You are in: Home Country Life Art And Architecture Staging the Event Throughout the summer, some of Britain's grandest country houses have provided the perfect backdrop for three-day eventing. Carla Passino looks at relationship between houses and horses. by Carla Passino All eyes were trained on Pippa Funnell on September 7 2003, as she jumped a clear round on Primmore's Pride to win the Burghley Masterfoods International Horse Trials and, with it, the richest prize in the history of eventing. Surrounding the show jumping arena, the grounds of Burghley House provided a suitably majestic backdrop for the performance that crowned Mrs Funnell queen of the sport. The relationship between eventing and Britain's country houses is a long and solid one. 'There are at least 60 stately homes that have events in Britain. In terms of the sport, these places are very important, not least because cross-country courses require a massive amount of space, which these estates can provide. Other countries lack facilities to hold events or rely on public parks, which are hard to come by, or purpose-built courses, which cost a lot more,' says Eventing magazine editor, Amanda Gee. 'And in terms of the public, country houses make for a very attractive setting and can turn an event into a family day.' The affair between Britain's historic houses and eventing started in 1949 when the first horse trials were held on the grounds of Badminton House, in Gloucestershire. The sport had made its Olympic debut in 1912 but it had been largely confined to army officers. In 1948, the Olympics took place in London and the British team failed to impress in the eventing competition. Among the under-whelmed spectators was the 10th Duke of Beaufort, a keen horseman. He decided to give British riders the opportunity to train for international eventing and volunteered the grounds of his Gloucestershire estate for the purpose. Badminton Horse Trials was born.

Architects of Ireland / Sir Edward Lovett Pearce (1699-1733) Sir Edward Lovett Pearce (1699-1733) was the leading exponent of Palladianism in Ireland along with Richard Cassels . In 1726 Pearce became the MP for Ratoath after a disputed election. His father, General Edward Pearce was first cousin to Vanburgh and Pearce came under his tutelage in 1715 after his father's death. He spent three years travelling in France and Italy studying as an architect before returning to Ireland to practice. His most important work is the former Houses of Parliament (1728-1739) in College Green now the Bank of Ireland which was completed after his death. Although later extended by Gandon And Johnston, his design can still be seen with the central arcade of columns and pediment. The original octagonal House of Commons was burnt in 1792 and later demolished but his House of Lords survives intact. He also designed the south facade of Drumcondra House (1727) and Cashel Palace (1731) along with many other country and town houses including two at Henrietta Street for Luke Gardiner.

By the mid-nineteenth century, the distinctions between specific Victorian revivals dissolved as visual appeal assumed even greater importance than it had in the preceding decades. The architectural tendency of this period was characterized by an indiscriminate mixing of various ornamental motifs and styles. The attraction of picturesque architecture was that no one group was privileged in understanding the whole of its composite parts. Victorian buildings often consisted of whichever components the architect happened to include in his design. While this practice may be seen as egalitarian, it must not be forgotten that the gap between the wealthy and the poor was growing steadily larger during this time period.

GERMAN VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE . The sizable German ethnic presence in Texas, particularly in the south central parts of the state, in the Hill Country, qv and in Medina County, has made a pronounced architectural imprint, especially on vernacular dwellings and churches. By and large, the peasant immigrants discarded their traditional German house and farmstead plans, in particular the lower Saxon and hill Hessian combination of human and animal quarters under one roof and the "Frankish court," a central German plan in which farm buildings are tightly grouped around an enclosed farmyard. They did so at least partly in order to conform to the customs of their new homeland. They adopted typically southern Anglo-American plans, such as the dog-run house. qv Fachwerk , or half-timbered, structures. This second phase ended about the time of the Civil War, qv and few if any half-timbered buildings were erected after 1870. Fredericksburg, Comfort, and New Braunfels retain the most notable concentrations of half-timbering, though individual specimens occur in the area between Austin and Houston. Though typically Hessian wattle-and-daub and Saxon fired brick fill the interstices of some Texas German half-timbered structures, builders more commonly used cut limestone blocks or adobe. qv Often Texas Germans covered their half-timbering with plaster and whitewash or weatherboarding. Beginning about 1850, another type of wall construction appeared among the Texas Germans-hewn stonemasonry. In Hessian and Frankish regions of Germany, such stonework normally appears in the ground floor of the house, and gives way to half-timbering in upper levels. Its origins probably lie in the Roman rule of Rhenish Germany. Although splendid specimens of German-built limestone and sandstone structures appear widely through south central Texas, the greatest concentrations are in the Hill Country and Medina County. Sometimes all three building phases-log, half-timbering, and stone-are combined in successive additions to individual German houses. In roofing, the Texas Germans departed radically from their European tradition. Some early thatching appeared, but Anglo wood shingling prevailed by 1850, and Germans helped develop the cypress-shingle industry of the Hill Country.

The Irish Independent
In Germany, original architecture is also in vogue with designers and architects battling for the headlines. Earlier this year design architect Werner Aissinger became the latest to do so with his 'loftcube' homes - portable flats that can be airlifted onto empty roofs and moved around from city to city, or country to country. Aissinger said the small, luxury living containers were perfect for big cities such as London or Tokyo, where overcrowding was rife and property prices sky high - as long as there were plenty of flat roofs. Described as "mobile homes for the urban nomad", the 'loftcubes' are set to go on the market in Germany and abroad at the end of the year. Due to circumstances beyound our control, the original story which was a working link at the time of publication may be no longer available on the newspaper site. In that case, the dates and headline of the story will allow you to research the original through your local library. In addition, some newspaper sites may require registration, either at a cost or free. 1996-2004 Archeire.com
