a related topic. Proquest Searchware contains abstracts and indexing to articles from 60 general reference publications plus the New York Times Current Events Edition. Full text articles are provided for nearly 50 of the general reference publications. The database features abstracts and indexing back to 1986 for most publications. Full text coverage begins in 1992. Internet is a world-wide computer network is composed of thousands of smaller computer networks. The Search Engines on the World Wide Web are useful tools for accessing information on a variety of topics.

  • The media center uses an automated program, Winnebago Spectrum, for circulation of all types of books, educational materials and equipment. Books may be checked out for 2 week periods and rechecked as needed. A fine of .05 per school day is assessed on overdue books. Reference books and periodicals do not circulate outside the library. Books and materials are selected to meet the curriculum needs and interests of our students and staff. Six computer stations with Internet access and Microsoft Office are also available for student use.

About the Library
The Lavaca Elementary Media Center is a child friendly environment that encourages reading, learning, and the use of technology. The library has nine computers for student use and two for circulation and management purposes. The library currently has approximately 7,200 print holdings. In addition, approximately 500 other holdings include videos, CDs, Cassette Tapes, and other audio visual equipment. The library also has electronic services such as World Book Online, and Ebsco (a magazine and newspapers article database). These services are provided for participating libraries through the Arkansas State Library Traveler Project. An Internet Filter is also in place on all school computers.
