25. INTERVAL TRIP REPORT - New Museums
It was further pointed out that architecture museums cannot exhibit originals(ie, architecure) and therefore require some form of mediation.
http://www.naimark.net/writing/trips/ferraratrip.html
michael naimark home projects writings biography INTERVAL TRIP REPORT New Media for New Museums First International Retreat Bologna and Ferrara, Italy Michael Naimark "The people of Ferrara, they look different from the people of Bologna; their face structure is different," said Paolo as we were shuttled the thirty miles from Bologna to Ferrara. He seemed to be serious. Paolo Ceccarelli, one of the organizers of the retreat, knows this region of central Italy well, and has a deep appreciation of the character and differences of nearby towns here. Paolo is now the Dean of Architecture at the University of Ferrara, a small university by Italian standards: only 10,000 students, with 1,000 in the College of Architecture alone. He had spent many years as the Dean of the architecture school in Venice, where there are 10,000 students. The architecture school in Milan has 14,000 students. Colleges are free in Italy, and just about every young person will start in one, though less than 10% graduate. That's the system. The town of Ferrara, working with Paolo's department, is building a new museum of architecture and urban history; this was the reason for the retreat. The Italian government is interested in innovative musuems and has been seeding challenge grants. Ferrara received one of the first.

Beijing Museum of Ancient Architecture: Glories in Ancient Arts
Beijing Museum of Ancient Architectures lies on the old site of the Xiannong Altar which was built in 1420 AD. It used to be the site where the emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties offered sacrifices to farming gods and held tilling ceremonies. A group of ancient buildings including Xiannong Altar, The Hall of Taisui, the Divine Kitchen, the Divine Warehouse and the Hall of Clothes and Tools are well preserved. Zhen Shi Yuan Mendu'r Museum
"At that difficult point, Kiyoko calmly said to me, 'If this is the thing you want to do, let's do simply do it. It will do good to Chinese people.' " At the exhibition, I was surprised to see the mendun'r of my own old courtyard. I was very glad, yet I can't escape this sense of shame and loss. I walked in and out of that gate every day, but I never noticed the deep meaning and historical significance that it incurred. Guan Fu Ya Ji at Liulichang:
The Charm of Chinese Indoor Screens and Windows

This exhibition focuses on the windows, screens and inner layout of traditional Chinese houses. Traditional Chinese buildings are mainly composed of wood beams and columns. Doors with carvings and screens are used to link the columns. The screens, with beautiful carvings, usually have six or eight leaves.

  • The Dana-Thomas House

  • Description:
The Dana-Thomas House located in Springfield, Illinois, is the best preserved and most complete of Frank Lloyd Wright's early "Prairie" houses. The structure has changed little since its construction in 1902-04 for Springfield socialite and women's activist Susan Lawrence Dana. More than 100 pieces of Wright-designed white oak furniture is still in place along with 250 art glass doors windows and light panels. Two hundred original light fixtures and skylights illuminate the interior. Original sculptures in terra cotta by Richard W. Bock, and the only surviving, original George Mann Niedecken mural in any Wright house graces the four dining room walls.

Traditional house (riad) for rent in the medina; information about architecture, museums, monuments, and restaurants.
    http://www.houseinfez.com
Rent a House or Small Riad in the
    Medina of Fez, Morocco
    Fes, Maroc
Dar Bennis Amenities A Typical House in Fes Things to Do in Fes ... Shopping in Fez Dar Bennis is a small 18 th century traditional Moroccan house in the heart of the Fes medina, on a small street just off Talaa Sghira, the main business street of the medieval quarter. The house has been carefully restored over the past four years, using only traditional craftsmanship and materials. Although a modest house by Fez standards, it features hand-painted and natural cedar ceilings, windows and doors, carved plasterwork, stained glass windows, decorative ironwork, handmade zellij mosaic floors, and a rooftop terrace with an amazing panoramic view of the medina and surrounding mountains. The house is simply decorated, to accent the beauty of the architecture, with antique and handmade furniture and textiles. One of the main advantages of Dar Bennis as a holiday rental property, compared to a bed and breakfast, maison d'hotes (guest house), or larger riad, is having the complete house to yourself. It is also older than most riads and traditional hotels available in Fez, which date to the early 20th century and are located on the outskirts of the medina. Because Dar Bennis is deeper in the medina, the guest gets a real sense of what it's like living in the medina, with its joys and challenges.
