The state's genetics research consortium, meanwhile, will look for genetic roots of the growing disease in a first-of-its-kind study. The research project will be announced tonight at the annual fund-raising dinner of the Arizona chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. "We're thrilled, absolutely thrilled, because we think (the project) has amazing potential for people living with this disease," said Chris Uithoven, president of the society's Arizona chapter. The society is presenting its Hope Award to Jeff Trent, president and scientific director of the Translational Genomics Research Institute. Trent is expected to announce the genetic, or "biomarker," study after accepting the award.

    REVISED
A Guide to Native American Studies Programs
in the United States and Canada
    Robert M. Nelson, Editor
Ten years ago, in the Fall of 1993, the Association for the Study of American Literatures published a 30-page guide to Native American Studies programs in the U.S., compiled and edited by former ASAIL President Franchot Ballinger. This new Guide to Native American Studies Programs in the United States and Canada represents an attempt to update and expand upon Professor Ballinger's pioneering work. In accordance with a 1995 ASAIL resolution, it is being published both in hardcopy form and in electronic form, so as to be available not only to ASAIL members but also to non-members, compliments of the Association. I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge the invaluable assistance of two SAIL Editorial Assistants, Amy Davidson (1995-96) and Corrie Anderson (1996-97), who in addition to their other duties put in many hours of overtime gathering and regathering, collating and recollating information from a variety of sources including questionnaires, follow-up letters and phone calls, and worldwide websites. Thanks also to Karen Strom at University of Massachusetts, who read the final draft of this guide and provided or corrected many of the URL addresses for program websites. Our dream was to provide a comprehensive survey of U.S. and Canadian Native American Studies programs being offered as majors, minors, and certifications at the baccalaureate level or above, using (with some slight modifications and additions) Professor Ballinger's earlier categories of information on each program. And although we have made a considerable effort to locate, contact, and acquire information about Native American Studies programs (by whatever title: Native American Studies and American Indian Studies are the most common designations, though there are others) at all North American baccalaureate-granting institutions, readers should keep in mind that the

SCF provides workers’ compensation insurance and related services to more than 54,000 employers statewide — about 54 percent of the market share. As market conditions change and profits dwindle, other insurance companies will close up shop and leave Arizona, because it is not a profitable line of business for them anymore. SCF of Arizona, as always, will be here for the hard-working employers of Arizona.

Women's Studies, SIROW and WOSAC Celebrate the Past and Look to the Future This fall, three events honor the 25th, 20th and 15th anniversaries of women's studies, SIROW, and WOSAC respectively. On September 22, Generations of Women, a celebration attended by more than 100 people, offered memories and highlighted hopes for the future. Lovely panels represented the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and the 2000s. Audience members also contributed reminiscences and tributes. Speaking of the founding years, Myra Dinnerstein and Eliana Rivero recounted the program's humble beginnings, from a filing box, rotating desk and a few yellow pads, to establishment of a small office in the mathematics building where the big issue became access to a bathroom for women. Emerita Professor, Billie Jo Inman , told of the challenges of getting colleagues in the English department to approve a women's literature course, and their surprise that more than one might be offered. All celebrated that Women's Studies had not fulfilled prophesies that is was a temporary fad, but rather that it had thrived to develop into a department, a major, and a graduate program. Speaking for the 1980s
