The Old House Web By Deborah Holmes This octagon house in central Maine awaits restoration. Dormer windows are unusual for this style house, which usually included a cupola.   Photo: Deb Holmes 2002 The mid-19th century saw an American fascination with exotic architecture, and forms from other countries Turkish pavilions, Swiss chalets, Chinese pagodas began springing up. The unique American contribution to innovative house shapes was the octagon house, a style made popular by amateur architect Orson Squire Fowler. Fowler extolled the virtues of healthier life-style and economy of his design. Although more than a thousand octagon houses were built, American preference for four-sided dwellings won out. Most of these homes, from grand mansions to humble country Victorians, were built within a decade between roughly 1850 and 1860. The octagonal shape lent itself to various embellishments of style, from Greek Revival, shown in the picture at right, to Georgian, and even Moorish. Rare variations of the style include the circle and hexagon.

The earliest buildings that were built in Greece , in the New Stone Age , are small houses or huts , and wooden walls around them for protection. Later there are bigger houses, and stone walls around the villages. By the Early Bronze Age , we find one bigger house in the middle of the village, and fancier, bigger stone walls. In the Late Bronze Age , under the influence of Western Asia , and the Minoans on Crete, there are palaces and big stone tombs , as well as paved roads and bridges, and dams (and more stone walls). During the Greek Dark Ages the palaces were burned, and the roads and bridges and dams mostly fell apart. But at the end of the Dark Ages, with the beginning of the Iron Age and the Archaic period in Greece, we see a new type of building: the

Itsukushma Shrine Overview Overview Chinese architecture has historically influenced that of Japan. In spite of this, there are still major differences between the two. One variation with Japanese architecture typically placed people on the floor to sit, whereas that of China had them sitting in chairs. This custom began to change though in the Meiji period (1868-1912). Another influence, besides lifestyle, is the climate. Japanese have to plan according to the climate and season changes. Since most of Japan has long, hot summers, the houses reflect that by being somewhat raised so that air can move all around. Wood is a popular choice for material because it adjusts well to earthquakes and works well with season changes (cool in summer, warm in winter). Buddhism as well has greatly influenced Japanese architecture since it's introduction from China during the Asuka period (593-710). Horyuki Temple was built in 607 under the influence of Buddhism, and was registered in 1993 as a UNESCO World Heritage property. The layout of this temple has been unchanged and preserved over the years. The Buddhist deity worshipped at the temple is housed in the main hall, which is the oldest wooden structure in the world and the center of the entire complex. Back to Top The Nara period (710-794) brought about imitation of the Chinese capital. A capital city, Heijokyo, was planned as an imitation of the Chinese capital and included a checkerboard pattern for the streets. Nobility were housed in buildings during the Heian period (794-1185) that had the main buildings and sleeping rooms in the center with corridors connecting other apartments. This style is called

I have enjoyed his shows for many years. For those of you who have not seen this show, Bob Villa was the host for a TV program called "This Old House." Villa would line up a homeowner who wanted to fix up an old house, develop a plan for repairs, line up contractors to do the work, and typically find additional problems that would often drive the costs over budget. Homeowners would typically contribute their own "sweat equity" to get the house completed. He worked with master carpenter Norm Abrams who later developed and hosted his own show called "The New Yankee Workshop," in which he would lead the viewer through the steps to build replica furniture. Villa would also get various companies to allow filming in their factories so that the audience could see how products are manufactured. Tours of plywood, concrete block, window and door, kitchen and bath, roofing materials and other manufacturing plants, provided interesting entertainment.

Below is a partial list of the most important publications that were used as references for architectural design and building construction. As a preservationists and design professionals and as a heritage recorders it is important to be able to recognize the design source of both 'high-style' and vernacular structures. Reference to these publications does much to help reach this goal.

Great Lakes Indian tribes depended on the forests for raw materials for their homes and they built a variety of dwellings depending on the season. The most common was the dome-shaped wigwam, which served from late fall through spring. With the exception of the Iroquois, all Woodland tribes from New England to the Mississippi River built this style of structure. The general living pattern of Great Lakes Indians consisted of residence in a wigwam for a six-month period during the late fall, winter, and early spring, while the other six months were spent in the summer house, sometimes a considerable distance from the wigwam. When it was time to shift from one house to another, they merely removed the mats from the first house and placed them on the other. The framework of the abandoned house was left standing, to be used at the next semiannual shift.
    Wigwam
The floor pattern was circular or more commonly oval. Saplings of an inch or more in diameter were cut and sharpened at the large end. Beginning at the doorway, these were set into the ground vertically and spaced about two feet apart. One pole and its opposite were bent toward the center to form an arch, and the ends were tied together with basswood-bark strips or other cordage. When all the vertical poles were tied, other saplings were tied on horizontally, to brace the frame and provide attachments for the bark or mat covering. More saplings were added to the top portion to form a sturdy framework. Then, beginning at the doorway, a mat was unrolled along the base, and its upper edge tied to the first horizontal pole. Other mats were added to cover the circumference of the framework. Inner layers of mats and grass were added inside for warmth and insulation. Raised platforms built inside the wigwam created beds and storage spaces and were covered with mats and furs .

    History of Philippine Architecture
by Architect Manuel D. C. Noche The history and culture of the Philippines are reflected in its architectural heritage, in the dwellings of its various peoples, in churches and mosques, and in the buildings that have risen in response to the demands of progress and the aspirations of the people.
Architecture in the Philippines today is the result of a natural growth enriched with the absorption of varied influences. It developed from the pre-colonial influences of our neighboring Malay brothers, continuing on to the Spanish colonial period, the American Commonwealth period, and the modern contemporary times. As a result, the Philippines has become an architectural melting pot uniquely Filipino with a tinge of the occidental.
The late national hero for architecture, Leandro Locsin once said, that Philippine Architecture is an elusive thing, because while it makes full use of modern technology, it is a residue of the different overlays of foreign influences left in the Philippines over the centuries: the early Malay culture and vestiges of earlier Hindu influences, the more than 300 years of Spanish domination, the almost 50 years of American rule, the Arab and Chinese influences through commerce and trade over the centuries. What resulted may have been a hybrid, a totally new configuration which may include a remembrance of the past, but transformed or framed in terms of its significance today.
