AR-KS-MO Regional National Map Project
This project provides a fundamental building block for The National Map : multi-State data. The compelling achievement stitches together different geospatial data residing on servers in Arkansas, Kansas and Missouri. The data are from different sources, based upon different schemas, but will be styled in such a way that information will appear as though its all one source. The achievement will eliminate a common barrier found in many approaches in solving geographic problems where the data ends at the State borders. Scientists and researchers in Missouri and Arkansas will be able to use geographic data together to study water quality in the famed White River watershed. The same could be said for economic and business developers in southeastern Kansas and southwestern Missouri exploring ways to spark rural economies using geographic information from both sides of the State line.
Previous The National Map Partnership Projects have approached other technical challenges in implementing The National Map . This pilot however, is the first of its kind to involve statewide geographic databases from three different States. While the effort is a major technical challenge, it could not have been accomplished without the strong bond between geographic administrators and decisionmakers in these States. Each of the three States are active participants in a multi-State consortium known as the

Abbreviation:
AR The early French explorers of the state gave it its name, which is probably a phonetic spelling for the French word for "downriver" people, a reference to the Quapaw Indians and the river along which they settled. Arkansas, which joined the Union in 1836, was the 25th state. Arkansas' early economy was largely one of agriculture, with cotton as the main cash crop. Sawmilling was the earliest industry. Cotton and lumber are still important, but they no longer dominate the economy. Today, Arkansas' manufacturing income exceeds its agricultural income, but the state's basic wealth is still in its farms, forests, and mines.
Arkansas is a beautiful land of mountains and valleys, thick forests and fertile plains. The Ozark and Ouachita mountain ranges in northern and western Arkansas are known as the Highlands; the southern and eastern parts of Arkansas are called the Lowlands. Tourists enjoy the state's natural beauty, its many recreational facilities and its historic sites. Arkansas' mineral and hot spring waters are well-known.

Sarah Breshears, Director, Arkansas State Data Center, University of Arkansas at Little Rock As commercially applied, "geodemography" broadly refers to the practice of qualifying populations within specified geographic boundaries by demographic and economic characteristics which are predictive of the consumption of goods and services. This session focused on how various companies and institutions are using geodemography and how the census geography products contribute to commercial product development. Ken Hodges from Claritas Corporation provided the viewpoint from the private sector. The new census geographies, data and products will provide many challenges for the private sector. In terms of the geographic issues, they will be unable to plug the new data into their current products because of the new geographies. For the first year, most commercial products will be using the 1990 geography and will need to convert data back to that old geography. They will also need to bridge the 1990 definitions to 2000 so that they can do trend analysis. Hodges also raised the question of whether the commercial providers will use the adjusted or unadjusted figures in their products.

The heart of geography, and even the source of its name is the map—a picture of the world which organizes our understanding of places. Manipulating a map, assembling it, is the best way to learn where features are, and how near or far they are to each other. The map is a framework that brings other knowledge together and makes the world understandable.
