Comparing Our Cultures
Some of the basic differences between our two cultures arise because of geographical reasons. For example, the fact that Argentina lies in the Southern Hemisphere and the United States in the Northern Hemisphere means that their seasons are opposite from one another; when it is summer in the South, it's winter in the North. Therefore the activities going on in one country and the other vary greatly at any time of the year. Take January for example.
January in Argentina
January 6 is a big day for the kids here in Argentina. That is the Day of the Three Kings. The night before, children set out a pair of shoes, along with grass and water for the kings' camels. Early the next morning they arise to find that the grass and water have been eaten, and the kings' have left presents alongside the shoes. What an exciting time!
January in the States
January in the U.S. comes in the heart of winter. Cold reigns throughout most of the country. School starts up again after the Christmas holidays. Many businesses hold sales in late December and early January to prepare for their semi-annual inventories. January 1, New Year's Day, is a day of parades and celebrations. Many of these are in conjunction with the Bowl games, American football games between U.S. universitites. These games mark the end of the college football season and usually determine the national champion. The oldest of these is the Rose Bowl, in Pasadena, California.

Lexia's program is hosted at the Universidad de Buenos Aires, the largest and most renowned public university in Argentina. Universidad de Buenos Aires currently has over 100,000 students, with a growing international student population. The facilities are located in a picturesque city neighborhood, close to the heart of Buenos Aires. Students resources throughout the semester.
Buenos Aires Housing
Students live in family homestays or in small student residences (Residencia) located within commuting distance of the University. Whether in dorms or in homestays, students share clean, safe and well-maintained accommodations. In the Residencia, doubles, triples and quads are available, with common kitchens and bathrooms. The dorms consist of Lexia participants and Argentinean and international students studying at local universities in Buenos Aires. Excursions
Integrated into the academic program are several one or multi-day excursions outside of Buenos Aires. Out-of-town excursions typically include some of the following: the Rio de la Plata Delta in El Tigre, "Gaucho"country, Martin Garcia Island, Gualeguaychu and Colonia or Montevideo, Uruguay. As part of the Civilization Seminar, faculty and program staff also organize short excursions in and around Buenos Aires to explore the cultural and political dynamics of the city firsthand. Under the cheap travel deals lies a very well developed modern culture that has had a recent run of bad luck, this means all the modern comforts you would expect to find in a european country are available but with a warmer climate and of course much less expensive. Hotels
Luxury hotels in Argentina can be found for the same price as a hostel in the outskirts of London or Paris. Hotel managers like the local citizens are quite friendly and most will speak a reasonable number of languages and service is everything you would expect from a 5 star european hotel. Tours
Tourism is an industry that Argentinans have embraced whole heartedly, tour operators run english speaking tours from the beaches through to unspoilt rainfoest and small secluded villiages inland.

Argentina: Journey to Patagonia
Trip #7226 One of the world's largest countries, with an area 60% the size of Europe, Argentina plunges 2,300 miles from tropical jungle in the north to Antarctic-like glaciers in Patagonia. Many adventurous travelers have been enthralled with the land of romantic gauchos, haunting tangos, rolling pampas, towering mountains, and sparkling lakes. Highlights of your soft adventures and natural history adventure include a private tango lesson in Buenos Aires; phenomenally scenic glacier hiking on Perito Moreno glacier (easy); bicycling, whitewater rafting or horseback riding (easy) in the incomparably beautiful Lake District; visiting a huge penguin rookery in Punta Tombo; enjoying a cooking workshop or arts and crafts tour in sophisticated Buenos Aires; and taking an adventurous boat ride to Iguacu's Devil's Throat Fall. Upon your return, you'll agree that Argentina's culture and scenery are equally captivating!
