3D City: Studies in Density
Recent Work by MVRDV
(Winy Maas, Vincent de Rijk, Nathalie de Vries)
November 4 - December 12, 2002 Taubman College Gallery, room 2106 Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning Ann Arbor, MI This multimedia exhibition is comprised of research projects and competition designs as well as individual projects featuring the films MetaCity/Datatown (1999), Pig City (2001), and KM3 (1999) along with the projects Nuage d'Art (2001), the Dutch Pavilion (2000), and Brabant Library (2000). 3D City: Studies in Density Is it possible to escape from two-dimensional zoning practices and conventions that dominate current urban regulation? Can three-dimensional zoning create cities that may absorb more program and therefore increase density possibilities? Will such zoning lead to enlarged global urban and human capacity? Would it be possible to generate true densification and to expand existing space? Most importantly, will densification result in richer cities? MVRDV's Studies in Density implies a city that is not only in front, behind or next to you, but also above and below. In short a city in which ground level zero no longer exists but has dissolved into a multiple and simultaneous presence of levels where the town square is replaced by a void or a bundle of connections; where the street is replaced by simultaneous distribution and divisions of routes and is expanded by elevators, ramps and escalators where far away is reduced to proximity; and the park is transformed into a stacking of public spaces. In this dense three-dimensional world, spatial quality is no longer translated into morphology or geometry, but in richness, diversity, presence, and proximity. The difference between under or above ground is no longer relevant. There is only simultaneity.

HOME (Deadline for submissions)
29 Mar 2004 This is an open call to all AAI members for what you think a HOME is or should be. Members of the public have been asked to submit their ideas as well. HOME will be a joint exhibition to begin in late March to compare what members of the public and what architects think a HOME should be. The idea is to encourage the public to be more involved in the debate on architecture. Together with the exhibition there will be an open discussion to initiate the debate amongst a greater audience. The HOME is central to everyday life and the aim is to provide examples of what is possible to do with a HOME. Projects can be real or theoretical, extensions or new builds, apartments, basically anything to do with a HOME. In conjunction with the annual lecture series speakers will be asked to submit a HOME of their choosing which will be exhibited at that time. The theme of HOME will run throughout the AAI programme up until June 2005. Entries are to submit what they think a HOME is or should be by Monday 29th of March 2004 no later than 12.00pm to "HOME", AAI, 8 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. A curator will select works from all submissions which will be displayed together in one space.
  • The material is not limited to a specific format (e.g., a drawing, photograph, model, an object, etc…). All paper submissions are limited to a maximum size of A2 (420mm x 594mm).

Beyond Authorship
