The extreme geographical contrasts ranging from mountains to prairies, jungles to deserts and everything in between makes it the perfect host for all types of edible flora and fauna. Add to this the mix of peoples from both South American and various European stock and you get a veritable culinary detonation unlike that of its neighbouring countries. Ancient Times and Influences Argentina's political history is somewhat complicated. It is relatively young, only coming into being as an independent country in the early 19th Century. However as with most countries, its history has had a direct effect on its culinary culture. Before the arrival of the Europeans, there were two main indigenous groups: the Diaguita in the northwest and the Guarani further south. When the Spanish arrived in 1502 they noted that the southern inhabitants were primarily nomadic hunter gatherers, whilst the northwestern Incas were agricultural and cultivated maize. Cattle was introduced to the pampas in the 1550’s

A Brief History of Argentina
(Una Breve Historia de Argentina) In English: Europeans first occupied Argentina in 1516. In 1580, the Spanish established a permanent colony on the site of Buenos Aires. Formal declaration of independence from Spain was made on July 9, 1816. Argentina established national unity and adopted a constitution in 1853. Foreign investment, primarily British, was used to construct railroads and ports, aided by an influx of European workers. Conservative elements dominated politics until 1916, when their traditional rivals, the Radicals, won control of the government through a democratic election. The Radicals attempted to open opportunities for the expanding middle class until 1930, when a military coup returned the Conservatives to power. In the mid-1930s, new social and political groups competed for political power, including the modern, professional military and the labor movement that had emerged from the growing urban working class.

Argentine Political Economic History
The question that probably occurs to everyone reading of Argentina's history is how can a country that has so much potential have had such a troubled history. The tragic complexity of the problems of Argentina reminds one of the tragedies of Polish history. But Polish problems developed out of and in reaction to the external pressures of its two aggressive neighbors whereas Argentina's troubles seem to be of its own people's contrivance. Perhaps there is a similar difficulty of Argentines and Poles to find compromises and to accept them. Argentine society arose out Spanish Empire institutions and the development of the natural resources of the plains, the Pampas. The land produced grain and cattle and the land was held by a few families in large estates. The oligarchy of leading families ruled and controlled the economy and politics of Argentina. The revenues of these families came from the export of beef and grain. They spent their earnings on imported products. They supported free trade. They encouraged immigration from Europe as a source of an educated work force which would develop the economy of Buenos Aires. The oligarchy wanted political stability and supported a strong central authority as a means of promoting that stability. Generally otherwise they wanted as little involvement of the government in the economy as possible. In a word, the oligarchs were classical liberals.

Bahia Blanca - History W hen the national government decides on the foundation of the "Fortaleza Protectora Argentina", the origin of the city of Bahía Blanca, it sends by sea the greatest bulk of building materials which would be used in the construction of the fort and the designed village. Thus, in March 1825, receding the army and colonists, the schooner Lousie moors in the gorges of the bay with its shipment of building materials. Sailors had already set foot on the desertic saltpetre fields of the white bay. They are a symbol. The future greatness of this far away south began in the sea and goes on in the sea. The development of the port facilities starts as a tenancy granted by the national government to the Great Southern Railway Company, to set up a port in the Bahía Blanca area. The work was initiated in 1883 and the pier was opened on September 26th, 1885. This date is also considered as the foundation of the port location of Ing. White. This first facility, a solely iron construction, was a curved pier where only three ocean-going vessels and the same number of coastal traffic ones could moor. Nevertheless, its traffic capacity increased amazingly, surpassing by 1900 the two hundred thousand million tonnes, of which a million approximately constituted exported grain.

Back in time, the main economic activity in Mercedes was the metal industry. The history start in 1745 after the stopping of the attacks of native Indian soldiers. The construction of a Fort six miles away from the Sanctuary of Lujαn, ordered by Juan de San Martνn, indicated the first line of advance in the conquer of the desert and the foundation of " the Guard of Lujαn ". The arrival to the guard of Lujαn on June 25th. of that year, controlled by Captain Jose de Zαrate, had meant the definitive establishment of the Bunker. After the Revolution of May "blandengues" became " Regiment of Cavalry of the country " and the guard of Lujαn was dissolved. In 1812 the Mayor of "Santa Hermandad"( Saint Brotherhood) , first civilian authority of Mercedes was designated; in 1822. A new constitution was written and Bernardino Rivadavia was elected president. The provinces took offence to this, so Rivadavia resigned and civil war ensued from 1826-1828. It was at this time of civil war that the most influential man in 19th century Argentine history arose, Juan Manuel de Rosas. In 1829 he was elected to a three year term as a federalist, meaning he was an advocate of a government sharing power between the national and provincial sectors, as opposed to an unitario, who would support the idea of a strong central government.

    Culture
European influences permeate Argentina's art, architecture, literature and lifestyle. However, in the field of literature in particular, this has been a cross-cultural transaction, with Argentina producing writers of international stature such as Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cort¡zar, Ernesto S¡basto, Manuel Puig and Osvaldo Soriano. With the education of many Argentines taking place in Europe, Buenos Aires in particular has self-consciously emulated European cultural trends in art, music and architecture. As a result, there are many important art museums and galleries in the city, and it has a vigorous theater community. Argentine cinema has also achieved international stature, and has been used as a vehicle to exorcise the horrors of the Dirty War. Probably the best known manifestation of Argentine popular culture is the tango - a dance and music which has captured the imagination of romantics worldwide. Folk music is also thriving. Sport is extremely important to the Argentines and soccer is more of a national obsession than a game. Argentina won the World Cup in 1978 and 1986, and the exploits of Diego Maradona (the most famous Argentine since Che Guevara), have kept soccer fans, paparazzi and columnists busy for the past 10 years. Argentine Roman Catholicism, the official state religion, is riddled with popular beliefs which diverge from official doctrine. Spiritualism and veneration of the dead are deep-seated, with pilgrimages to the resting places of relations and of the famous dead a common sight. Spanish is the official language, but some immigrant communities retain their language as a badge of identity. Italian is widely understood, reflecting the influence of the country's single largest immigrant group, and BBC English is the preserve of the Anglo community. There are 17 native languages, including Quechua, Mapuche, Guaran, Tobas and Matacos.

    A bit of history
Before the arrival of the Spaniards, several indigenous groups populated the region. Another version related to the origin of the word Patagonia also making reference to the tehuelches, but in this case it says that the name comes from the huge tracks they left on the snow, due in part to their physique and also to the fact that they covered their feet with skins. Today, most of the Patagonian aborigines live in reserves or work in estancias. The mapuches constitute the most numerous community, with some 35,000 people. Rests of the primitive life of indigenous people are found in caverns with paintings and stone deposits called "picaderos" where even today arrow heads and different tools can be found.

Before the 1940s, Argentina imported all of its vehicles. Any model or make could be purchased, and many Dodge, Plymouth, Desoto. Fargo and Chrysler products were imported directly from the U.S (many still survive today over there). Production ceased for the Valiants in 1968 or 1969, when they were replaced by the Coronado and Polaras, also known as the 3700 GT in Europe. (Incidentally, one of these cars is seen in the first Batman movie directed by Tim Burton, as it was filmed in the U.K but they obtained American cars for this film, although the 3700 GT was never sold in the U.S. so it's a pseudo-American car). Indeed, your information on the Polara Coronado series is correct. However, I must add that the Polara R/T was a coupe with a slant 6 (not sure if the 170 or 225 cu. in) but the GTX was available with a 273 or 318 cubic inch V8 engine (I don't know which one exactly) (a rarity in Argentina, as most cars were 4 cyl or 6cyl). There were some limited edition GTXs with 6 cylinders as well. Andres Pinho's GTX.

    History
British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands and Dependencies rests on a secure historical and legal foundation. In 1690 the British, led by Captain Strong, made the first recorded landing on the Falkland Islands, which had no indigenous population before the arrival of settlers in the second half of the eighteenth century. The first British settlement was established in 1766. But up to 1833 there was a period of some confusion, when France, Britain, Spain and then the Buenos Aires Government at various times established small, local settlements, none of which endured for more than a few years.
Apart from having a small settlement and penal colony for a short period on the Islands before 1833 (the greater part of this was ejected for 'piracy' by the United States Navy in 1831) Argentina's claim to the Islands is based mainly on her having been a successor to the Spanish Viceroyalty of the River Plate, which also governed most of modern Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and Chile. In 1833 the British resumed control of the Islands, and from that date they have been in open, continuous, effective and peaceful possession, occupation and administration. The British people who came to live there thereafter became the first permanently established population of the Islands.

In two World Wars, the Falkland Islands have demonstrated their strategic value. In December 1914, the British Naval squadron from Stanley, under command of Admiral Sturdee, defeated the German fleet at the Battle of the Falkland Islands and thus regained control of the South Atlantic. In December 1939, some 25 years later, the Battle of the River Plate was won by a Royal Navy squadron, which repaired to Stanley after the action. Britain again controlled the South Atlantic.

    Argentina
Contents Back Next Home Karin Detert of Berlin, Germany, visited Argentina for three weeks, then later returned for another three months. While visiting King's Church in Thanet, U.K., in October of 1994, she reported [according to Peter Verral, New Wine internet list, October 19, 1994] that a new surge of spiritual power in Argentina had begun in 1992, bringing "a renewed hunger for God, a new emphasis on personal holiness, a new desire for prayer, and also demonstrations of the Spirit's power.... In my home church in Berlin we have had many visits from some of the leading men of God who are leading this Argentine revival; ministers like Omar Cabrera, Carlos Annacondia, Hector Gimenez and Claudio Freidzon. During these last three months, I have had the privilege of working in the church of Claudio Freidzon and I have been able to see and able to learn." The prelude to these events was in the early 1980s, at which time God raised up Carlos Annacondia, a businessman turned evangelist. "Crowds gathered together to hear him preach because his ministry was accompanied by signs and wonders, healings (for instance, filling of teeth) and deliverances. In mass crusades thousands of people accepted Christ as Saviour. Virtually every church grew" (ibid). "An emphasis on personal holiness has caused many to change their lifestyles. Less time spent watching television, for example. Critics have accused some of faking religious experiences. But the emphasis on holiness, the desire of the people to praise and worship, and increase in concern for reaching others with the Gospel are genuine. And although the revival started in Claudio's church, it has spread to hundreds of pastors and churches in Argentina. God has also opened doors for a world-wide ministry and, wherever he goes he ministers in this same anointing, which then remains in those places; and so this revival could be brought to many other places around the world, like for instance, also to my own church in Berlin, where God started moving in a tremendous way since September, 1993, when Claudio came to minister in our church.

It was here in Torre Argentina, the year 44 BC, that one of the most illustrious dictators was stabbed by his rival Brutus. Almost 20 centuries have passed since then, but Caesar's spirit surely lives on in some of our aristocratic cats who rule over their temples with vengeance and pride.

Stray and abandoned felines took refuge in the protected area below street level. From 1929 until 1993, the cats were more or less regularly fed by a succession of cat ladies or 'gattare' as they are called condescendingly by the Romans.
