Alternative School Program Standards The Background: Tennessee Code Annotated Section 49-6-4017(f)(2) requires that "The State Board of Education shall provide a curriculum for alternative schools to ensure students receive specialized attention needed to effectively reform students to prevent them from being repeat offenders." The Alternative School Program Standards provide a framework for local school systems to use in developing curriculum to meet the needs of the students. The standards define an alternative school environment with curricula, counseling, and resources to enable the student to master life skills that are critical to social, emotional, and academic growth and success. The standards were developed by a broad-based committee that also developed the service learning curriculum standards. The draft was circulated statewide for comments. ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL PROGRAM STANDARDS The Alternative School Program Standards provide a framework for local school systems to use in developing curriculum to meet the needs of the students. MISSION The mission of the Alternative School is to intervene positively with students who currently are not succeeding in a traditional school environment.

This provides a detailed review of how school construction decisions — whether to renovate existing buildings or build new, greenfield facilities — are made in Michigan and their effect on development patterns. The report aims to help school officials, community leaders, homeowners, and parents evaluate the full cost of new school construction or renovation. It recommends changes in state policy that, if implemented, will capture the economic and cultural benefits of renovating older schools or building new ones in town. 20p. Articulated learning I learned that some of the Tuba City High School students I had the privilege of tutoring were faster learners than others when it came to learning new concepts. As a result, some students were referred to as “Gifted students,” while those who had a hard time learning new materials were called, “Special ed.” I learned this by attending several classes that the 8th grade students of Tuba City High School attended. In a number of these classes, especially, mathematics and science, most of the questions asked by the teachers were answered by this particular set of students known to their colleagues as the “gifted students.” This learning matters because in most High schools, including Tuba City High school, these particular students known as the “gifted students” are usually grouped into special classes. This, although unintended, alienates these gifted students from the rest of their colleagues. At Tuba City High school, I realized this separation led to an unspoken resentment towards the ‘gifted students.’ Moreover, whenever these gifted students happened to attend the same class with other students, the other students were always quiet and timid, knowing that the ‘smart ones’ – as they were called by fellow students – will always answer. This didn’t help their learning in any way. However, that’s besides the point I intend to stress. My dilemma is why in the first place do we have to categorize some students as gifted and others as requiring special education?

The Alternative Spring Break trip to the Navajo Nation in Arizona was a profound experience. I did so many things that I had never done in my life. Including but not limited to: flying in an airplane, hiking, tutoring elementary children, ambulance ride/going to the ER, major league baseball game, seeing real dinosaur evidence in person, meeting a Britney Spears fanatic, eating lamb, staying in hostels, watching TV and using the Internet for less than 30 minutes in one week, eating healthy, traveling for more than three days without a member of my family present. In my Technology and Values class, MDS214Q, we have discussed natural resources and ethical issues of moderization. Tuba City itself was quite run down and some residences did not even have running water. Health care was also an issue there, there was a big dialysis center, but other amenities like pharmacies and a veterinary clinic were not present. At the Lake Powell dam in Page, Arizona I learned that the hydroelectric power generated there as well as the water goes around Tuba City to the more prosperous cities in vicinity. There were instances during the trip when I thought, "hey, that's not fair." I inferred from my surroundings and from the speakers that a culture can only survive through its people. Also, learning to respect each other's differences would eliminate discrimination and prejudice that a lot of people face.
