John Mazzeo
He received his doctorate in educational psychology with an emphasis in measurement and statistics from the University of Arizona. His master's degree, also from the University of Arizona, is in educational psychology, and his bachelor's degree in psychology is from State University of New York at Binghamton. Mazzeo is a coauthor of a number of major NAEP reports and research studies published by the National Center for Education Statistics. In addition to his NAEP work, his research interests include conventional and item-response theory equating and linking methods and statistical models for large-scale assessments. Throughout his tenure at ETS, he has been involved in research projects involving the above topics, as well as other areas (such as the comparability of scores from computerized and paper-and-pencil tests, equity issues in constructed-response testing, and test dimensionality analyses) and has published articles or presented papers on these topics at the annual meetings of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and National Council on Measurement in Education (NCME). He came to ETS in 1984 as an associate measurement statistician in the College Board Division. From 1984 through 1990, he was the primary coordinator of statistical work for the College Board's Advanced Placement Program

Letter from the Superintendent
Vernon E. Jacobs April 26, 2004 - As superintendent of the Glendale Union High School District, I support Governor Janet Napolitano's proposal for a statewide full-day kindergarten program. My responsibility is to oversee the education of students, grades 9 through 12, in nine public high schools and two alternative schools located in Glendale and Phoenix. I am sure that there are those who would wonder why a high school superintendent would become involved in pushing for such legislation. What could it possibly mean for us? Let me assure you that high school educators believe that early childhood education and intervention strategies are critical for the future success of students as they progress through the grades. Children must already have a solid foundation of life experiences and knowledge of the basics of reading, math and writing at the onset of formal schooling in the first grade. Without this foundation, young children are doomed to be perpetually 'behind' in their academic growth and will have reduced self-esteem that will carry into the secondary and adult years.

This 5-year epidemiologic study will help establish, for the first time, an accurate count of the number of Arizona children with autism. The investigators are members of the Department of Pediatrics and College of Public Health at the University of Arizona. The AASSP is a joint undertaking with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Arizona State Department of Education, and many other agencies and organizations that serve children with ASD and their families. This is a brief account of that experience.
    Ba c kground
The district encompasses approximately 15 square miles. The 7 schools in Madison employ 290 elementary teachers and serve approximately 5,000 elementary students. The schools have a variety of grades: PreK-2, PreK-4, grades 3-8, or grades 5-8. The student population is about 66% white, 21% Hispanic, 6% African-American, 5% Native American and 2% Asian. Approximately 10-15% of the students speak English as a second language and 43% of the students receive free or reduced-cost lunch. The school system had been using a traditional mathematics program and there had been very little professional development in mathematics.

(12.09.03) The National Staff Development Council has named Leading Every Day: 124 Actions for Effective Leadership the NSDC 2003 Outstanding Staff Development Book of the Year. Published by Corwin Press, Leading Every Day was coauthored by WestEd leadership experts Joyce Kaser, Susan Mundry, Katherine E. Stiles, and the late Susan Loucks-Horsley. The book was based on the curriculum of the National Academy for Science and Mathematics Education Leadership – an in-depth professional development experience for leaders of science and mathematics reform.
Presented each year, the NSDC Outstanding Staff Development Award recognizes a book that makes a significant and lasting contribution to the field of staff development. The book selected for this honor, presents research and/or recommendations that are viewed by practicing staff developers as both substantive and useful.
Leading Every Day is a “daybook” for administrators and teacher leaders that offers inspiration and opportunities for reflection in four, 31-day (or one-month) units. The book provides leaders with information in four areas to help them lead reform efforts in their schools, districts, or other organizations: everyday leadership, everyday change, leading learning, and leading effective groups. Each page of the book presents quotations, inspiring stories, and invitations for larger discourse designed to help veteran and aspiring leaders alike enhance their leadership practices, every day.
