Landscape Architecture This story is from the Greater Vancouver Book by Chuck Davis. You can find more stories from the book or even purchase it here
    by Elizabeth Godley
In the Lower Mainland every gas station boasts a strip of Astroturf punctuated by flowers, every office building a tub or two of greenery. Come spring, our thoroughfares burst into blossom with ornamental plum and cherry trees. Our many parkstypically green year-roundare legendary, as are our gardens, replete with a wide range of plants from every corner of the globe. The mild winters and abundant rainfall have made Greater Vancouver a gardeners' paradise, and the lawns of even the most humble homes are enlivened by shrubbery, often a rhododendron or hydrangea bush. Perhaps the forgiving climate, coupled with the early immigrants' British disdain for showing off, hobbled the development of landscape architecture in these parts. Whatever the reason, landscaping got off to a shaky start in Vancouver. The first practitioner was Thomas Mawson, a landscape architect and town planner from Lancashire, England. In 1911 Mawson set up shop on the top floor of the Rogers Building at 470 Granville. He'd come to Vancouver on a cross-Canada lecture tour, and Vancouver's park commissioner immediately hired him to design the lighthouse and underground lifeboat house at Brockton Point.

Mies van der Rohe worked closely with Alfred Caldwell on the landscape design of IIT's campus. Caldwell's landscape plan reflected the native terrain and plantings of the prairie, naturally complementing the campus grid and the spare geometry of the buildings. Though some of Caldwell's original plantings remain, others have succumbed to the ravages of urban conditions. As a result, plantings and landscape design throughout the campus are inconsistent. The university will consider new landscape proposals as well as restoration of Caldwell's landscape features. Through implementing a landscape plan based upon an understanding of Mies's buildings, Caldwell's principles, and today's urban and academic environment, IIT will dramatically enhance the campus's year-round appearance. The landscape architect will also collaborate on the development of an oriented, experiential walking tour of IIT's Mies Campus.

    Landscape Architecture
Landscape architecture and garden designthe artificial modification of the terrainare among the most ancient of human endeavors, deriving from the desire to impose order and harmony upon the natural world. To this day landscape gardening and design are employed for both private and public pleasure, from the modest suburban home to the vast aristocratic estate, and from the town square to city parks and greenbelts. The earliest extant plan for a garden dates from ca. 1400 BC Egypt, and depicts a very symmetrical, tightly enclosed pattern. The pattern of enclosed courtyard gardens is also seen in many Greek and Roman examples, but there was also a tradition of large, open garden landscapes as reflected in the terraced gardens of Babylon, the Greek sacred landscape, and Roman villa garden. The medieval period turned garden design inward to an era of cloisters and private, walled environments, evidence of which is found in illuminated manuscripts and miniatures. The Renaissance revival in landscape design is reflected first in the Italian gardens of the mid-fifteenth century where the outdoor environment began to be treated as an extension of a building. The Italian formal garden dominated European garden landscaping for almost 300 years. The elaborate, geometric designs of French gardens, the Dutch use of topiary, and the English emphasis on grass lawns and gravel walks, were regional variations on the Italian symmetrical theme. Garden plans and books on gardens and garden design from the early sixteenth to the early eighteenth centuries all reflect this taste for the structured and the formal.

The urban concept called for reestablishing the link between City and River. Environment and landscape were to be restored, usefulness rediscovered.

Parque das Nações - A present for the future
The Parque das Nações urban development project covers 340 hectares, including 5 km of river front property on the Tagus River estuary. It includes 60 ha encompassing the Olivais Dock - a 1940's airport for hydroplanes, and site of the 1998 World Exposition. The development's first phase laid the foundations: designed as a public space and hosting EXPO'98 , it is a self-contained urban whole, with residential quarters, stores, services, urban infrastructure, parking facilities and parks. The urban "concept" called for re-establishing the link between City and River. Environment and landscape were to be restored, usefulness rediscovered. The development was to be woven into the city's fabric and contribute to defining the city as a whole, while becoming a new pole of attraction in its own right within the greater Lisbon area. EXPO'98 was more than just a chance for improving the environment and urban renewal. It was an opportunity to both modernize and internationalize Lisbon. Municipalities worked together for reconversion and renewal, ensuring accessibility and transport, when planning shopping centers, services and infrastructure, and for urban planning and in sponsoring ambitious events.
