Arizona Libraries Explore New Models for Serving Seniors
As baby boomers have grown older, they have helped to shape and redefine many cultural norms and institutions. With retirement imminent for so many boomers, Libraries for the Future is pioneering a new library model to serve these seniors. LFF has partnered with Civic Ventures (CV), an organization that works to expand the contributions of of older Americans to society, to create the Life Options Libraries project, supported by funding from the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust. Based on the Life Options Center concept developed by Marc Freedman, founder and Executive Director of Civic Ventures, Life Options Libraries will help foster planning in Maricopa County, Arizona, and promote positive approaches to aging. Maricopa County (the Phoenix, Arizona, metropolitan area) is one region familiar with the impact of large numbers of seniors and retirees. As Freedman has documented in his book, Primetime: How Baby Boomers Will Revolutionize America , retirement communities such as Sun City, northwest of Phoenix, helped define retirement during the past 40 years. LFF and CV have chosen this rapidly growing county to pilot a project that looks at how seniors' needs can be meet in public spaces.

LIBRARIES FOR THE FUTURE TO EXPAND EQUALACCESS LIBRARIES PROGRAM IN ARIZONA
PHOENIX, AZ - October 6, 2003 Arizona public libraries will benefit from the expansion of EqualAccess Libraries , a program developed by Libraries for the Future (LFF) that transforms libraries into information and education centers, based on the needs of their communities. A three-year, $1.05 million challenge grant awarded to Libraries for the Future by the will establish a network of EqualAccess Libraries in 10 states. In each participating state, local matching funding is required to complement the grant. Arizona has been selected to participate thanks to support from the Qwest Foundation and the
A ceremony announcing the EqualAccess Libraries initiative will take place on Thursday, October 9 at 10 a.m. at the Valencia Branch of the Tucson-Pima County Public Library in Tucson. Civic and corporate leaders, librarians and educators will gather to celebrate this exemplary public-private partnership.
"Arizona libraries are well-positioned to help citizens use technology for educational and economic benefit," said Kathryn McLaughlin, state director, Libraries for the Future. "There are exceptional library leaders in Arizona who are committed to ensuring that all residents are part of the information age. We're honored that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has recognized the importance of EqualAccess Libraries and delighted that the Qwest Foundation and State Library are partnering with us to enable Arizona libraries to further develop their capacity to meet the new and multiple needs of their communities."

Arizona State Board Reports Arizona Library Association Report, July 2003 ST-1 Teri Metros Arizona Library Budgets Decline: Public, university, and school libraries across the state are facing serious reductions in their operating budgets due to the decline in the economy. The Prescott Public Library has cut 10% from its FY 2004 operating budget and reduced its materials budget by 25% in order to avoid cutting personnel. The Glendale Public Library's budget was reduced by $447, 295 and the groundbreaking for their next branch was delayed by one year. The Flagstaff City-Coconino County Public Library lost one position and had a $50,000 reduction in its materials budget. The Phoenix Public Library lost 16.4 FTE positions and had a 9% budget reduction. As a result, public service hours at their facilities were reduced by nine hours a week and the materials budget was reduced. The University of Arizona libraries eliminated 22 professional and classified staff positions and an additional $100,000 in student wages. AzLA Regional Forum: With the assistance of the Yavapai County Library District, AzLA's 2003 Regional Forum was held in April at the historic Hassayampa Inn in Prescott. The theme for the day was Libraries and the USA Patriot Act: How Do We Respond? The daylong event provided Arizona librarians with the opportunity to learn more about the Act and discuss its implications for intellectual freedom and the preservation of civil liberties. The event featured an introductory presentation by Leah Sandwell-Weiss from the University of Arizona Law Library. This was followed by a very spirited panel discussion between Eleanor Eisenberg from the Arizona ACLU and Gail Thackerey from the Arizona Attorney General's Office.

Arizona State Board Reports Arizona Library Association Report, November 2003 ST-1
Submitted by Teri Metros, AzLA Representative to MPLA New Lobbyist for Arizona Library Association: As a result of the retirement of AzLA's long time and legendary lobbyist, Charlie Stevens, AzLA's Legislative Committee recently interviewed a number of lobbying firms to find a new lobbyist to represent the organization and be a voice for Arizona library issues within the state legislature. In September, the AzLA Executive Board selected the firm of Capital Consulting, LLC. AzLA has previous experience with Capital Consulting as that firm also handles AzLA's association management duties and helps plan the annual conference. AzLA Horner Fellowship: With the passing of Marian Horner, a long-time library supporter, in 2002, a large bequest was given in support of the AzLA Horner Fellowship. Mrs. Horner and her husband, the late Dr. Layton "Jack" Horner, established the fellowship in 1989 to foster cultural understanding and informational exchanges between Arizona and Japanese librarians. To date, the Fellowship has received $540,000, as well as a collection of memorabilia (scrolls and figurines) with an estimated value of $4,000. This year, AzLA Treasurer Carol Damaso worked with the Horner Committee to develop an investment strategy for the trust. The Committee has also been in contact with the Japan Library Association to plan for reciprocal visits by librarians from both Arizona and Japan. AzLA Service Award Winners Announced:
