Places of Power: The Aesthetics of Technology

I am neither an employee of Ventana Publication, nor am I paid to write good words about this book. I have always been a fan of John Sexton's work. Who else alive can match his fantastic printmaking skills. I will say it with confident; none. John Sexton is the only person I know who comes close to the printmaking standards of Ansel Adams. "Places of Power" is all about beautiful prints. I am not a technology "freak," so I am in no postion to comment in this area. But if you love black-and-w... more...

Architecture
"The meaningful Impact of Persian architecture Is versatile. New overwhelming and dignified, magnificent and impressive, charmingly fairy. like."; A.U. Pope
Persian architecture can be considered through the age-old history of the land. It goes back to the late 6th and early 5th millennia BC Persian architecture has been a comprehensive embodiment of Iranian psychology and characteristics in different historical periods. In studying Persian architecture four distinc, protracted, but continuous periods are distinguished, as follows:
  • Persian prehistoric architecture till the formation of the first national governmet by the Medes. Persian architecture from the Medes period till the end of Sassanians. Islamic period architecture till the end of Safavi period. Contemporary and present-day Persian architecture.
  • In connection with the present review of Persian architecture, the reader is reminded of a varying range of other arts applied by the inhabitants of Iran to decorate their different constructions. In short, such arts are: stone carving, stucco carving and plaster work, painting, tile work, brick work, mirror glasswork, honey comb work, mosaic work, and several other ornamental arts. On the other hand, one has to consider the exceptional multiformity of buildings in terms of design and application. This diversity has arisen as a result of particular requirements and the rich tastes of Iranian artists through different periods of history.

The earliest buildings that were built in Greece , in the New Stone Age , are small houses or huts , and wooden walls around them for protection. Later there are bigger houses, and stone walls around the villages. By the Early Bronze Age , we find one bigger house in the middle of the village, and fancier, bigger stone walls. In the Late Bronze Age , under the influence of Western Asia , and the Minoans on Crete, there are palaces and big stone tombs , as well as paved roads and bridges, and dams (and more stone walls). During the Greek Dark Ages the palaces were burned, and the roads and bridges and dams mostly fell apart. But at the end of the Dark Ages, with the beginning of the Iron Age and the Archaic period in Greece, we see a new type of building: the

    Influences of the Greek Architecture
Parthenon The parthenon is the largest building on top of the Acropolis. It was a temple that was dedicated to Athena Parthenos. It is made of white pentelic marble and surrounded by free-standing columns. It was designed by Ictinus and Callicrates. Panels on the wall show scenes of the Battle of the Lapiths and the Centaurs. The Parthenon was used as a Byzantine Church, Roman Catholic Church, a Turkish Harem, and a Turkish powder magazine. On September 16, 1687, a direct hit caused the powder in the Parthenon to explode. Scattering debris across the Acropolis. After that the temple began to disappear. In 1922 a Greek archaeologist Nicolas Balanos restored a number of columns and parts. Details of Parthenon History of parthenon Prehistoric Homes and Times The first homes were made of woven wattles, daubed with mod. The huts had a beehive shape. They were very hard to enlarge because of this shape. The people of Greece actually started on an island just south of Greece: Crete. They were known as the minoan civilization later, they were attacked by the hitlities, and they were forced to move to the mountainous region of Greece. There, they continued to work, and they built up a wonderful country with magnificent buildings.
