Arkansas Avenue students receive one-on-one
counseling to help them succeed after leaving the program.
Principal: Terry Bachus
Gateway Alternative Program
The Arkansas Avenue Gateway Alternative program serves regular and special education students in sixth through twelfth grades who have not responded to building level intervention efforts and who continue to demonstrate chronic disruptive social behaviors, which interfere with their education and that of other students. The program serves students who show evidence of understanding appropriate social behavior but who have made a poor choice or a mistake, which poses a threat to self or others in a regular school setting. Placement occurs through a suspension/expulsion hearing, when a hearing officer recommends an extended suspension or expulsion for the student and an assessment for placement in the Gateway program. Parents cannot place students directly into the program, nor can they request placement; it is the decision of the hearing officer.
Alternative Educational Setting Program
This program is for special education student who have created challenges for themselves or others at their base school. This program serves sixth through twelfth grade students who are identified as needing special education services but cannot attend their base school due to behavior or disciplinary reasons. The Special Education Division makes all placements into this program, parents do not have the option to place their child into this program.

For Grandparents and Special Others Raising Children ARKANSAS
Grandparents and Other Relatives Raising Children A State Fact Sheet August 2002 Across the country, more than six million children approximately 1 in 12 children are living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. Arkansas has more than 62,000 children living in households headed by grandparents or other relatives. In many of these households, grandparents and other relatives are the primary caregivers (“kinship caregivers”) for children whose parents cannot or will not care for them due to substance abuse, illness and death, abuse and neglect, economic hardship, incarceration, divorce, domestic violence, and other family and community crises. In response to the growing numbers of these kinship care families, state legislatures, public and private agencies, and grassroots coalitions in Arkansas and across the country have begun to expand services and supports for children living with kin inside and outside of the foster care system. A Look at the Numbers: Kinship Care in Arkansas The data below show the numbers of grandparents who are living in households with at least one grandchild under the age of 18, as well as the numbers of grandparents who are the primary caregivers for these grandchildren. These numbers were reported by the 2000 U.S. Census and are available for every place (as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau) in the country, including cities, towns, villages, and boroughs, on the U.S. Census website.*

arkansas Better Chance (ABC) program provides funds for structured preschool education, Munsell said. some is Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool
http://www.thedailycitizen.com/articles/2004/05/03/news/news01.txt
Funding could aid area preschool programs By James Jennings The Daily Citizen "Arkansas Better Chance (ABC) program provides funds for structured preschool education," Munsell said. "You might see ABC in a public district or through a private provider." The money will also go toward expanding the income guidelines for eligible families. Munsell said the some additional funds will be used to enlist and enroll more ABC providers. DHS is currently working on prioritizing where the money should go. "Most of it will go to areas that demonstrate the greatest need for resources," Munsell explained. "It's geared toward the highest level of poor communities with the fewest resources." Although White County has many resources, some area programs may still see some expansion with the additional state money. One local program which may see some is Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY). The home-based program is funded by federal grants as well as state ABC grants. "Parents are taught how to teach their children at home," said Marjorie Ryan, the Searcy HIPPY coordinator. "If you have a parent who really wants to keep their child at home, this is something that a parent can do to get their children school-ready."
