Elaina Norlin: University of Arizona Library, Tucson, AZ Bionic Librarian "With our profession struggling for respect, relevance, and a younger hipper image, we could use more role models like Elaina Norlin" Reading Elaina Norlin's resume you might wonder if her many talents include adding several extra hours to the day. In four short years as undergraduate librarian at the University of Arizona, she has worked the reference desk, conducted usability studies of the library's web page, created an online reference page, and worked on increasing her library's minority recruitment and retention and on improving the information literacy of minority students. In her spare time, she's been active in her university's Council on Diversity and has worked with national library associations on strategies for achieving diversity.

http://www.elearn.arizona.edu/wracamps/
On March 18, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order No. 9102, "Establishing the War Relocation Authority in the Executive Office of the President and Defining its Functions and Duties." This order created a civilian agency in the Office for Emergency Management to provide for the removal of persons or classes of people from designated areas as previously denoted under Executive Order No. 9066 . The Authority embarked on a rapid trajectory of planning and building 10 relocation camps that would house more than 110,000 Japanese Americans who lived chiefly inside the boundaries of Military District 1 along the Pacific Coast. A map shows how the WRA dispersed the camps across the western United States.
This Web exhibit features images from approximately forty photographs taken for the War Relocation Authority and vividly depicts life in Arizona's two camps. Follow the Camp Life link to view the images.

in excess of 20,000 letters, petitions and phone calls opposing thebill, and only 75 letters/calls supporting it. ABATE Library.
http://www.abate-of-maryland.org/xhelmets.htm
The following information has been reproduced with permission from "Pocket Guide to Helmet Facts" courtesy of Russ Brown. In 1966, the U.S. Dept. of Transportation threatened to withhold millions of dollars in highway funds from states failing to enact mandatory helmet laws. Every state except California complied. In 1976, Congress revoked DOT authority to impose fiscal sanctions against states that refuse to enforce helmet laws. Nearly half the states soon repealed their laws or amended them to exclude most adults. Currently, only 24 states require all riders to wear helmets. "In the ten years 1978 to 1988, motorcycle fatalities per 10,000 motorcycles declined 15%. Based on vehicle miles traveled, the fatality rate declined an astonishing 37% from 1980 through 1986. Motorcycling now has a rate declining more rapidly than any other group."
Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), 1990 Relative to the number of registered motorcycles, states with mandatory helmet laws had 12.5% more accidents and 2.3% more fatalities than free-choice states for the 14 year period 1977-90.
