Architecture (cont.)
The new chapter which was opened in the Islamic period led to the creation of remarkable religious buildings. Iranian arts such as calligraphy, stucco, mirror work, and mosaic work, became closely tied together in this new era. Islamic architecture and building decoration are among the most beautiful means of expression. Decoration does not play such an important role in any other type of architecture. The archaeological excavations have provided sufficient documents in support of the impacts of Sasanian architecture on the architecture of Islamic period. According to a classification suggested by Zaki Mohammad Hossain, the fourth period of Iranian architecture (from 15 through 17 Centuries) is the most brilliant period. Various structures such as mosques, mausoleums, bazaars, bridges, and different palaces have mainly survived from this period. In the old Iranian architecture, semi-circular and oval-shaped vaults appeared and Iranians showed their extraordinary skill in making massive domes. Domes can be seen mainly in the structure of bazaars and mosques, and particularly in the historic buildings of Isfahan. Iranian domes are distinguished for their height, proportion of elements, beauty of form, and roundness of the dome stem. The outer surfaces of the domes are mostly mosaic faced, and create a magical view. According to Dr. D. Huff, a German archaeologist, the dome, similar to Iran itself, is the dominant element in Persian architecture. This statement, applies fully to Iranian architecture; because when one looks at lrano-lslamic buildings, huge halls and massive domes are the first elements which immediately attract one's attention. The art of tile work used to decorate all sorts of ivans, domes, and portals, is so interesting that each part of it seems, to be a magnificent piece of painting.

Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering Staffs Department Page
The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering was formed in 1996 from the union of the former Departments of Architecture and Civil Engineering and part of the Department of Materials. The aim of the reorganized department is to educate and conduct research in fields related to construction, the environment, and disaster prevention ranging from the scale of individual buildings to the global society. Major topics covered include:
  • Design and construction of comfortable and esthetically pleasing buildings and attractive urban areas,
  • Design, construction, and management of safe and efficient public infrastructure such as roads, bridges, harbors, and airports, and
  • Utilization and preservation of water and soil in urban environments in harmony with natural ecosystems in a manner resistant to disasters.
  • The number of students entering the department annually is fixed at 160 and there are more than 60 teaching faculty and staff. All faculty in the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering belong to one of six chairs. Fourth year (senior level) students are also assigned to one of these chairs wherein they study current topics of interest for their graduate thesis. These chairs are described below.
  • Geoengineering Chair
Research is conducted on the engineering aspect of investigation, planning, design and construction for highly effective utilization and conservation above and below the ground, and for countermeasures against geological disasters resulting from failures of slope and soft ground.

If not, the melt water will refreeze and form ice dams and icicles. Icedams cause a concentrated unbalanced loading condition at eaves.
    http://www.ima-arch.com/services/article_roof/roofdesign_p6.html
Cold sloping roofs (i.e. sloping roofs where a great deal of natural ventilation is provided at the attic or rafter space) work well to mitigate ice dam formation. (Figure 5) With a properly designed cold roof, the large outside air ventilation air flow below the roof surface washes away the building heat loss migrating into the cold roof cavity. When this "washing away" effect is substantial, little or no interior heat warms the underside of the roof, and therefore the sloping roof snow cover is not melted by building heat. No melt water, no ice dam/icicle formation. A cold sloping roof and its ice dam mitigation performance will be discussed in section VI.
VI. ANALYSIS OF A COLD ROOF DURING THE WINTER OF 1998/1999 This test building is at Sugar Bowl, Norden, CA (near Donner Summit) in the Northern Sierra Mountains. http://www.ima-arch.com/services/article_roof/roofdesign_p4.html
At the roof edges, the wind can gradually cantilever the snow beyond the roof edge support, causing a snow cornice. Snow cornices can grow quite large and can impose a high eccentric load on parapets and cantilevered roof structures. These cornices may pose a danger to anyone or anything that may be on the ground below when they break loose and fall. Sidewall projections, such as cantilevered surface mounted light fixtures, are highly susceptible to snow cornice damage. In summary, low slope (flat) roofs in snow country can have distinct advantages over steep sloped roofs. The snow is retained on the roof and (with the exception of snow cornices), does not fall to the ground. Ice dams are minimized and snow cornices can be relatively easily removed (as compared to eave ice dams) as the cornices are snow and not ice. Wind stripping can keep the roof snow depth to manageable levels, especially if favorable building to wind orientation is utilized in site planning. Melt water can be internally drained.

Architecture Program Aims To Make Buildings More Resistant To Terrorism And Catastrophes
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. When disaster strikes, people evacuate. That's because the structures that normally protect us buildings, bridges, dams, and tunnels are often the most dangerous places to be during catastrophes like hurricanes, earthquakes, industrial accidents, or terrorist attacks. Rudy Matalucci, a civil engineer at the U.S. Department of Energy's Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M., wants people to feel compelled to run into buildings rather than out of them during emergencies. Matalucci leads a group of researchers working with government agencies, professional associations, and universities to use technology to examine the vulnerabilities of structures and identify changes in architectural designs, building codes, and construction standards so future structures might better withstand the kinds of insults that we worry about but don't plan for. Sandia has for decades applied advanced technology and sound security principles to the exacting task of making U.S. nuclear weapons as safe, secure, and reliable as possible, an expertise Labs officials call "surety." Sandia now wants many of the surety lessons learned during the Cold War how to make a building that protects nuclear materials resistant to a bomb blast or secure against a would-be saboteur, for instance to be applied to the challenge of making public buildings, homes, and other structures safer. Sandia calls the program its Architectural SuretySM initiative.

There does not remain a lot of of the oldest cities and dwellings and most often only their monuments, patiently rectified and restored testify about them, if the stone was used. The majority of the structures are ignored here bus hibiscustour reports and underlines primarily the least known aspects more surprising or of the works wellings were built with materials much less resistant (wood, plants, raw bricks). One observes sometimes sketches on the ground and some clue (fire place, backyard, storage..). Troy (Turkey) is hidden under 6 or 7 layers of cities built during centuries, and the huts of Gallic are only reconstituted. Egyptian villages let only imagine what they could be, although in this country, dry sand authorised a very exceptional conservation. It should be said that all it is wooden made has generally disappeared, well before fabrics and leather. Finally, earthquakes destroyed a lot too, as for the greek monuments

Book Description Customer Reviews I spotted this book in a bookstore, but ordered it online. For anyone interested in American economic history in terms of how our nation evolved via manufacturing and early technology, this book is incredibly interesting. Its coffee table size makes it a bit cumbersome to read continuously. Nonetheless its text is well written. The real winners here, however, are the wonderful black and white photos of railroad terminals, factory exteriors/machinery, dams, power plants, and allied structures that really capture the collaborative genius that designed and built American industry. The combined effect of "Industry, Architecture and Engineering" is almost narcotic. I keep going back to look at the photos and marvel at them. That's a far cry from any other large book I've ever seen. It is a brilliantly conceived and produced work.
