Chapter Geography The geographical area served by the Arkansas Valley Audubon Society consists of that part of Colorado along the Arkansas River from its headwaters near Leadville to Holly at the Kansas border then south to New Mexico and west to the western edge of the San Luis Valley. Ours is a region of over 20,000 square miles. This huge, sparsely populated area contains a great variety of habitat. The eastern plains are mostly semi-arid short grass prairie with the notable exception of the Arkansas River riparian corridor. The area along the New Mexican border east of Trinidad is a unique combination of mesas and high grasslands. The western third of our area is mountainous, with some of the most spectacular scenery and wildlife habitat in Colorado. The Sangre de Cristo range for example contains several 14,000-foot peaks and some of the most diverse plant life in the entire Rocky Mountain system.

Chapter 11 - Using the Geography Wizard
Selecting Geography is available in some of the DataSets in TheDataWeb for DataFerrett. You will need to select a geography for the Decennial DataSets and this chapter will be devoted to examples and steps for the Summary File 3 DataSet. If you double click to select the Decennial Summary File 3 - 2000 - SF3 Georgraphy this Topics window pops up. For this example the following shows that the topic selected was "Selectable Geographies" and has returned the following variable [Geography Items] which has been highlighted. Double click on the highlighted variable. As you can see below there are several options that pop up in the Browse/Select Georgraphies GeoWizard. The FIPS State Code can be selected and the list of states will be avabilable. For this example we want to go a little lower down in the hierarchy and select the counties in a state. Select Geography Unit: FIPS County Code then click Next > . The GeoWizard now wants to know what FIPS State you are going to want the counties from. Select the FIPS State Code and click Next > .

Click arrow to choose REGIONS Y ou can understand Arkansas, its people and its settlements, by studying the landscape and geography. About 400 million years ago, Arkansas was under the ocean during the Paleozoic Era. Rock, known as limestone, was created when the creatures living in the water died and accumulated on the bottom of the oceans. Limestone is found in northern Arkansas. In western Arkansas, sandstone and shale were laid down, also remnants of the Paleozoic Era. Also during this era, the plateaus of the Ozark Mountains were formed, as well as the long ridges of the Ouachita Mountains. At the time dinosaurs roamed the earth during the Mesozoic Era, eastern and south Arkansas were under the waters of what would be the Gulf of Mexico. This was 130 million years ago. The Gulf of Mexico withdrew from Arkansas about 50 million years ago during the Cenozoic Era and left behind sand and gravel that is common in south Arkansas today. Today, the geography of Arkansas can be divided into the uplands and the lowlands. The uplands have mountains and are rocky while the lowlands are hilly in some places and low, flat and wet in other places. The soil is sandy and there are many rivers. Each supports many different plants and animals, farming, scenery and recreational opportunities.

FEATURE The Expanding Role of Location By Kelli Wiseth Two hundred years ago, when the vast wilderness referred to in U.S. history books as the "Louisiana Purchase" was acquired from France, the size of the United States effectively doubled overnight. According to Carolyn Walton, executive CIO for the state of Arkansas, "the surveying, charting, and mapping all began in Arkansas. And we're proud of the role our state played in the early days of mapping new territories." With its GeoStor data warehouse, Arkansas is again leading the way into uncharted territory, as the first state to have an enterprise-class system available via the internet for anyone in the world to use for accessing information about Arkansas. GeoStor GeoStor is a publicly accessible, enterprise-class geospatial information system that is operated for the state of Arkansas by the Arkansas Geographic Information Office (AGIO), a unit of the state's Executive Chief Information Office. Key collaborators in this project include the University of Arkansas' Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies (CAST), which implemented the system and supports an array of research and other projects using this system, as well as United States' federal agencies, including the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC), a 19-member interagency committee composed of representatives from the Executive Office of the President and Cabinet-level and independent agencies. GeoStor serves as a single source of geospatial data for many state and local agencies and the public, increasing efficiency and ease of access and reducing redundancy.
