Mazzeo is a coauthor of a number of major NAEP reports and research studies published by the National Center for Education Statistics. A Project of: The Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications Investigations Madison SD, AZ Printer Friendly Version Location: Phoenix, AZ Type: Urban Size: 7 elementary schools External Support: NSF Planning Grant In 1994, the Madison, AZ, School District, located in the central corridor of Phoenix, began a process to introduce standards-based mathematics instruction into its elementary schools. This is a brief account of that experience. Ba c kground The district encompasses approximately 15 square miles. The 7 schools in Madison employ 290 elementary teachers and serve approximately 5,000 elementary students. The schools have a variety of grades: PreK-2, PreK-4, grades 3-8, or grades 5-8. The student population is about 66% white, 21% Hispanic, 6% African-American, 5% Native American and 2% Asian. Approximately 10-15% of the students speak English as a second language and 43% of the students receive free or reduced-cost lunch. The school system had been using a traditional mathematics program and there had been very little professional development in mathematics.
