Window Media 9 Series in Education
Window Media 9 Series in Education
Microsoft's new end-to-end digital media platform gives schools and institutions the ability to improve the student experience through higher quality audio and video delivered with lower bandwidth requirements. Here are just a few of the benefits with Windows Media 9 Series:
  • Buffering is virtually eliminated and users can speed up or slow down content playback, allowing students to quickly browse libraries of content.
  • Audio and video is optimized at any connection speed, so students are assured the best experience even at dial-up rates.
  • Server-side playlists enable campus Intranet TV producers to dynamically change streaming content on the fly.
These are but a few of the many new features that will empower educators and instructional designers to expand and enhance teaching and learning.

Watch Sample Student Content learning how to use new software and devices for staff and teachers. Students benefit from receiving enhanced classroom instruction, and learn to create their own rich media content using Microsoft tools.
Situation
Deploying educational technology tools that will improve student outcomes and employee efficiency is the mission of PUSDs Department of Technology. Currently each classroom has a teacher workstation; the elementary schools include a K-6th grade technology lab and 7th-8th grade technology lab; and each high school is equipped with four to five technology labs. All desktops and labs are rich with software and devices.
To better utilize the tools available in labs and on workstations, the district needed to find a simple and cost-effective way to train teachers and staff to use new technologies. In addition to training, PUSD wanted to provide tools to teachers, students, and district staff that would facilitate the use of rich media in the classroom and community.
Solution
PUSD is using Microsoft Windows Media and Microsoft Producer for PowerPoint 2002 to provide on-demand instruction to teachers and staff. The Technology Products, Services and Training division, within the Information Management and Technology Department (IMT), is responsible for testing and deploying streaming media services as well as for providing technical training to district staff.

Arizona State University's Center for the Advancement of Small Business Presents "Families in Business Together: How to Have a Productive Family Argument”
“How to Have a Productive Family Argument,” - a seminar presented by the Family Business Forum at the W. P. Carey School of Business on Wednesday, May 26 - will feature Earl and Suzanne de Berge of Phoenix-based Behavior Research. The seminar was designed exclusively for family members who are in business together in order to help them strengthen and improve their working relationships. It will be facilitated by Dr. Robert Cottor and Sharon Cottor, M.S.W., of Cottor Associates, P.C., who are among the nation's leading experts in family business. The Family Business Forum is a program of the Center for the Advancement of Small Business (CASB) in the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. It was designed to bring together family businesses across generations to share ideas, explore new possibilities and plan for their success and survival. Behavior Research Center began investigating the small business sector in 1990 with its semi-annual BusinessTRACK™ study series. BusinessTRACK™ has demonstrated that companies with three to 100 employees are a vital segment of the economic picture, constituting roughly 95 percent of all commercial enterprises. Among these small businesses, from 75 to 80 percent are either wholly owned or controlled by family.

FBI raids Arizona schools
Brent Whiting/The Arizona Republic FBI special agent Susan Herskovits keeps watch. p2pnet.net News:- The entertainment industry has finally gone beyond the pale. Yesterday, under the new, Hollywood-inspired Intellectual Property Task Force, FBI agents raided schools in Arizona, looking for 'pirate' music and movie contraband. In what may have been part of a nation-wide action, "Agents poured through data and records at a computer command center for the Deer Valley School District in the northwest Valley and blocked the office from the public," says an Arizona Republic story here "It was among other places in Arizona and 'quite a few other states' where sealed search warrants were served, the FBI said." "FBI agents raided the Deer Valley district's Administration Services Center, just south of Deer Valley High School in Glendale, at 6 a.m. and stayed most of the day. The site houses the district's information services and technology offices, essentially the 'brains' of the district's computer system, said Timothy Tait, district spokesman."

Gateway Inc.'s FMC-901 Family Room Media Center looks like a silver, high-end stereo system with neon-blue lights and a volume dial. Gateway The Gateway FMC-901 Family Room Media Center plugs into a TV to bring a full-bore PC into your living room.
But plug it into a television and you've got a full-bore personal computer in your living room. With a remote control, you can use Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Media Center operating system to pull up digital photo slide shows, MP3 music files, digital home movies and DVDs. You can also record and store TV programming as you would with a TiVo. You wouldn't want to use this computer to do your family's finances or browse the Web. The FMC-901 is for entertainment, and if you play with lots of digital photos and music, it's worth a look. The unit will fit on most living room shelves. Like most PCs, it has to keep cool, using a fan that produces a light humming noise.
