Timeline
The period termed "art deco" manifested itself roughly between the two world wars, or 1920 to 1939. Many actually stretch this period back to 1900 and even as far as the late 1950's, but work of this time is generally considered to be more of an influence to the Art Deco style, or having been influenced by the style. As with many other art movements, even work of today is still being influenced by the past.
This period of design and style did not just affect architecture, but all of the fine and applied arts as well. Furniture, sculpture, clothing, jewelry and graphic design were all influenced by the Art Deco style.
Common themes
So what distinguishes this style from all of the rest? Basically it was a "modernization" of many artistic styles and themes from the past. You can easily detect in many examples of Art Deco the influence of Far and Middle Eastern design, Greek and Roman themes, and even Egyptian and Mayan influence. Modern elements included echoing machine and automobile patterns and shapes such as stylized gears and wheels, or natural elements such as sunbursts and flowers.

Landscape architecture developed out of garden design. This is widely agreed (see for example Kenneth Helphand's illustrated The History of Landscape Architecture ). The Garden History Reference Encyclopedia CD deals extensively with this aspect of landscape architecture and examines its relationship to garden history and design theory. If purchased through Kagi (by teachers or student groups) we offer the CDs in packs of ten at approximately half the normal price. The other key issue is the emeregence of Landscape Architecture as a separate profession, the formation of the American Society of Landscape Architects and its influence on the worldwide profession and the formation of the International Federation of Landscape Architects and the IFLA Central Region . One must know how the landscape profession developed to be able to answer the question ' What is landscape architecture?

MIPS Architecture History
The MIPS architecture grew out of research started at Stanford University. Along with the Berkeley RISC projects, the Stanford MIPS project was one of the first publicly known implementations of a Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) architecture. Among all the current RISC architectures, MIPS remains as one of the simplest. This simplicity makes the MIPS architecture a favorite choice among universities and colleges for their introduction to computer architecture classes. This simplicity also makes the MIPS architecture very attractive to the embedded microprocessor market as it enables very cost-effective implementations. Former employees from Intel, IBM, Motorola and Stanford started a company called MIPS Computer Systems in 1984 to design industrial strength microprocessors based on the Stanford research. The resulting architecture and implementations are somewhat different from the original Stanford work. The R2000 was introduced in 1986 and was one of the earliest commercially available RISC microprocessors. The company had a unique business model of licensing the designs to different semiconductor manufacturers. This business model allowed for an open market for MIPS microprocessors where multiple vendors could sell code-compatible and plug-compatible components. Those vendors, at the time, included NEC, Toshiba, Philips, LSI, IDT, NKK and QED.

The group is most concerned with the creative process itself, both in understanding the meaning of the architect's and artist's actions and, more importantly, in being able to contribute directly to analytical and design processes, including work in architectural design studios. The history of architecture offerings deal with the social and physical context of the built environment on many scales. While not limited to any particular period of time, subjects generally focus on contemporary understanding relevant to the basic premises held by architects. Theory and criticism of architecture serves as the methodological bases for evaluation of the premises, the process, the final product, and the implications (social, formal, and other) of proposed action and nonaction. These offerings consider the development of and changes in significant attitudes about architectural works.

MA Architecture: History and Theory
One year full-time or two years part-time The course deals, at an advanced level, with the history and theory of architecture, and emphasises the key ideas which have served to create architecture. Thus architectural thought, with a particular emphasis on twentieth century and current work, is its main area of enquiry. There has been an enormous increase in recent decades in the number of books published within the architectural field: the course aims to develop a framework in which to understand and interpret the most interesting and important of these. In the process, I lost the post. This has happened before, so I should learn. Apparently one can't leave the page when preparing a response to check another page, assuming the the typing will remain on return. So to make it short: the central issue was fear that the Communism revolution was contagious and might spread elsewhere in Europe. This led to acceptance of Facism in Germany, Italy, and Spain. This conservative reaction regarded all change and "progress" with suspicion. In architecture, Russian Constructivism was identified with the Communist revolution. Modernist manifestos generally professed to be revolutionary. Modernism is was really no longer new in Europe by the 'thirties. A generation earlier, in the first decade of the century, Wagner, Loos, and Hoffman had built modern buildings in Austria. In Berlin, Behrens had built his great A.E.G. Turbine Factory in 1908. Diminishment of novelty contributed to the waning of the modernist implulse. Probably reactionary conservatism was more responsible, however. In Paris, the 1937 Museum of Modern (!) Art was built in a neoclassical style as World War II was breaking out. The mood of Europe at the time was hardly optimistic about a Brave New World, or inclined to celebrate modernity.
