Tutorials cover collection development policies, needs assessment, selection criteria, acquisition of materials, weeding, censorship issues, collection assessment, preservation and repair, and donated materials.
http://www.lib.az.us/cdt/
Collection Development Training (CDT) provides practical training in how to perform collection development activities in public libraries. Each activity is presented as a separate section with links to helpful Internet sites, lists of books and articles for further reading, and definitions of key terms. While this training may be useful to librarians in a variety of libraries, this site is intended primarily for librarians and other library staff working in Arizona's small and rural public libraries. CDT is sponsored by the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records. To enter click CDT below. After viewing the CDT information, PLEASE take our on line survey . This provides valuable information that will allow us to revise the CDT program accordingly.

Internet Resources Announcements
Based on the idea that visual images are a language, visual literacy can be defined as the ability to understand and produce visual messages. Work in the field has centered on development of educational programs that train students' abilities to evaluate and create visual messages, as well as improvement of students' reading and writing skills through the use of visual literacy techniques.
Visual literacy as a field of research, study, and teaching becomes increasingly important with the ever-expanding proliferation of mass media in society. As more and more information and entertainment is acquired through non-print media (such as television), the ability to think critically and visually about the images presented becomes a crucial skill.

Weeding (also known as deselection) is an essential, though difficult, element of collection development that ensures the library's materials are useful and accessible. Every library's print collection is limited by the space available to house it, and collections should change over time to reflect changes in the community and in the library's goals. Weeding is a periodic or continual evaluation of resources intended to remove items that are no longer useful from the collection.
This section discusses the importance of having a weeding policy, the rationale behind weeding, some reasons it is difficult to weed, practical information for use in planning or conducting weeding, and options for the materials you remove. When considering weeding in your library, keep in mind that every library is different; every library has unique priorities and problems. Not every suggestion or guideline for weeding in this section will fit your library, so feel free to adapt as necessary.

The x -kernel Protocol Framework
The x -kernel is an object-based framework for implementing network protocols. It defines an interface that protocols use to invoke operations on one another (i.e., to send a message to and receive a message from an adjacent protocol) and a collection of libraries for manipulating messages, participant addresses, events, associative memory tables (maps), threads, and so on. Over the last several years, the x -kernel has served as a research platform for investigating end-to-end issues related to computer networks. Broadly speaking, our work has focused on the implementation of network software running on the end systems connected to the network, and on the design of the protocols running on those systems. Our work is experimental in nature, meaning that we design, build, and measure systems. The x -kernel is also used in computer network courses to give students hands-on experience with network protocols. Information about a new textbook that uses the x -kernel to illustrate networking concepts- Computer Networks: A Systems Approach
Software
We currently distribute the x -kernel running on a variety of different platforms, as well as a wide collection of network protocols and other related software. To access more information on this software, see the following:

Resources for Library History Friends of the Library, The University of Arizona The University enrolled its first students in October 1891. The university library began as a collection of agriculture, mining, and engineering books housed in the office of Frank A. Gulley, dean of the school of agriculture. Most of the first one hundred accessions, including volumes of The American Cyclopaedia: A Popular Dictionary of General Knowledge (N.Y.: D. Appleton, 1883) still survive. By 1893 the library had grown to seven hundred volumes and had its first librarian, English professor Howard J. Hall. It moved to its own room in 1896 and relocated to its first freestanding building, constructed “to last for all time,” in 1904. Growing collections precipitated the move to a larger building in 1925 and that building expanded in 1963. A separate science engineering library was constructed in 1963 and then enlarged by the addition of two floors in 1971. The main library was relocated to its present structure in 1977, where it continues to build its collections to meet the needs of faculty and students. Today the University of Arizona Library holds no more than 4 million volumes and stands twenty-first in the Association of Research Libraries’ rankings for collection size.
