CWA and Arizona AAUP Help Build Faculty/Staff Coalition in State Community Colleges
By Sue Hemphill, Arizona State Organizer, CWA CWA's philosophy of being the "Community Minded Union" is a perfect fit for providing support to community college employees in Arizona. Last December, the Maricopa County Community Colleges District (MCCCD) Unified Crafts Association affiliated with CWA Local 7019, here in Phoenix, AZ. Local 7019 has worked closely with Phoenix area community organizations and been actively involved in municipal and state lobbying and electoral politics. And we've had a pretty good success record for more than fifty years. Our members sit on state government and industry commissions, and we are recognized as leaders and activists in the community. CWA offered exactly the kinds of community connections the Unified Crafts employees at Maricopa's ten community colleges wanted to increase their bargaining influence in meet-and-confer negotiations with their administration. "Meet-and-confer had been a pretty frustrating experience before we joined CWA," said Unified Crafts President Conrad Mills. "We knew we had to find a way to make our members' voices heard in order to reach our full potential to serve the students, the District, and the community." Conrad Mills and the Unified Crafts members knew that one of their best hopes for gaining the respect or at least the ear of MCCCD administration would be through developing an independent and direct line of communication to state legislators and the public. As our first priority after the affiliation, Local 7019 began plans to build an employee and community coalition that could deliver the kind of influence that United Crafts members needed.
