An Architectural History
Casino restaurant entrance displaying Victorian shingle-style architecture and lattice work.
he Newport Casino, home of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, is a structural masterpiece, which stands today as one of the finest examples of Victorian shingle-style architecture in the world. The Newport Casino was commissioned in 1880 by James Gordon Bennett, who hired the architectural firm of McKim, Mead and White to design and build the facility. McKim, Mead and White was the premier architectural firm of the late 19th and early 20th century, and the Newport Casino was one of the firm's earliest projects. Stanford White has often been credited with the design of the Casino, however, recognition must also go to Charles McKim, who was responsible for capturing the symmetry and balance of the Bellevue Avenue facade
The term "shingle-style" refers to a late 19th century style of architecture, which was domestic, asymmetrical and relative to its natural setting. Shingles and colonial motifs were used as a deliberate attempt to create an image based on indigenous precedents. McKim, Mead and White were considered the torchbearers of this search for American architectural style. Using the early American architecture throughout New England, it was natural that the Casino would have such Colonial elements as the dark wooden shingles, the elaborately turned balustrade of the entrance hall stairway, the steeply pitched gables and second story overhang - all reminiscent of the great Puritan homes of Massachusetts.

http://www.nexusjournal.com/Frings.html
Abstract In the never-ending - but always young - discussion about the Golden Section in architecture never lacks the hint at Luca Pacioli and the architectural theory. But what always lacks is a thorough study of this topic, the Golden Section in architectural theory. The paper aims to present this analysis. Marcus Frings traces Golden Section from the mathematical and rather theoretical character of Pacioli's concept, examines Alberti, Serlio, Palladio and other architectural treatises, to arrive to Adolf Zeising in the nineteenth century and to theorist Matila Ghyka and the practitioners Ernst Neufert and Le Corbusier in the twentieth. In the latter's writings and designs the Golden Section seems to play the role of a scholarly element which shows the master's theoretical erudition, leading to contemporary architects such as Ricardo Bofill.

Gives brief overview and characteristics of Japanese art throughout history.
http://mirror.oir.ucf.edu/wm/paint/tl/japan/
Japanese Art and Architecture
Japanese Art and Architecture , works of art produced in Japan from the beginnings of human habitation there, sometime in the 10th millennium BC, to the present. Historically, Japan has been subject to sudden invasions of new and alien ideas followed by long periods of minimal contact with the outside world. Over time the Japanese developed the ability to absorb, imitate, and finally assimilate those elements of foreign culture that complemented their aesthetic preferences. The earliest complex art in Japan was produced in the 7th and 8th centuries AD in connection with Buddhism. In the 9th century, as the Japanese began to turn away from China and develop indigenous forms of expression, the secular arts became increasingly important; until the late 15th century, both religious and secular arts flourished. After the Onin War (1467-1477) Japan entered a period of political, social, and economic disruption that lasted for nearly a century. In the state that emerged under the leadership of the Tokugawa clan, organized religion played a much less important role in people's lives, and the arts that survived were primarily secular. Painting is the preferred artistic expression in Japan, practiced by amateur and professional alike. Until modern times, the Japanese wrote with a brush rather than a pen, and their familiarity with brush techniques has made them particularly sensitive to painterly values. They found sculpture a much less sympathetic medium for artistic expression; most Japanese sculpture is associated with religion, and the medium's use declined with the lessening importance of traditional Buddhism. Japanese ceramics are among the finest in the world and include the earliest known artifacts of their culture. In architecture, Japanese preferences for natural materials and an interaction of interior and exterior space are clearly expressed.

    http://wnt.utexas.edu/architecture/academic/architecture/grad/arch_hist/
The graduate Architectural History Program at The University of Texas at Austin is among the handful of architectural history faculties in the United States housed within a school of architecture. Its purpose is to prepare students to teach and do research at the highest level. Faculty and students pursue a wide range of approaches and methodologies, but emphasis is placed on understanding buildings and their architects in context and on viewing buildings and design as complex and interconnected wholes. The program offers unusual depth in the modern period. All of the core faculty members actively research and publish on the history of modernism, and their work covers a broad array of issues, figures, and locales. The program embraces the history of architecture in the broadest sense, to include architectural history, history of architectural theory, urban history, history of interior design, and other historical dimensions of architecture and building practice. Students are encouraged to shape their own critical approaches and to develop a mastery of historical research and writing. Otto Wagner, Church am Steinhof Vienna, 1904-06; from Anthony Alofsin's forthcoming book

Origins of landscape Architecture Comment on the histories of garden design and landscape architecture Garden design has an ancient history but it was not treated other than in the most cursory manner before the seventeenth century. Vitruvius touches upon the subject but there was little space for horticulture within the walls of fortified cities. John Evelyn wrote on the subject but did not publish the work in his lifetime. Stephen Switzer wrote one chapter on the history of gardening (1715). Walpole penned a brilliant but misleading essay on the History of the modern taste in gardening (1770). Loudon included an illustrated history of gardens in his 1822 Encyclopedia of gardening . During the twentieth century a large number of histories of garden design appeared. Olmsted was the first person to adopt landscape architect as a professional title, though he did non invent the term. Patrick Geddes, the first British citizen to call himself a landscape architect, was an admirer of Olmsted and Repton. Geddes commented that 'City improvers, like the gardeners from whom they develop, fall into two broadly contrasted schools, which are really, just as in gardening itself, the formal and the naturalistic' [Geddes, City development (Edinburgh, 1904)]. It is evident that Geddes had seen a link between garden design, public parks and town planning. It re-appears in his book on
