Smithsonian Institution, P. O. Box 37012, Washington, D.C. 20013-7012 Cynthia R. Field, Chair Architectural History and Historic Preservation Division and Associate Director, Office of Physical Plant The Architectural History and Historic Preservation Division (AHHP), part of the Office of Facilities, Engineering and Operations, conducts research on the architectural history of Smithsonian buildings. In addition, the division is responsible for the Smithsonian's historic preservation policy and practice, as well as the research and care of the "Castle" Collection. This body of over 3000 Victorian decorative objects is used exclusively in the furnishing of selected spaces in the Smithsonian Institution Building and the Arts and Industries Building. An extensive archive of records relating to the buildings of the Smithsonian Institution complex, their design and construction, and changes to their fabric, is maintained in the division. These records, including correspondence, photographs, and drawings, constitute the main sources on the architectural history of Smithsonian structures. This archive is consulted for the restoration of all Smithsonian buildings, and used by scholars undertaking architectural and social history research. Appropriate finding aids are provided for the use of these materials.

Doctoral Program Subcommittee on Architecture (History and Theory)
Degree Programs: Full-Time: M. Phil., Ph.D.
Chair: Kenneth Frampton
404 Avery
Tel:212.854.2444
The doctoral program addresses the study of the development of modern architectural form as it has been affected by social, economic and technological change. It assumes that only an academically oriented graduate program in architecture is equipped to address the complex relations currently existing among the profession, the civil institutions and the society at large. Academically trained M.Arch. graduates who have also had some experience in professional practice are particularly suited to carry out research in this specific area, largely because of their grounding in the conceptual and instrumental procedures by which architecture comes to be realized.
The main focus of the program is the development of modern architecture and urbanism from 1850 to the present. It is especially suited to students who are primarily interested in the architectural avant-garde and post-avant-garde developments, the evolution of American architecture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the modernization of urban fabric in Europe, America and the broader colonial context. The program emphasizes the architectural production of the past eighty years, or so, in relation to the problems facing the profession and society. It is oriented toward the evaluation of contemporary architectural theory and practice and as this is affected by technological and ideological changes.

    Architectural History and Theory Group
Research in this field is conducted within a number of thematic groups. The work of the Group has an international reputation, which is demonstrated by the members' prominence as invited speakers at international conferences, publication in internationally recognised journals and the international circulation of a number of recently published books. Architectural history has a particular emphasis on the 19th/20th centuries. Professor Weston's research on Nordic architecture has produced the first comprehensive authorised monograph on Jorn Utzon, written with unprecedented access to Utzon and his archive. His works on regional interpretations of modernism are reflected in an account of the 20th century house commissioned by Calman and King. Dr Loach investigates architecture within the context of cultural history, focussing on 17th and 20th century France, and 19th century industrial architecture, using an interdisciplinary approach with methods drawn from social and economic history. Her Lyonese and Jesuit cultural studies have been expanded by recent library findings and gaining access to manuscripts in private ownership hitherto not disclosed. Dr Samuel is working on Le Corbusier's unbuilt scheme for La Sainte Baume. She has published articles relating to her research in a variety of fields (literature, theology, cultural studies and architecture).

Architectural history is taught within the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning, but also in the Faculty of Arts. It deals with aspects of the history, interpretation, representation, cultural context, design, planning, construction, and conservation of buildings, viewed in a perspective of social history and cultural milieu. Specific subject areas include the wide range of European architecture, architecture of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Greek and Roman architecture, Asian architecture, and Australian architecture.
A major in this area can lead to postgraduate studies as indicated below. These postgraduate studies are most often directed towards professional specialisation in the building conservation field. Although the specific major detailed below has only recently been introduced, earlier graduates of the Faculties in this field constitute a large proportion of the professionals now working for private consultants and government in Victoria in the areas of survey and identification, design and conservation controls, historical research, and the physical conservation of buildings.

Street. An Architectural history of Wakefield, The area which is now Wakefield was first settled in 1639 by a small group of settlers.
    http://www.wakefieldma.org/architecture.html
A nineteenth century Franklin Poole painting of Main Street. An Architectural History of Wakefield The area which is now Wakefield was first settled in 1639 by a small group of settlers. We have no buildings surviving from the town's earliest period, but we do have a still functioning system of roads, a pattern of land use, landscaping features and the Old Burial Ground, laid out about 1688-1689
Wakefield's earliest surviving structure may be the First Period part of the Hartshorne House , thought to date from 1681. Beginning as one room, now at the southwest corner of the house, the structure was greatly expanded during the Georgian period. Another First Period House, an ell of an old farmhouse, survives at 391 Vernon Street and has been tentatively dated to 1680. The main part of this house was built by Captain Daniel Green in Lynnfield in 1750. It was moved to Wakefield by his son, Caleb Green. The house has been placed in a special "First Period" grouping of structures on the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service.
As the agricultural community tended to grow slowly, not many Georgian houses were built in Wakefield. Of those remaining, most have been altered, often radically.
