Special to the Times WINDOW ROCK - A recent study that indicates that attending boarding school may be a contributing factor to the high alcohol abuse rate on the Navajo Reservation doesn't surprise Raymond Daw. "I've been seeing that for years," he said. Daw is the director of the Na'Nizhoozhi Center in Gallup which provides detox services for some 18,000 people, mostly Navajos, who are picked up each year in the streets of Gallup and put into protective custody. The study, which was published in the September issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, says that Native American children who were abused or attended boarding school are more likely to have problems with alcohol as adults.

The Arizona vote, which mandates English-only instruction for those who do not speak English, comes two years after a similar referendum in California. Both were spearheaded and financed by Silicon Valley millionaire Ron Unz, who has pledged to take his campaign to other states. Unless lessons are learned from Arizona and California, Unz will likely have more successes. What's troublesome is that Unz obviously learns. As explained in James Crawford's article on page 3, Unz crafted the Arizona ballot initiative so that it plugs some of the loop holes in the California law that allow many students to continue to receive bilingual education. One can assume that his next initiative, which will probably be in Colorado, will be even more restrictive. Off-reservation boarding schools were considered by many government and boarding school officials to be major successes in forcing Native American children to adopt the ways of white "civilization" and simultaneously to abandon their own Native traditions. Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, was a school of this type, as was Sherman Institute in Riverside, California. Native children were originally brought to Carlisle as hostages to insure that their parents would not continue armed resistance against the United States Army. However, many of the first Carlisle students became ill from diseases, such as tuberculosis, and died in the school's opening years. This may be a reason for Carlisle President Richard H. Pratt's letter to a physician in 1884, requesting help in selecting "healthy children" for the school from Indian reservations in the West. This letter is displayed here. In addition to providing medical treatment to its students, Carlisle Indian School Hospital also functioned as a preliminary nurse training facility, preparing Native American women to move on to regular nursing schools, as the souvenir album here shows.

"Indian people are human beings, too, as well as being Americans," Lomawaima says. "Americans should know their own history. If we can’t face the mistakes of our past, how can we possibly address the challenges of the present and future?" Lomawaima’s talk and other local community appearances are scheduled in conjunction with the current exhibition at the UO Museum of Natural History, "They Sacrificed for Our Survival: The Indian Boarding School Experience," which continues through Dec. 23. In addition, November is American Indian and Alaskan Native Heritage Month.

Native American children have long been subject to removal from their homes for placement in residential schools and, more recently, in foster or adoptive homes. The governments of both the United States and Canada, having reduced Native nations to the legal status of dependent children, historically have asserted a surrogate parentalism over Native children themselves. Children of the Dragonfly Invoking the dragonfly spirit of Zuni legend who helps children restore a way of life that has been taken from them, the anthology explores the breadth of the conflict about Native childhood. Included are works of contemporary authors Sherman Alexie, Joy Harjo, Luci Tapahonso, and others; classic writers Zitkala-Sa and E. Pauline Johnson; and contributions from twenty important new writers as well. They take readers from the boarding school movement of the 1870s to the Sixties Scoop in Canada and the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978 in the United States. They also spotlight the tragic consequences of racist practices such as the suppression of Indian identity in government schools and the campaign against Indian childbearing through involuntary sterilization.

    Nazlini Boarding School:
    Reaching out to other cultures
Believing that "secure personal knowledge has to come before knowledge of others," the Nazlini Boarding School began incorporating Navajo culture into its curriculum in the mid 1980s. Well on their way to creating a school supportive of the local culture, those at Nazlini were interested in the opportunities for cross-cultural experiences offered through the EMPIRE project. Sitting at the bottom of the Nazlini Canyon in Arizona, Nazlini Boarding School is a rural boarding and community school administered by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. All of the school's 134 students are Navajo. Thirty-four of the students board at the school and are picked up by their parents for weekend visits home. The rest of the students come by bus or walk from the nearby community. The Nazlini community is physically remote and isolated. Unemployment and underemployment are chronic in the Nazlini area. Tribal related work, farming, and ranching are the main sources of employment. The school has two specialized programs within its base curriculum: the Nazlini Integrated Language/Arts program and the Nazlini Cross Cultural Exchange Program. The language arts program incorporates aspects of the past and present community into the curriculum, using community people as resources and including local stories, geography and traditions in classes. Through a foster grandparent program, for example, a local grandmother teaches students traditional Navajo ways.

    DeMiguel Elementary School:
Learning about other ways of life
Spacious and flooded with natural light, DeMiguel Elementary School is the newest K-6 school within the Flagstaff Public School District. Although Flagstaff is rich in ethnic diversity, DeMiguel's student body does not reflect that diversity. The ethnic composition of DeMiguel is 85% Anglo, 7% Hispanic, 6% Native American, 1% African American, and 1% Asian. Prior to involvement in EMPIRE, exploration of multicultural practices, other than at the second and third grades, had been rather "scattershot, with most teachers doing their own thing." The EMPIRE project appealed to the DeMiguel staff because it offered an opportunity to improve staff and student understanding of cultural diversity. As one EMPIRE team member explained in the district newsletter, "Because our school population does not include many people of different cultures, we need to create opportunities for our kids to learn about other ways of life, the differences as well as the commonalities." The EMPIRE project's broad framework was also initially attractive to the DeMiguel staff, because it permitted them to develop their own school plan. The DeMiguel team came to a define multicultural practices "as those behaviors, relationships, attitudes and values which define and are demonstrate by identifiable cultural groups. Their manifestations vary (food, clothing, language, artifacts, etc) but they respond to common human needs, felt by children and adults everywhere."

St. Michaels was named after a Catholic Saint (Saint Michael) from the convent name (St. Michaels Convent) that exists at the site. In the 1850s, the hillside near the Sisters at St. Michaels was the scene of a planned ambush by the Mexicans on the Navajos, frustrated by Tall Syphlis of the Diné Ana’ih (Enemy Navajos), who accompanied the Mexicans from Cebolleta. While the Navajos and Mexicans were making arrangements to exchange slaves, the Mexicans planted a cannon in a hidden spot, planning to fire it into the Navajos when they were all assembled.
