Progress In Other Countries
( Originally Published 1910 ) OUR studies have led us up to this point along the central line of progress, from Byzantium to Athens, thence to Rome, northward into France, and so onward. Only one offshoot or back-water have we followed — that of the Byzantine into Russia—and the others must be disposed of now. In travelling, either in Spain on the one hand or in Germany and the North countries on the other, one finds so much of interest and beauty in the old examples that it is difficult to realize these works are not within the main line of growth, and not vital or even participating in the development of architectural styles that have meaning for us today. Spain developed individually and with some distinction in a style somewhat muddied by her Arab invaders. It was this Saracenic control which kept her out of the main current of progress, and while it created for itself on its own account, there are not those elements in it vital to ourselves or to our times. Saracenic, or Moorish, architecture and decoration is seen in this country often enough to be familiar to most of us, but it is always an exotic and never quite fit or at home. In later times America borrowed from Spain a style made familiar in the old Spanish missions of Texas and California, which is now being used extensively. Even this style is distinctly foreign, especially in the North, and in the consideration of the great European movement which we have been watching it has no essential part.

Elizabethan England Elizabethan Architecture by Valerie Kamhi For many people today, houses are not only places to live; they are status symbols. This is the same way homes in the Elizabethan period were looked upon and judged: as signs of social class and personal status. There were several types of homes in this period: royal works, great houses, smaller country homes, and farmhouses. As in modern day times, much of a person's choice of a home depended on his income and the social class with which he was associated. The kings and queens had the royal works, which were usually spread for miles, as far as the human eye could see. The upper-class, usually doctors or business men, had what was known as great homes. These were not as outlandish and extraordinary as the royal works but were definitely very large and quite nice. The smaller country homes were usually owned by the merchants and craftsmen (tradesmen). Lastly, there were the farmhouses, which most of the time were occupied by farmers and their families. As the royalty of the Elizabethan period grew, so did their homes, not only in size and magnitude, but also in greatness and volume. These homes had glorious stone foundations with several levels and too many rooms to count. Many of these houses contained numerous halls, chapels, great rooms, parlors, large bay windows, and several flying buttresses. The courtyards had miles of beautiful vegetation and extraordinary stone gardens and walls. These homes were not commonplace for this period, but they were nothing less than absolutely remarkable.

Modern Architecture In the period after the Revolution the erstwhile Soviet Union at first encouraged modern art, and several architects, notably the German Bruno Taut, looked to the new government for a sociological program. The Constructivist project for a monument to the Third International (1920) by Vladimir Tatlin was a machine in which the various sections (comprising legislative houses and offices) would rotate within an exposed steel armature. A workers' club in Moscow (1929) had a plan resembling half a gear, and the Ministry of Central Economic Planning (1928-32), designed by Le Corbusier, was intended to be a glass-filled slab but, because of Stalin's dislike of modern architecture, was never completed. Its foundation later was used for an outdoor swimming pool.
Modern European styles of architecture were subjected to official disfavour in the Soviet Union in the 1930s, as Stalin's government adopted classical monumentssuch as Boris Mikhaylovich Iofan's winning design for the Palace of the Soviets (1931), which was intended to pile classical colonnades to a height of 1,365 feet and have a colossal statue of Lenin at its summit. With its gigantic Corinthian columns, the building for the Central Committee of the Communist Party at Kiev (1937) showed an overbearing scale.

Architecture Australia
May, 2000
For the first decade in our history, a large number of Australians are building architecture and practices around the world. Here's an incomplete survey of recent work by expatriates and trans-nationals. WARREN LANGLEY IN FRANCE Amiens, the home town of futurist Jules Verne, commissioned Sydney artist Warren Langley to commemorate the millennium, and specifically Verne's story 'Amiens in the Year 2000' with glass and light installation across the facade of the city's Maison de la Culture. With fibre optics firms Supervision (USA) and Digilin (Australia), he created a 400 metre-long 'drawing in light', with mutating colour effects, named 'Ode to Pianowski'. COX RICHARDSON IN BANGKOK The centrepiece of Thailand's recent Asian Games and current Olympic bid is a stadium designed by Sydney's Cox Richardson, along with an aquatic centre, for a site on the Rangsit campus of Thammasat University in Bangkok. The stadium seats 20,000 in a podium-based bowl with an undulating rim. The roof is supported by a coronet of masts and cables. On ground level, a colonnade of brightly painted concrete columns leads to a dramatic entry.

PEOPLE go to Japan and appreciate Japanese architecture. They go to China and become inspired by Chinese architecture. Tourists go to France and marvel at French architecture. If people would come to the Philippines, would they be able to find touches of Filipino architecture? The answer is, hardly. One of the few architectural firms that consistently designs Filipino in everything it does is Mañosa and Partners. For years, the "Mañosa signature" has become so popular that people would readily identify native-inspired structures contemporary or otherwise with the architecture firm.

Haiku Houses' designs are linked with the past. The 16th century feudal period of Japan was one of high culture and of great respect for nature and beauty. Haiku Houses' designers and architects have distilled the best of that period's traditional architecture, especially the minka, and redefined it using the finest materials available. The grace, simplicity, modesty, and restraint of the modern Haiku House conveys a sense of purity and serenity. The Haiku House provides a physical spaciousness that invites nature into the house. Numerous windows allow the sun to light the heart of the house. Natural airflow freshens and cools the homes atmosphere. The various woods and large Douglas fir poles help provide a feeling of living among the trees in the forest. Each Haiku House has a Great Room and a Grand Veranda. These design features help create the ultimate experience of a free and open home. The Great Room is made possible by the pole-and-beam structural system, which can support the great expanses of roof without intervening walls, thereby providing exhilarating, unobstructed spaces. In a Haiku House, you can have any floor plan you desire. Unlike today's conventional housing systems, Haiku Houses' structurally enginerered framework of poles and beams support the entire house. Thus there are no load-bearing walls in a Haiku House and the walls can easily be rearranged, allowing you to customize any floor plan to suit any design.

Ideas on country design and architecture October 26, 1999 Country Living's deputy editor, Lawrence A. Bilotti, is here with us today to exchange ideas on design, architecture and other important aspects of "Country Living." Page 1 of 4 HomeArts: Welcome to our chat with Country Living's deputy editor, Lawrence A. Bilotti. This will be an opportunity for you to get acquainted with Lawrence, and to exchange ideas on design, architecture and other important aspects of "Country Living." Welcome, Larry! Lawrence Bilotti: It's great to be here! It's particularly good to be participating in the chat today since I was the original editor to launch "Country Living" online back in August of 1995. So, let's begin! I always look at the homes featured in Country Living and am amazed at how pulled-together they look. Is there some trick to getting a mix of finishings, furniture and accessories that work so well together? Lawrence Bilotti: Bubbles, most of the homes that you see are the actual homes of people like yourself. The reasons that we photograph the homes we do are because they do have the right mix of furnishings, furniture and accessories. One of the strong features of the magazine is that all of the interiors are really a reflection of personal style. The new column that we just introduced, "What Makes It Country," which launched with the October issue, actually calls out specific details in a room that can help readers create the look for themselves.

The Greek Revival style was popular from 1820 to 1860. Americans saw the Greek Revival style as an expression of the developing character of their own young country. The University of California, Berkeley Libraries' collections are arranged according to a subject classification system devised by the Library of Congress. Architectural materials are generally assigned to a section of call numbers beginning with the letters NA, although substantial related materials are found in TH (building and construction), NC (drawing and graphic arts), NK (interior architecture and design), GN (vernacular architecture), E-F (U.S. history, historic preservation), HT (city planning), K (architecture and law), LB (buildings for education), RA (hospital design), etc. For a detailed listing see the Library of Congress Classification Outline (http://lcweb.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/lcco/lcco.html). The following guide to the NA section will assist the student who wishes to browse this portion of the Environmental Design Library's architectural collection. Note that browsing a collection as large as the Environmental Design Library has considerable limitations: users will miss volumes checked out, in remote storage, in other libraries on campus, and in other classifications. Remember also that architects will need to use many materials beyond those classed NA, and that classifications change over the years, so a thorough search of your subject will require checking the Library catalogs: Pathfinder,

    H@R! : Heritage at Risk
    VERNACULAR HERITAGE
All over Europe it is also a problem of traditional conservation philosophy with its roots in the late 19 th This communist concept was also transferred to other East European countries, to much smaller entities all over the country: in Hungary, for instance, in almost every village one house or farmstead has been restored or reconstructed and converted into a museum of local vernacular traditions, the rest of the houses being available for renewal or changes. Only Bulgaria tried to find a different solution, starting to declare some villages as "museum villages", the most famous example being Koprivstica near Sofia. After moving the population from the settlements all houses were completely renewed, that means reconstructed and the villages were opened for visitors, especially from abroad. As a consequence, the normal life of such vernacular settlements died from the very beginning: after the events of the 1990s, almost all houses in those former museum villages are now owned by people from the big cities, who use them as weekend houses. After the events of 1989, the attitude started to change in the East European countries due to very close contacts with international specialists. But even today, as long as some of the functionars in charge with the protection and conservation of monuments are content with the heritage value of the vernacular, the step forward towards recognition as historic monuments still seems to be very difficult. In Romania, a couple of months ago, a new department for non-listed heritage, that is for vernacular heritage, was created within the Ministry of Culture. Such an initiative has to be considered as very positive, because in most other countries, in Europe, Asia or Latin America, with a rich heritage and several items on the World Heritage List of UNESCO, vernacular heritage is neither protected nor considered worthy to be conserved.

Although distinctive conception, culture and life style dominate in other countries, but more and more private customers appear who like Lithuanian style, though speaking more correctly – the style of some Lithuanian authors. Delicate works of architect Rasa Jonikaitë can not be disliked (we written about this architect in our magazine No.6, 2002). Plastic and sensitive feeling of harmony, playful management of space and elements those are the features which let her remain creative and original in every new situation. Indeed Rasa easily finds the key to customer’s heard. One of her last works - magnificent apartments in Minsk – is a proof.

The Architecture of Country Houses , by famed architect, interior designer, garden designer, and early Victorian trend-setter Andrew Jackson Downing, is an excellent resource for those who own homes from the 1840 to 1870 period, architectural and interior design students, and people interested in the early Victorian lifestyle. It features 33 house designs, in styles of Gothic, Italian, Bracketed, Swiss, and more (also includes plans for stables); 44 pages on furniture (including examples in the Gothic, Elizabethan, Cottage, Louis XIV, Louis XV, and other styles); 41 pages on the "treatment of interiors," in the Greek Revival, Gothic, Elizabethan, Italian, Bracketed, and Romanesque modes; as well as many pages of advice on everything from proper ventilation to what materials should be used in building. Home PHOTOS The Lublin region is justly proud of being at the crossroads of European history while also being one of the most unspoilt areas of Poland. Traditional crafts, thatched houses, attractive unspoiled villages, ancient and historic monuments and a richly varied countryside provides the visitor with an intriguing insight into Poland's varied history as well as traditions. In the south of the Lublin region there are fertile Lublin uplands of the Roztocze area, cut by numerous ravines. In the north you can find the Masovia and Podlaskie lowlands covered by dense forests. Crisscrossing the region are numerous rivers of which the Vistula and Bug are the most notable. The Vistula Gorge between Kazimierz and Pulawy offers the visitor a wonderful opportunity to view the river at its scenic, whilst there are numerous other points of interest to be found, of which the section of the Bug close to the village of Serpelice should not be missed. The beautiful Poleski National Park to the north west of the region lies partly in the Leczna-Wlodawa Lake District. Several dozen lakes big and small have been preserved in their natural state offering both recreational opportunities and spectacular views. This area's varied scenary encompasses dense forests, widespread meadows and peat bogs with unusual preserved plants, a number of which can only be seen elsewhere in the nothern tundra of the Arctic Circle. The area is also an ornithologists' delight with a wide variety of birdlife.
