Making the built environment more accommodating to wheels is very important when you live every day life in a wheelchair. Here are some commercial product resources to help you identify ideas and products. Don't forget to use the non-commercial information resources in the Community Living Section of WheelchairNet to learn more about each of these topics.
Dimensions for Wheelchairs
  • A rule of thumb for estimating the width of a doorway or space a wheelchair will need: add 7-9" (for the wheels and hubs) to the seat width of the wheelchair. Therefore, a 16" wide wheelchair would need a minimum of 23" inches to squeeze through. You need to add more inches to allow for hands and knuckles. An extra 2" can be gained in the doorway by changing the door hinges to the offset type

This comprehensive directory includes names, addresses and telephone numbers of over 1,300 national organizations that might be able to offer assistance with many of the problems you or your family are facing. Many can offer assistance directly- others will refer you to local agencies or support groups. I am confident that they can give you very good information and guidance to help solve your concerns. Many of the listings are non profit organizations but some are "for profit" entities. Regardless of the type, always be sure to ask a lot of detailed questions and do a lot of research before proceeding with any course of action- and particularly before sending any money. Request printed material first- most have detailed brochures that will explain their many functions. This will be particularly true of the governmental agencies. Naturally, no guarantee is made regarding the competency or accuracy of any organization's ability in solving a specific problem. Note that some listings are identified by "American" such as the American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Association. But be sure to check the main headings under "Cancer", "Diabetes", etc. where there are more listings on the subject.

One of the major issues addressed by the legislation is the quality of teachers for children with special needs. IDEA ’97 requires students receiving special education services to be educated with their non-disabled peers to the “maximum extent practicable.” As a result, according to a 2001 report from the Study of Personnel Needs in Special Education, 75% of students receiving special education services spend 40% or more of their day in general education classrooms. Consequently, 96% of general education teachers currently teach, or have in the past taught, children with special needs.
Teacher Preparation and Certification
Special Education Training for General Education Teachers
How have states responded to the challenge to prepare general education teachers to meet the needs of students with special needs? According to ECS’ Teacher Preparation Policy Database (http://www.tqsource.org/prep/policy/), 46 states and the District of Columbia currently have statutes or regulations requiring teacher education programs to provide some instruction on teaching children with special needs to individuals seeking initial training in elementary or secondary education. The amount and content of this instruction, however, varies dramatically.

Summary of State and Local Justice Initiatives
THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS: Domestic Abuse, Aids, the Disabled, the Elderly, the Homeless, etc. Numerous courts and bars have developed programs for groups such as the elderly, the disabled and the homeless. The programs and projects developed includea symposium on legal services for AIDS victims, legal services for the homeless and a domestic violence legal helpline. Advocacy for these groups is crucial as their special needs are often exacerbated by moderate to low income resources, thus further limiting access to justice and fairness in the areas of employment, housing, etc. The Georgia Bar Association Young Lawyers Division Advocates for Special Needs Children Committee sees that school districts are providing the education required by the Americans with Disabilities Act. A video addressing domestic violence from the perspective of teenagers titled, "He Loves Me…Not," was shown on the Arkansas Educational Television Network in May 1999. This video is a project of the Youth Education Committee of the Arkansas Bar Association. In addition to airing on TV, the video is made available to schools, churches and community organizations throughout the state.

DALLAS, Texas (AP) By the time students in Norfolk, Virginia, see special education teacher Charlene Christopher, they're usually in fourth grade. Most haven't learned to read very well. And there lie two of the problems inherent in the nation's special education programs, according to a report requested by President Bush released this week. The report recommends that schools help very young students before they need expensive special services. The current system, it says, "uses an antiquated model that waits for a child to fail." The report also says more emphasis needs to be placed on reading. It doesn't answer advocates' calls for guaranteed funding of special education programs, worrying educators who say public schools need millions more in funding each year for new teachers, better training and equipment. Christopher said smaller class sizes in kindergarten through third grade are important to keeping students out of special education.
