art and architecture, history and design lessons Posted by Marti Niemann (67.0.136.176) on June 21, 2003 at 12:55:42: Hello. I just found this forum and website. What a resource for information! I'm reading through all the posts I can find, and I see there are several people looking for art/art history lessons for homeschoolers.
I have similar concerns, but my field is architecture and architecture history. Much of art history in directly related to architecture (think cathedrals, stained glass, pyramids, Pompeii, etc.) and there is not really a great suply of lessons/literature written for elementary ages.
I am currently developing a series of unit studies on architecture. It includes design principles, of course, but also historyand from a Christian perspective, drawing (floor plans, elevations, perspectives) and all the other disciplines that accompany architecture: vocab, math, science, etc.
It is slow work because there is so much to teach, so much to learn about the thousands of years of art and architecture! But if you are interested in knowing more, you can visit my website.

The earliest buildings that were built in Greece , in the New Stone Age , are small houses or huts , and wooden walls around them for protection. Later there are bigger houses, and stone walls around the villages. By the Early Bronze Age , we find one bigger house in the middle of the village, and fancier, bigger stone walls. In the Late Bronze Age , under the influence of Western Asia , and the Minoans on Crete, there are palaces and big stone tombs , as well as paved roads and bridges, and dams (and more stone walls). During the Greek Dark Ages the palaces were burned, and the roads and bridges and dams mostly fell apart. But at the end of the Dark Ages, with the beginning of the Iron Age and the Archaic period in Greece, we see a new type of building: the

in Ancient and Medieval Times Architecture is the art of building. Sometimes people build small buildings like sheds or their own houses . Other times people build very large buildings. These are sometimes temples or churches for the gods , or tombs for important kings or heroes, or palaces for kings and queens, or public buildings like theaters or sports stadiums. The first houses were built around 7000 BC in Western Asia , but the first big buildings were built much later, around 3000 BC . In Western Asia the first big buildings were the ziggurats , and in Africa, in Egypt they were the Pyramids A little later on, about 1800 BC , both the Egyptians and the Babylonians began to build big royal palaces , richly decorated. Soon the people of Crete and
