GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS)

Geographic Information Systems
What is a GIS?
Maps are part of our daily lives. We may consult a road map before driving to an unknown meeting location in the Research Triangle Park or a world map to compare the size of Arkansas and Ireland. Maps are also valuable research tools. A biologist may consult a topographic map to identify estuaries along the North Carolina coast and a demographer may refer to a census map showing the metropolitan statistical areas in the Midwest. What do these different maps have in common? Traditionally, they are in paper format, represent a single subject, and may become outdated quickly as statistics, geographical boundaries, or cultural features change. A solution to the limitation of traditional maps has emerged a Geographic Information System (GIS). A GIS links data to geography and brings a representation (a model) of the world to a desktop computer. A user can then customize and display information in map form which facilitates decision making. Through GIS, libraries and researchers have an exciting tool for analyzing geographically-referenced information. Current uses of GIS technology include land use planning, research marketing, resource management, demographic analysis, and education. Recent GIS applications include:

Welcome to the Richard C. Butler Center for Arkansas Studies The Richard C. Butler Center for Arkansas Studies proudly presents what we hope will one day become the premier online resource for historical information related to the State of Arkansas. The Butler Center for Arkansas Studies exists to promote the study of Arkansas history and related disciplines. The Butler Center rests solidly on the premise that we must know our state, its cities and people, and its history. When we know our communityits people and place, its buildings and businesseswe are well informed to make careful decisions and take care of that community. Every citizen has a responsibility to help take care of the community in which we live. By carefully preserving and making available the history of Arkansas, Little Rock, and our larger region, the Butler Center helps prepare all Arkansans for full citizenship. One of the Butler Center's major goals is to assist teachers of Arkansas history in the important endeavor of educating students about their state's history. An example of this assistance is the lesson plan project, undertaken in cooperation with the Arkansas Community Foundation and the Arkansas Humanities Council. By using technology, the Butler Center is able to share with Arkansas history teachers throughout the state the creativity and teaching skills of their colleagues. We appreciate the efforts of the teachers who contributed plans to this project and welcome the plans we hope that will be sent to us by teachers in this area of instruction.

Migrants from the southern Appalachians settled the forested Ozark Plateau and Ouachita Mountains in the early 19th century. Meanwhile, rich black soils along the Mississippi River attracted cotton planters to the east and south. Arkansas now leads the nation in rice and broiler chickens and ranks high in soybeans and sorghum. No other place in the world produces more bromine. Hot Springs National Park and the scenic Ozarks attract a growing number of visitors. Text source: National Geographic Atlas of the World, Seventh Edition, Area
