November 28, 2001 Addressing the Needs of Society
Faculty taking part in the discussion were asked to identify pressing issues that could be addressed by marshaling the intellectual and creative resources of the school. Prominent among the concerns they raised were the increasing disparity between rich and poor, continued degradation of the environment, and the growing homogenization of the world. The places where we live, work, and conduct business are becoming more and more alike and more and more unlikable. People are put off by their environment and feel powerless to change it, the Envision participants observed. The rise of heritage tourism is a sign that we are desperate to find places of enduring value. Other specific issues that surfaced in the Envision discussion include the following: Sprawl and its effect on our quality of life The need to preserve and steward historic and cultural resources Imbalance in modes of transportation (i.e., over-dependence on automobiles) and its effect on the environment

Yemen Arabs, name originally applied to the Semitic peoples of the Arabian peninsula; now used also for populations of countries whose primary language is Arabic, e.g., Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, and Yemen. Socially, Arabs are divided into the settled fellahin (villagers) and the nomadic Bedouin. The invasions of Muslims from Arabia in the 6th and 7th cent. diffused the Arabic language and Islam, the Arabic religion. At its peak the Arab empire extended from the Atlantic Ocean across North Africa and the Middle East to central Asia. A great Arab civilization emerged in which education, literature, philosophy, medicine, mathematics, and science were highly developed. In Europe the Arab conquests were particularly important in Sicily, from the 9th to late 11th cent., and in Spain, in the civilization of the Moors. In the 20th cent., Arab leaders have attempted to unite the Arab-speaking world into an Arab nation. Since 1945 most Arab countries have joined the Arab League. In 1982, member nations had a total population estimated at 43 million. Several of these countries control two thirds of the world's oil reserves and are members of OPEC. Since 1948 disputes with the state of Israel have resulted in Arab-Israeli Wars.

http://www.thaimyway.com/article/Europe/Europe.htm
In 1997, Thailand's major institutions commemorated the Centenary of King Chulalongkorn's First Visit to Europe in 1897. This visit was a momentous occasion and an important event in Thai history because it was the first European trip by any Thai monarch. Historians also refer to this visit as a diplomatic and political coup, settling once and for all, Siam's sovereignty as a free nation in Southeast Asia. Only four years before that, the King had to pay heavy pernalty for threatening the threatening behaviour of a French gun boat laying within her sovereign territory. A conference on the Centenary was organised by Chulalongkorn University in collaboration with the European Community in Bangkok. I was invited to present a paper on the European cultural influence on the Thai culture as a direct and indirect result of this visit. The following article is the original text as presented at the conference. The topics covered are: 1. The early European presence in Siam
2. The stand-off situation
3. Siamese imagery of the European culture

ARCHITECTURE
The Building of Blandville and the postcultural Ego-Cult
When approaching the subject of national identity, the dynamics which threaten it and the efforts made in some quarters to protect its inherent individuality and legitimacy, few commentators, if any, ever address the issue of architectural design and how the built environment engages with our sense of ourselves to a more revealing degree than might at first be expected. At a very prosaic level, the way our private and public edifices are built says almost as much about the state of our nation culturally as do the more immediately recognisable features such as, among others, language, music, literature, dance or vestimentary forms. Architecture in modern Scotland speaks volumes on how we express ourselves as a nation and by and large what our most recent history tells us is that, a few laudable exceptions notwithstanding, the on-going process of “renewal” at work in the buildings around us pays little heed to our indigenous heritage and to our continued existence as an identifiable cultural community. The obsession with "Futurism", the creed of absolute devotion to postulated technological invincibility, the religion of limitless technological progress, the blind, some would say, masturbatory adherence to the latest technological advancement, all of these universalist delusions lessen our distinctiveness as an identifiable national cultural community. The architecture they sponsor and increasingly deliver is a frighteningly cold and sinister universality of geometric and technolatrous posturing. Who cares that it is now structurally possible to create “living spaces” (whatever happened to "homes"?) fifty levels high? So what if we have the technology to build octagonal offices with spiral elevators? So what if the building techniques of the day enable us to live and work in revolving glass domes equipped with interior heli-pads and hydroponic oxygen lounges? Just because something is technically feasible, does not make it desirable.
