The Center for Spatial Analysis and Remote Sensing CSARS
G EOGRAPHY at Cal State LA is a program offering opportunities for careers in many different fields. Geography is an ideal discipline for the individual who is interested in either the cultural or physical environment and who enjoys field work and research as well as travel. Geographers practice their knowledge and skills in a diversity of ways, ranging from researching urban or environmental issues to the use of computers and satellite imagery in designing and creating maps. The purpose of the Department of Geography and Urban Analysis is to provide a program within the physical and social sciences that can provide the necessary understanding and skills that will lead to a satisfying and rewarding career after graduation. Whether studying traditional human-land relationships, elements of the physical environment, or contemporary urban problems, the geographer strives towards understanding the complex interrelationships that are part of both the physical and cultural environments. Interpreting the cultural and physical patterns of the earth requires training in both observational and technical skills. The department offers specialized course work in such areas as cartography, computer cartography, computer applications in geography, geographic information systems (GIS), geomorphology, locational analysis, meteorology and climatology, field methods, map reading, air photo interpretation, and remote sensing. These form part of a degree program that offers both variety and specialization.

Arizona - Geography State in the southwestern United States. It is bordered by Utah (N), New Mexico (E), Mexico (S), and, across the Colorado R., Nevada and California (W). Northern Arizona lies on the Colorado Plateau, an area of dry plains more than 4,000 ft (1,220 m) high, with deep canyons, including the famous Grand Canyon carved by the Colorado River. Along the Little Colorado River, which runs northwest through the plateau to join the Colorado, are the Painted Desert, where erosion has left colorful layers of sediment exposed, and the Petrified Forest National Park, one of the world's most extensive areas of petrified wood. South of the Grand Canyon are the San Francisco Peaks, including Humphreys Peak, the highest point (12,655 ft/3,857 m) in the state. The southern edge of the Colorado Plateau is marked by an escarpment called Mogollon Rim. The southern half of the state has desert basins broken up by mountains with rocky peaks and extending NW to SE across central Arizona. To the south, the Gila River, a major tributary of the Colorado, flows west across the entire state. This area has desert plains separated by mountain chains running north and south; in the west the plains fall to the relatively low altitude of c.140 ft (43 m) in the region around Yuma.

et al , 1988). Figure 2 shows the distribution of mountains bounding the San Pedro Basin. The west boundary of the San Pedro Basin is marked by the Huachuca, Mustang, and Whetstone Mountains, as well as the Canelo Hills. The Tombstone Hills and Mule Mountains form the east border of the basin (Freethey, 1982). The basin fill slopes gently from south to north, resulting in a northward river flow direction. The floodplain gradient averages about 12 to 15 feet per mile (Freethey, 1982). Mountain altitudes range from 4,400 to 9,500 feet (ft.) above mean sea level (MSL) (Freethey, 1982), while valley floor elevations vary from about 4,800 feet near the headwaters in Mexico to 3,300 feet above MSL at the Narrows north of Benson (Putman, et al The mountains bordering the basin are composed of Precambrian to Tertiary crystalline granitic and metamorphic, volcanic, and consolidated sedimentary rock formations. These units form the structural basement of the basin and their upper surface may be as deep as 5,000 feet (Oppenheimer and Sumner, 1980). These units are generally of low permeability and porosity except where highly fractured. Wells in these units may yield a few gallons per minute (gpm), enough for domestic and livestock purposes (Vionnet and Maddock, 1994). Some springs in the Huachuca Mountains yield as much as several hundred gpm (Brown
