Hello to anyone who's stumbled into this folder. As the name suggests, this is for materials pertaining to art and architecture. Please poke around it at your leisure - there are a few images, some gopher bookmarks and some texts. At the moment, though, I think it'd be fair to say that the folder is, well, a little lean. I'm hoping to change that. When time permits, I'll be addding to it myself. For now, I'm encouraging anyone and everyone to submit reviews, essays, articles, images and so forth. These might be things you're working on yourself, or they might be essays and images you've found on the net, etc. Whatever the case, please feel free to contribute. If you have any questions or comments, I can be reached at art@eserver.org . Feel free to drop me a line. Greg Bolton

So look around a bit (the Cultural Theory Multimedia and New Stuff folders are good places to start).

Visiting Romania gives you the chance to see Constantin Brancusi's works in the marvelous setting of a park in Targu Jiu, near Hobita, his home village. "The Endless Column" (Coloana Infinita) , "The Gate of the Kiss" (Poarta Sarutului) , "The Table of Silence" (Masa Tacerii) and "The Alley of Chairs" (Aleea Scaunelor) are displayed among trees and lawns as Brancusi wanted them to be.
Romania has a great diversity of museums preserving every facet of its history and arts. Some are small museums, catering to enthusiasts with a taste for special interests such as pharmacy, clocks, railway trains, folk arts and architecture, wine making and traditional crafts. Larger museums host regular exhibitions from around the world, as well as housing permanent collections of paintings and sculptures. Prominent museums include Romania's National Museum of Art, the Art Collections Museum, the Village Museum, the Museum of the Romanian Peasant in Bucharest, and the Bruckenthal Museum in Sibiu. For a listing of Websites offering more information on Romania's Museums, please check the Links
Romanians' vivid imagination and intense spirituality have always been expressed through their architecture. Fortunately, they also have strong preservation instincts, resulting in village museums that display bygone ways of life through found and restored peasant houses, elaborately carved gates, barns and other architectural elements. The best and most comprehensive of these is the Village Museum

Church on the Water Projects featured include private residences designed in the 1970s and Ando's Japanese churches of the 1980s, such as the Church of the Light in Osaka and the Church on the Water in Hokkaido. The church on the Water overlooks a shallow artificial lake which has been created by the diversion of a nearby stream. Among the highlights is the Naoshima Contemporary Art Museum (1992), a complex of galleries and guest hotels on a scenic bluff overlooking Japan's Inland Sea that demonstrates Ando's approach to connecting buildings with the earth by recessing them underground.

    Rafael Moneo
Spanish architect Rafael Moneo has won the Royal Gold Medal, awarded on 12 November 2003 at the Royal Institute of British Architects
Given in recognition of a lifetime’s work, the Royal Gold Medal is approved personally by Her Majesty the Queen and is given annually to a person or group of people whose influence on architecture has had a truly international effect. The award is for a body of work, rather than for one building or for an architect who is currently fashionable. Previous winners include Le Corbusier (1953), Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (1925), Frank Gehry (2000) and Archigram (2002), among many others.
This year’s Royal Gold Medal jury was chaired by Immediate Past President of the RIBA Paul Hyett and made up of Sir Terry Farrell, Piers Gough, Eva Jiricna, Lord Rogers of Riverside, Rick Mather and Mohsen Mostafavi.
Born in Tudela in the province of Navarra in 1937, Raphael Moneo’s work spans four decades. A prolific architect in his native Spain, with an extensive portfolio of projects overseas, Rafael Moneo’s career is characterised by a combination of teaching and work in practice.
