Oil, Water and an Architecture of War

Tony Fry
We are living in strange unsustaining times. Overshadowed by the opening days of the second Iraq war, world water day (March 22) came and went almost totally unnoticed. Considered together these two so different events draw our thoughts towards relations between oil, water, conflict and sustainment. While the Iraq war is not purely about oil, it is certainly in the mix. Visually oil figures in constituting one of the war's icon forms. The smoke from burning oil wells and trenches re-evoke first Iraq war images of Kuwait's burning oilfields so powerfully filmed by Werner Herzog. Likewise, the vastness of the gas guzzling military machine, and the accompanying vulnerability that come with its dependence on fuel supply (reminding us the downfall of Rommel's Africa Corp in WW2), also conjures up very graphic pictures. John Akehurst, who heads Woodside Petroleum, is reported as saying ('Petroleum boss warns of oil crisis'

contents: Last Update: 28 October 2001 We've designed a nice walk around Suzdal, that'll let you see all the main sights, and get the first impression of the town. In around 8 hours you can cover the main churches, monasteries, convents, sights, as well as simply interesting places, and the places for the best view of Suzdal.
INSIDE THE KREMLIN.
The Kremlin is historically the core of Suzdal, that's where the town has started. At the beginning the Kremlin was surrounded by dams made of ground, on which there were wooden walls with towers, and next to the dams there were trenches filled with water, to protect the town. Now there are only some dams and trenches left (no wooden walls anymore), that don't look so intimidating as they were 800 year ago, but provide a very good position to have a view on the town.
