CHAPTER 4
SOCIOECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL FUTURES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY IN CANADA
4.1. INTRODUCTION
The driving forces causing environmental change are largely socioeconomic. Populations of both people and automobiles are growing worldwide, there is over- consumption of energy and water, natural resources are being "mined", and there are surprising technological advances (often with unexpected environmental side effects, e.g., CFCs). Furthermore, there are important cultural shifts in human values over the decades. The 21st century is likely to see unprecedented rates of change in both the socioeconomic and the physical environments. Socioeconomic changes usually originate locally, e.g., urbanization, drainage of wetlands, and pesticide spraying. The impacts are in the first instance local, but in some cases they are continental (e.g., acid rain) or global (e.g., stratospheric ozone depletion and climate change). Canada contributes, of course, to these large-scale impacts, more than its share in some cases, e.g., the Canadian per capita use of energy is the largest in the world.

Overview
To guide the second year of the ARI, NOAA believed that additional thought about program themes, goals, and integration with other Arctic research activities was in order. Thus NOAA asked for the PRB's assistance, and this workshop was the result of that request. The intent of the workshop was to examine the ARI as currently structured and discuss how the program might evolve. Although this workshop can only provide a "snapshot" of the opinions of the participants, we hoped that through the presentations, brainstorming, and small group discussions, the workshop participants could examine the identified research themes and give input on whether they are still appropriate, expand on

  • Bigger is better when it comes to bottle bill ALBANY - More than two dozen environmental groups came to the Capitol Tuesday to push for a "bigger, better bottle bill," which would place a 5-cent deposit on non-carbonated beverage containers. The Record — The threat of terrorism has heightened concerns about the safety and security of the nation’s nuclear power plants. Particular scrutiny has been given to the Indian Point plant in Westchester County. Unhappy with federal officials’ handling of concerns about the plant’s emergency plans, lawmakers in a hearing Tuesday said the Federal Emergency Management Agency must explain by March 27 how it would respond to a terrorist attack at the plant. Advanced Environmental Chemistry
Offered: Spring 2004
CEE 545
Instructor: Greg Korshin
The focus of the class will be on the nature, formation and breakdown of major classes of controlled chemical species. Techniques to predict the behavior of these species in the environment and relevant engineering processes will be studied. Chemical interactions pertinent to ozonation, photochemical transformations, halogenation and dehalogenation will be examined. The students will carry out modeling using MINEQL+ and POLYMATH software. Main topics of the class will include 1. Major classes of pollutants and xenobiotics. 2. Kinetics of environmental processes. 3. Anthropogenic organic pollutants. 4. Natural organic matter. 5. Heavy metals in the environment. 6. Oxidations and radical reactions. 7. Photochemical transformations. 8. Chemistry of halogens 9. Halogenation of organic species. 10. Dehalogenation in the environment.
