    International Houses Worldwide
International House Melbourne is proud to be a part of the worldwide grouping of International Houses. These International Houses offer collegiate-style student residence on the campuses of major universities worldwide. They are characterised by a desire to promote communication, understanding, tolerance and acceptance of diversity between students from all the countries and cultures of the world. They view this challenge as an integral part of their mission to deliver academic support to students undertaking tertiary education courses, equipping their students to utilise the skills gained in their courses in an increasingly globalised world in an appropriate and culturally sensitive manner. The Heads of International Houses regularly liaise with each other, ensuring that all International Houses benefit from the experiences and accomplishments of others within the group. This process ensures quality, consistency and internationalisation of standards across the worldwide group of International Houses. Student exchanges between International Houses often occur, enabling students to gain first-hand experiences of life in other countries or in differing areas of large countries. The International House Passport, available to all International House residents, is an initiative of the worldwide grouping, enabling those with connections to International House and its ideals to be recognised at all other International Houses. The passport also enables bearers to gain discounted accommodation at other International Houses, thereby facilitating students' continued exploration of other countries and cultures, in line with the International House ideal.

Wise man builds his house upon the web
Online encyclopedia aims to make homes earthquake-proof.
13 September 2002 JOHN WHITFIELD The encyclopedia describes nearly 80 types of houses in 30 countries A growing online encyclopedia of houses in earthquake-prone areas should help engineers to make buildings safer. In an earthquake, houses suffer more damage than other structures because they are often built using cheap materials and shoddy methods. "There can be huge loss of life," says Marjorie Greene of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) in Oakland, California. "Improving housing could make a big difference." To encourage engineers to make these improvements, the EERI, along with the International Association of Earthquake Engineering, last month launched an encyclopedia of the world's housing structures. Efforts to gather and distribute the information started in early 2000. The encyclopedia now describes nearly 80 types of house in 30 countries, Greene told the European Conference on Earthquake Engineering in London this week. Dwellings listed range from mud huts in Malawi to tower blocks in Chile.

The Abbott Lowell Cummings Award Named for one of the founders of the Vernacular Architecture Forum, the Abbott Lowell Cummings Award recognizes outstanding books published about North American vernacular architecture and cultural landscapes. Each year the review committee reads submissions and prioritizes them based on the new information they present, the role of fieldwork in research, the critical approach to material culture, and the model they provide in writing and research methods. The Cummings award is meant to reward accomplishments in the scholarship on vernacular architecture, stimulate more writing in the field, and encourage publishers to disseminate this needed research more widely. Abbott Lowell Cummings's exemplary record of field work and publication, particularly his magnum opus The Framed Houses of Massachusetts Bay, 1625-1725 (1979) remains an inspiration to us all and distinguishes this award. The Irish (in countries other than Ireland)
    I. IN THE UNITED STATES Who were the first Irish to land on the American continent and the time of their arrival are perhaps matters of conjecture rather than of historical proof; but that the Irish were there almost at the beginning of the colonial era is a fact support by historical records. The various nations of Europe whose explorers had followed Columbus were alive to the possibilities of land conquest in the new continent. For this purpose colonists were needed, and expeditions were fitted out under government protection, which brought over the earliest settlers. England was especially active in promoting these expeditions, and during the seventeenth century, various colonies, beginning with that of Jamestown in 1607, were planted with immigrants, most of them of English nationality. Irish names, however, are met with occasionally in the documents relating to these settlements; it is certain that there were Irish Catholics in the Virginia Colony prior to 1633. In the narrative of the voyage of the Jesuit Father Jesuit missionaries of these times we find Fathers Carroll, Murphy, Hayes, Quinn, O'Reilly, Casey, and others whose names indicate their Celtic origin.

    Medieval Manor Houses
The term "manor house" can be loosely applied to a whole range of buildings, but at its most basic refers to the house of a local lord/landowner. In strict architectural terms a manor house is a late medieval country house. Badesley Clinton The medieval manor house has its architectural roots in the Saxon hall, a simple rectangular building which acted as a communal gathering place for eating, sleeping, and transacting business. Servants and other retainers slept around an open fire in the centre of the hall, while the lord and his family occupied a raised dais at one end of the hall. This simple Saxon design was incorporated into early Norman castles, with the hall occupying the first floor of the castle keep.

    God in God’s Own Country
The distinctive temples are an integral part of the social fabric of the region Temple architecture in Kerala is different from other regions in India. The distinctive structure of the temples is largely dictated by the geography of the region that abounds in forests blessed with bountiful monsoons. The roofs are steep and pointed, and covered with copper sheets. The Kerala roof resembles those found in the Himalayan regions and in East Asia.
The shape of the roof is in keeping with the plan of the sanctum below. A circular plan has a conical roof, while a square one plan a pyramidal one. The roof is constructed with wood and is covered with copper plates. Given the perishable nature of the construction materials, most temples seen in Kerala today, have undergone several phases of renovation.
The sanctum sanctorum, or Sree Kovil, is surrounded by a cloistered prakaram, pierced at one or more cardinal points by gopuradwara. Directly in fron of the sanctum is a namaskara mandapam. This prakaram also houses subsidiary shrines and its south eastern corner is where the kitchen is located. The mukha mandapam is integrated with the gopura entrance. The balipitham may be located in the mukha mandapam or in the outer courtyard. The outer prakaram or courtyard houses other subshrines, and sometimes a temple tank.
The kuttambalam or the theatre hall is either a part of the inner prakaram or a separate hall outside the innermost prakaram, either facing into the temple or facing north. This has a stage for the performance of Kathakali or Chakkiyar koothu recitals. Thus the kuttambalam plays a role in educating visitors on the rich legends of the Indian cultural fabric.

I agree that the houses of worship in the Bahai faith are beautiful, but it is arrogant to say they are more than the worship centers of other faiths because they are centers of the spiritual community or expressions of humanitarian concerns. These are also functions of the houses of worship of other faiths as well, whether it be a Christian church, a Jewish synagogue, or a Moslem mosque.
I know that for thousands of years the cathedrals of Europe have served as sanctuaries for people oppressed by societies of governments. The concept of sanctuary was part of the humanitarian concern built right in to these magnificient timeless structures.
Ever since the founding of this country (America) the churches and synagogues and mosques have served as outlets of humanitarian aid. I am sure it is true of other countries as well.

Book Description Customer Reviews Ms. Saeks did a reasonable job, but the book is close to worthless if you want to design your house in a recognizable California Wine Country style. Katya and I suggest developing a color palette from the book, but after tens of hours of studying it we can not determine a quantifiable style. Consider this book as a raw first start; a survey of modest importance. The interiors are all over the map. The only commonality is their location in California. Worth buying - yes, but only to understand the diversity possible. Is a more serious study necessary - yes. California wine country is a combination of Tuscan, Provencal, and Spanish Colonial/Early California, with Asian influences. Themes and moods vary. Pretty much freestyle designing. However, certain rules will give you a recognizable style. We're working on it.- Jim and Katya Preston I collect decorating books (I'm obsessed with them!) and this is my absolute favorite! It's sitting on my coffee table and I look at it again and again; I wish I could find more like it. We have recently purchased/remodled another house and this book was the inspiration for many of the things I incorporated into this house.
